Would You Pay $100K? (GWM Tank 700 2024 Review)

  • Detailed walkaround review and brief first drive of the GWM Tank 700, a new premium 4WD model that would sit above the Tank 500 in price.
The Tank 700 is a boxy four-wheel drive from Great Wall (GWM) that is pitched as the company's most premium Tank-series offering. In China it costs an eye-watering $150,000 (AUD), which would seem a little high for Australian positioning.
Rivals to the Tank 700 could include the Land Rover Defender, Toyota Prado, Ineos Grenadier and Ford Everest. We check it out for the first time over in China.

I like where GWM are heading with these models. I'm old enough to remember the "new" Japanese threat back in the early 1980s, then we saw Hyundai's in the early 2000s start to take off. Chinese car makers will get their eventually - perhaps GWM is taking a leaf out of their book to a certain point. I drive an LDV D90 diesel now, take it off-road regularly, and really love it. My lease expires next year and I'd consider the T-500 (or 700) as an option. But if GWM get their pricing right on T700 - on par with the new Y63 Patrol that comes out (@$95-100k for base model), but still well below the LC300 - then it would sell quite well....and gradually increase sales as their reputation continues to improve, just as the MG ZS has done over the past 2yrs to now be among the top10 models. For GWM, they have to get the engine choice right for Australia, along with the payload and tow capacity - which is where the 300 and 500 are at a bit of a disadvantage for now.

GWM are saying it would come in at under 100k in Australia. This includes air suspension, magnetic shocks and just about every luxury feature known to man. The 150k was some Chinese only first release special designed for rich Chinese businessmen. No doubt much bling but little practicality or taste.

When this “Tank” breaks down in Warumungu in remote outback of Northern Territory. No spare parts available from Syd, Mel, Brisbane. It will cost more than $5k to have the vehicle towed to say Darwin. And wait 3 months for the parts to arrive. Good luck

@@yslee1401 Exactly. Just like when the head failed on the 79 series Ute (v8) I was using on the Nullarbor for work. Couldn’t be fixed so on Truck to Ceduna and 3 months later fixed, or my nephews Landcruiser that has some sort of electrical fault and spent a month in western VIC in 2023 in a small town waiting for the trigger module that wasn’t available anywhere and guess what, broke down again 2 weeks ago coming to visit me and we towed it to a repairer and it’s now in SA in a town waiting to see if the problem can be identified. But Australia is a big place, no one has to go Warumungu if they don’t want to and despite the billions Toyota spend on advertising to the contrary, they do break down even in Warumungu and if serious enough it will get shipped to Darwin and wait there for parts. Ps the world is flat and the US did send people to the moon.

A high spec landcruiser300 has a payload of 650kg (before bullbar or lights & roof rack). A3500kg van will have at least 10% towbar weight (350kg)....absolute minimum. Subtract 350kg from 650kg gives you 300kg for people - that's two adults and bags. Every landcruiser that I have seen with 4 people, bull bar etc towing huge vans will be 100% overweight. Insurance companies & police are cracking down on this.

@@Ozgrade3 Firstly, my initial comment was about the vehicle mentioned. Secondly, I do understand your point as being an ex Toyota development engineer I do understand what you’re now saying, Thirdly, as an executive board member of a heavy vehicle governing body I agree with you that people are dangerously overloading the said vehicles total gross mass they are can use. My van is under 3,000 kilograms for this very reason 300 kilograms for two adults and bags is somewhat extreme, though point well made. However, take the new Patrol as an example with a total combined weight of 7,000 kilograms. Meaning it has 785 kilograms to spare. This will easily accommodate 4 occupants, their luggage and also the weight of other options. Unless each occupant and bags weighs 200 kilograms which is highly unlikely. In another point you’ve made (if you’re from Australia) I’d these RAMS should be banned purely from a design brief as in America the statistics for pedestrian frontal fatalities has increased due to the high frontal area, which takes out any possibility for pedestrians to go over this.

For giggles we went up to the local weigh station. now he had bull bars roof racks, bigger wheels, everything you could fit on or in the car, AND 4 big people. he was over weight in every category acording to the placrad in the doot jam, he didn't care though (and I;m talking 500+kg overweight). 6 months later he had a huge accident and the insurance company denied his claim.. Two main reasons why people would pay $150k for a Landcruiser & Petrol but not Tank. 1st, they have tried and tested in Australia for many years and they are mostly, yes i said mostly reliable. 2nd, brand perceived value and heritage, which Tank can't match. Many people have been buying cars that are made in China which are close to $150k in Australia, just not with the Tank badge, think Volvo & Lotus as an example.
