Doctor Who I don’t know?!? That was a great episode. For some reason the Hand of Fear was another scary one, to me at least, from the 14th series. RIP Elizabeth Sladen.
This is my favorite. The way the starfield builds up to form Tom's face, and then in the closing credits, deforms, is genius - even though it's just being played in reverse lol. The music (of course), and the general 80s warm colourful glow just make it stand out as the best!
The Howell theme, probably my favorite rendition of the theme tune. These titles and the theme are more strongly associated with the Davison era, as he used these throughout the entirety of his reign, and Baker only for season 18. Peter Howell, like Derbyshire, Gold, Keff, and most of the people to have taken up the role of the Doctor's musician, was very brilliant at what he did. There's a video on TH-cam that shows him giving a lecture on how he built this rendition of the theme.. very interesting for anyone curious. I love the opening cry (ssskrrreewww) and the synth and the rising chords at the end that you hear if you listen to the full theme. MarineDalek did a great recreation of it called "Howell's Odyssey." All in all a fun theme that really brought the Doctor into the 80s..
Interesting. The Howell theme remains my least favorite rendition used in the classic series. It would be my least favorite of them all if it wasn't for the Scream of the Shalka theme.
Definitely! Howell did an amazing job on his arrangement, even Delia was pleased! I personally love this version, but it's not better than the Original Derbyshire Masters. Dominic Glynn's version is also a favorite of mine, he done a fantastic job in the very limited time he had to do it. Which was 1 week!! Keff's theme ..... lets not go there. (Still a good arrangement but not as good). I'll probably be hated for this next bit, but I absolutely admire and love the Delaware Theme. On my channel, it's used in my most recent mixes. Shame the RWS never made a master tape for it. Murray Gold's Themes - the only best version there is .... 2005 - 2006. You can fight me all day, but you have to admit, that's his best version. The later ones just didn't cut it for me. Segun Akinola Themes - Fantastic cool new versions of the theme using the 1963 master tape, however, the bassline is pretty trashy. Murray gold esque a bit. There are several non official arrangements that are fantastic, but i will be here for eternity talking about each one. So i'll cut it here.
This is definitely the best intro. Every time I listen to a different intro I find myself just a tiny bit frustrated that it doesn't follow the same minute patterns as this one, which is unique in a few ways that I find incredibly nice. And that vintage Moog synth sound is just so warm and pleasant.

Nothing is more evocative of absolute, abject terror than the sound of Doc 4's theme coming on the TV when I was seven years old when my mom would watch Dr. Who on WGBH out of Boston in the early '80s. Seeing Tom Baker's floating head on the screen and hearing that viscerally horrific music would set me to running and hiding instantly... but I would always come back to sneak a peek to see a Dalek or two! When I got older, my favorite version of the song would be Pink Floyd's, naught but a short tease of it in a live performance of their song One of These Days, but that scorching bassline always makes me explode in goosebumps
i was 8 as well when this one took over 😊 and got the 7 inch single of the theme with tom baker on the sleeve, played it so much over the years it wore out, now got a good 2nd hand copy!

It wasn’t Tom Baker who wrecked the show in the 80s, it was JNT And that swine Michael Grade/The BBC slashing the budget. I watched the E Space trilogy recently and honestly, Tom was the most entertaining thing them.

I'm planning on doing a classic doctor who marathon from the start. The memories ! When i was a kid in the 80s,Doctor Who came on after my children's programs, and i remember rushing to change the channel quickly so i wouldnt catch any if this theme song, lol! It freaked me out intensely!

This knocked my socks off when I first saw this opening replace the one they had stuck with throughout the last half of the 1970s. The music, and the creepy lighting on Tom Baker's face made this extra scary and atmospheric. Ah, the nostalgia feels.

I liked when they brought back the faces in the intro and updated the concept. I was disappointed when they didn't keep it for the 13th Doctor.
