- Today we're doing some experimental interplanting of flowers with our sunflower cover crop. We're planting a flower called Lacy Phacelia that works great for a cover crop to heal and repair soils.

I’ve used phacelia for years and green manure crops. They build soil fertility and tilth . Companion planting is beneficial also using pots. Bringing in pollinators and beneficial insects as well as feeding birds. Plant communities are important and people are starting to plant hedgerows here in California with native plants. Good stewardship of the land is a admiral thing to pass on to others. Thank you for your video.
We have Phacelia growing wild in Uvalde county Texas. It’s beautiful stuff and I’m glad to know now how beneficial it is!

If you time this planting right you can terminate the lacy phacelia and then go in and harvest the sunflowers.

I heard from another You Tuber that the ads do not pay anything when the ads are skipped. Is this true? If so, i am willing to watch the ads in full to support your channel. Keep up the good work. Rookies like me learn so much from you guys. Please know that you are appreciated.
We don't have much control over the placement of ads. I think you are correct in your assumption though.
According to what I was able to find, Phacelias are not nitrogen fixers, but are considered "nitrogen holders", scavenging soil nitrogen and preventing nitrogen leaching and denitrification that would take place if the nitrates were simply left in the ground.
Correct. They are not “fixers,” but scavengers. Much like Buckwhear scavenges phosphorous and Daikons scavenge nutrients from deep.
I didn’t plant as a cover crop, but I did plant some in one of my grow bags, just to see what they’d do. They’re about 3 or 4 inches tall, now. The flower looked pretty on the package, so kind of excited to see how they do.

I read a study out of Kansas wheat country where multi species cover crops were shown to be superior to monoculture. Cover photo showed phacelia, sunflowers, crimson clover, and turnips that I could distinguish. I think they terminated with roundup and crimp then drill the wheat like you mentioned before. I’ve seen lots of corn grown that way. I don’t see why growing the multi species cover crop and termination by flail mower followed by two weeks or so of tarping wouldn’t be better in our context.
Multi-species is always a good idea. We hope to be doing more of it in the future.
Do all that work and then ruin it with Round-Up. Damn shame. Know a handful of farmers here in Ohio who died of pancreatic cancer, and they used that product. Maybe it affects people differently, I'm certainly not going to take that chance. Luckily got my landlady to stop using it on her corn fields, no difference in yields, but the wildflower, bee and butterfly population has slowly come back around the field. Saw a Bald Eagle the other day, and we both nearly cried, watching it build its huge nest in a sycamore. I digress, hope you have a wonderful spring, happy growing!!

No Critters down there. You need a electric fence to grow anything where i live (MD).
We've got cats, dogs and shotguns to keep the critters at bay.
in Appalachia it's common to use "mole vibrators" to keep out moles, voles, and to a degree other rodents. It's a stake you place every so far that lets loose sporadic vibrations at irregular intervals tricking the moles into thinking an area is occupied. I've seen firsthand their efficacy as a preventative measure and to evict existent populations. However, there is no substitute for cats.

I know this is off the subject but I need some help !! L have a ton of leaf footed stink bugs on my tomatoes, can't seem to control them. Can you give me some help on this matter? thanks love the videos.
If you have a ton of adults, not much you can do at this point. Best to pull the plants instead of giving them more breeding grounds. Make sure you don't plant any nightshade in that spot for a couple years. And next year start a spraying program early, as soon as you transplant the tomatoes.
Do you plant 1 row each kind or do you mix them up? That would make a pretty bouquet as they grow.
We have planted individual colors in the past, but most times we just plant the color mixes.

Do you have a problem with the sunflower seeds sprouting up when you cut them under ?
Not really. You may see some sprouting on the next planting, but the first light cultivation usually takes care of that.
I’m in zone 10a and I’m growing three crops a year with no fallow period at all. After 10 years I can tell the soil is starting to wear out. Prior to each crop I till in homemade compost, bagged chicken manure and a mix of peat moss and perlite. Should I give the soil a break for a season and plant a Nitrogen-fixing cover crop? What’s a good one that doesn’t need a lot of water and will be easy to mow and till in?
Definitely should add some cover crops into the mix. Which one you grow will depend on the season in which you grow it. Sunn Hemp is a great nitrogen-fixing cover crop that loves the warmer temps.

You have a lot longer growing season than I do if these only have about two weeks after maturity before the frost will it be beneficial?
Oh yeah. And I didn’t mention it on the video, but this flower is pretty frost-tolerant as well.

Travis, I have a raised bed in partial shade that I plant my brassicas in. It is fixing to be empty. It is to hot to plant greens as a cover crop, right? Or should I just tarp it for a month, until it is time to plant some brassicas? Thank you for all of your help. middle GA. zone 8a
Too hot to plant greens or brassicas now. You can do a short-term cover crop like Buckwheat or this Lacy Phacelia though.
I do beans or purple hull peas. They’re a little slower in partial shade, but they still do fine. They add nitrogen if you turn the plants under. You will still have some stalks but they’re easy to pull out. I’m planting them now!

My okra has lower leaves that are yellow with tiny black spots all over them. Looked it up. Can't find anything. Any ideas?
Sounds like a fungus or maybe the plant is just dropping those bottom leaves which can happen as they grow.

Not yet, the 18 degree weather got us.
Question for you about the flowers of this particular cover crop. Is there any information in the research concerning what type of activity you see with honey bees and this flower? We are trying to make the most of our flowers we plant for purposes other than the bees but still get that as a benefit as well so we maximize what we plant.
It is known as one of the top flowers to grow for honey bees. Highly recommended in the pollinator community.

@@gardeningwithhoss I planted these in a bare test plot of ground and they got rained on a few hours later on Sunday evening. They have already sprouted and are on their way to making a bunch of flowers. Thanks for the video and information on them. They will really help fill a flower need for our bees this fall and more so next year . Keep up the good work.
After I incorporate the Lacy Phacelia in the garden soil, how long should I wait before planting that bed?
As soon as the material is broken down to the degree that you can get good seed to soil contact when planting.

Do you plant your rows east to west or north to south?
Both. Haven't found that it matters at all.
Do you guys work with any sun hemp for soil amendment or cover crops?
Yes, we carry Sunn Hemp (hosstools.com/product/sunn-hemp/) and use it as well. It's a great warm-season cover crop. Just make sure you've got a good way to cut it once it gets full grown because the stems can get a little woody.

Are Phacelia only annual ? Do they come in Perennial ?
The spent flowers will seed throughout the garden and will also grow new plants the next year.

Haha. I use that term a lot to include our family as this is always a “we” effort, even though it’s just me in front of the camera most of the time.
Here in Zone 7b NE Georgia, when do you suggest planting this cover crop? Will it work as an over winter cover crop?
Late spring, summer and fall plantings may all be successful depending upon the location. We normally plant in the fall and over winter. This year the 18 degrees did get it.
