I started getting into running this past year, I joined cross country and I'm not exaggerating when I say that it changed my life and how I view myself. My body image has improved a lot because being able to run three miles all at once and have that be "normal" lifts my self esteem and I've started loving my body for what it can do. I've also gained a lot more energy. Every time I go on a run, I'm so energetic for the rest of the day and it feels so good! I've also discovered that I actually like running, something that I didn't know was possible until I tried it for myself. So yes, distance running and running in general is hard, but it's worth it!

a couple of things for new runners:
-a fast mile time is not indicative of weight - obviously, the more you weigh the more you’re carrying when you run, so you may go slower (think: running with just your clothes on vs running with a stuffed backpack), but there are techniques and running forms that runners learn to run quickly. striving for a shorter mile time is fun, but shouldn’t be your main goal unless you plan on running timed marathons.
    - the “tone” that seems apparent when you start running a lot is most likely due to shedding water weight - mostly through your sweat. your fat cells don’t hold on to the water when you sweat, so they are less “plump”. losing actual fat takes longer than a week.
    - if losing weight is an ultimate goal, know that running burns the most calories. which means that you HAVE to EAT MORE!!! obviously foods with higher water & lower fat content is better (see: many vegetables), but trying to uphold an exercise regiment without giving your body the calories it needs will just ruin everything for you. your muscles burn loads and loads of calories. fat barely burns any. when you don’t take in the calories your body thinks it needs, it’ll try to get rid of the highest calorie burners to save itself - that means your muscles will suffer. when your body is well fed and your muscles are being used, then your body will start to use up your fat reserves for extra energy.

Weight makes a HUGE difference. When I was a skinny 150 pounds at 6' 1.5" I could easily run a 7-minute mile with no training. After lifting weights for several years and bulking up to 240 pounds I struggle to run an 11-minute mile. America's best-ever marathoner Ryan Hall gained 40 pounds of muscle just after retiring and could barely run 1 mile under 6 minutes afterwards.

You only start to burn fat after about 30 minutes of cardio but if you wanna get toned I suggest core workouts. however, cardio does have other benefits for the heart and cells and can help with fat burn:)

@@choosewisely6705 hey! Getting into running isn’t easy but if you start slow it is really really fun as you get the hang of it. I started out on a treadmill and ran at a 5.5 ahout a 10:30 mile. Once I was comfortable I upped the speed and I started to run outside some more as I got more comfortable with my pace. Every so often I would make my pace faster and over the course of a year and a half of running everyday I’m at a 7.8 (7:20)
And that’s still not exactly where I want to be because I have run 6:20s. but it’s good for now. And it really depends because before I was super scrawny. So I’m not sure if your running for muscle, health, etc. but running has really changed my life. It takes time and the journey is very different for everyone but start at a pace your comfortable with and if you need to walk a bit walk a bit. You can also slow the speed because it is a lot sometimes. And starting on a treadmill helps you get used to your pace! Getting a running watch is also helpful but it’s really not necessary.

When I started running it was only because I wanted to be more fit. Now that I have so much resistance I realise how useful it is. I saved myself countless times because I was late for something and had to run. I always get late to anything so having a running boost is always helpful xD. I would actually have failed one of my exams if I couldn't run haha
