    While Sid Eudy’s “Sid Justice”, “Sid Vicious” and “Sycho Sid” characters were truly unforgettable, some may forget how popular and “over” Sid was during late 1996 and early 1997 during his WWF title runs. When Sid was brought back as a stand-in for the recently released Ultimate Warrior, no one could’ve predicted how popular Sid would become… eventually leading to Sid ending the 1996 title reign of Shawn Michaels to much fanfare. While Sid didn’t necessarily perform as a wrestling good-guy, he still got incredible crowd reactions; a real sign of the times as the whole landscape of professional wrestling was going through changes.
    Sid came back for the WWF’s 9th In Your House show, teaming up with Shawn Michaels and Ahmed Johnson to do battle with Camp Cornette. Within months, Sid became the number 1 contender for the WWF Championship, and Sid would defeat Michaels at the 1996 Survivor Series to become the new champion. Survivor Series took place inside Madison Square Garden, and the New York WWF audience was known for letting superstars know exactly what they think of them. Sid was cheered during the match while HBK was booed out of the building, something the WWF were not expecting.
    Sid would go on to headline pay per views against the likes of Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker while still maintaining his popularity. In 1997, Sid would come and go from the WWF, and by the end of the year, one of the WWF’s most unexpected popular superstars was nowhere to be seen. This video looks at Sid’s title runs during 1996 and 1997; when Sycho Sid was the master and ruler of the world.

      Yes and it was actually Jim Cornette who told Vince McMahon that "that dudes a psycho" after what Sid did to Arn Anderson in 1993. Vince liked the angle and went with it, thus name Sycho Sid was born. Hence the entrance music being a version of the 1960 movie psycho, also Sid repeatedly stabbing Arn with a scissors in a hotel room is certainly relatable to the shower scene in Psycho.

    Shawn's backstage politicking was probably at its worst during his WWF title reign. While at the time I was gutted Shawn lost the title to Sid, watching it now with better knowledge of what was going on behind the scenes makes it a satisfying end to his reign in my opinion. Even though I was 14 at the time, I still thought Sid was scary as hell.

    • @WolfWinter
      @WolfWinter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Backstage politics weren't the only reason Vader lost that title opportunity. He was notoriously stiff in the ring and people hated working with him. By people I mean the entire locker room. Sure, it was Shawn Michaels complaining about him that did it in, but it was more a straw breaking the camels back type situation. Vader would not have made a very good champion.

      @@WolfWinter I agree to an extent. Vader's style wouldn't have worked in WWF at the time. At least in WCW, he had Sting, Dustin Rhodes, Flair, British Bulldog, Cactus Jack, men who could kind of reel Vader in and remind him he's not in Japan, he doesn't have to be as stiff. HBK, not being used to being served a plate of potatoes from Vader just went to Vince and it was done.

    • @WolfWinter
      @WolfWinter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ThatRetroGeek86 If it wasn't HBK it would have been someone else. Especially since people were complaining about him before Summerslam, but not, (I suspect) to Vince. I think that was made the difference.
      HBK, after all, was hardly alone in the 1996 WWF roster for being unused to the stiff Japanese style.
      People hold Vader up as a victim of HBK's locker room scheming, and that completely ignores that WWF was a completely different environment from WCW and Japan, where, as you say, Vader's style meshed much better with the rest of the locker room.

    Sid was a great "tweener", he even got a fantastic reception from the WM 8 crowd despite being the heel vs Hogan four years earlier in 1992. WWF just didn't want to listen to the fans reactions and that has always been an issue for them. That period with Hart, Austin, Sid and Undertaker screwing each other over for the title was brilliant. It was unpredictable yet believable, made all four seem equally matched and competitive so you never knew who was going to come out on top. It laid the foundations for the attitude era to come. The added bonus was that the drama centered around and added value to the pursuit of the title itself rather than somebody's wife having an affair, a wrestler's monster truck being destroyed or any McMahon family drama. Great video btw as Sid deserves far more credit than he gets.
