The Functional Medicine Approach To Treating COVID-19 And Post-COVID Syndrome

  • COVID has taught us a lot over the last year, and continues to do so every day that we battle this pandemic. We’ve seen what an overburdened medical system looks like and been faced with the reality of social distancing for many months now. Perhaps one of the most important lessons we have learned, though, is that a body that’s already suffering from chronic disease has far greater risks of COVID severity and even death. In the US, where the majority of people are metabolically unhealthy, we’ve seen our population faring much worse than other countries against this virus. Here, there are 500 COVID deaths per million people (at the time of this episode recording). In China, that number is 3 per million. Look at that alongside the 42% obesity rate here and the 2.6% rate there. COVID has shown us just how out of balance we are as a nation and how our baseline of disease has gotten us into such a mess.⁣

I sat down with my colleague, good friend, and former roommate Dr. Patrick Hanaway to talk about the Functional Medicine approach to treating COVID-19. Dr. Patrick Hanaway is a board-certified family physician trained at Washington University. After 10 years as Chief Medical Officer at Genova Diagnostics, Dr. Hanaway became the Chief Medical Education Officer for the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2014, Dr. Hanaway was the founding Medical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. His research focus is on nutrition, the microbiome, and evaluating value in Functional Medicine models of care. Currently his teaching focus is on cancer, COVID, and uncertainty.⁣

Thank you for your work and sharing. My husband Robin Hur, RIP, wrote a book, Food Reform, published in 1975, that discussed the diets and lifestyle of cultures that enjoyed longevity and suffered none of the degenerating diseases so prevalent today. He ate only whole foods - fruits and vegetables - and was a long distance runner. However, Robin suffered dementia in his later life and passed away at 84. I couldn't understand how someone who was so self-disciplined with his diet and exercise could have dementia. But now I realize, for one thing, his diet allowed no fat whatsoever - to the extent he ate no nuts, seeds, or avocados, never mind butter or coconut oil. Also, because he loved mathematics and worked through the night on a math theory, didn't get nearly enough sleep.
I learned so much from Robin but know how important a well-balanced lifestyle is for health and functioning.

Love this video. At 63 and after 4 MI’s and 19 stents i decided robustly to take back my own health care. Invited my PCP on my keto/IF journey (per Dr Davis book “Undoctored “) . Now 28 months later I’m off 17 the Rx meds and doing well. I refuse to be a sheeple geriatric patient and eat properly for my social security income. Fully fat adapted I eat OMAD, 2MAD and actually enjoy fasting.
Really I learned all that I have come to know from dedicated professionals (doctors/body builders) and owe gratitude to you all! My goal is not just life, rather QUALITY of life! Building up the gut biome and mitochondria to “optimum” is my plan of action.

Told my PCP I’m not your usual geriatric that needs to visit every month or 3 months for you to refill, up or add more Rx. But stilling to hear his advice BUT I decide-after researching if I do it or not. It didn’t sit well . Like I said I can move on if necessary.

I eat an ounce of organic, pasteured liver a day as a supplement. If you have a very toxic liver, you might need to clean it up before being able to process the nutrients in the liver.

What does the word doctor mean. Plain and simply it means teacher. Traditional medicine had long lost this concept. The pharmaceutical industry runs our medical schools our hospitals and our health care system. As Dr William Davis states in his book Undoctored, we do not have an American health care system, we have an American wealth care system. It takes money from people who don’t have it and gives it to people who don’t need it or deserve it. I actually had a friend’s doctor tell him after continued questioning about his condition “John I don’t know I’m just a drug pusher.” Modern medicine has become an industry to generate income off treating symptoms not trying to cure disease or trying to teach someone how to be healthy. But how could they, have you ever noticed the number of overweight and obese doctors and nurses. Doctors have one of the lowest lifespans of any professions. Hats off to the functional medical community the only ones who really look at the real cause of disease and actually teach(doctor) their patients to become health to eliminate disease and help prevent future disease and enjoy a high quality long functional life .

Within hours of treatment the pressure I felt on top of my head lifted. Several days later I could think clearer my short term memory lapses improving. My fatigue also is much better. I nap once or twice a week once a day. Not every day twice or three times. Why do doctors ignore treating brain inflammation. It is documented on MRI scans. They know it's there but don't treat it. I thank God I finally found a doctor who treated it. Look for doctors who will give corticosteroids to treat long term covid inflammation. This is what causes long covid!

Did we know at what tissue temperature did SARS COV2 better replicate?
    Why?
Because at TWiV 659 at min29 virologist Christian Drosten suggest that SARS COV2 better replicate at very low tissue temperature.
Theoretically,If thermogenesis work well that can protect against Covid19.
Muscular tonus are decreased If vitD level are very low (one symptom of rykets is muscular hipotonia)
    Hipotiroidism also decrease thermogenesis.

Ok Docs....I am already taking everythin you mentioned as a 77 year old.....except the melatonin...I am reluctant due to the fact that I have no issues with sleeping whatso ever. and do not want to do anything to mess with that. Can you tell me if there is something extra about melatonin that I am missing?

melatonin and vitamin c are billions of years old and both anti oxidants. Melatonin works in ways in the body that is absolutely amazing. watch this video. th-cam.com/video/Roh4lQXneQg/w-d-xo.html

Melatonin lowers the inflammation in the body. You are not taking it for sleep. It is to cut the inflammation from Covid.

Thank you. The part about treating post-Covid syndrome was a bit open ended... Does it really need to be individualized/treated by an integrative medicine Dr or are there general takeaways ROR those recovering from a bad case of Covid?

@@SiegfriedEmme for cancer treatment........I have amazing levels of melatonin...and it is almost always stated that people, on the average do not get the sleep they need.....not true for me......No issues falling asleep....always within minutes.......sleep full 7 - to 8 hours....longer in winter.....I just would not want to mess with it when one realizes I already am on the regimen they discussed above plus.....organic diet...so....my question was to the doctor....concerning covid....not cancer....I am in my late 70s and not dealing with cancer issues.

Hello Doc I caught Covid 4 weeks ago and developed Pneumonia. I went to the ER and was x-rayed but they didn't admit me because my vitals looked good. They prescribed Albuterol and said to take Tylenol and Motrin to treat the fever. I had gotten Monoclonal Antibodies Treatment the night before. 2 weeks later I went to get x-rayed because the plegmn and cough hadn't gone away plus I was getting back pains. The x-ray it looked clear, kidney function looked good. Now fast forward a week I am still having pain/ soreness (not excruciating) on back. The pain is in Different spots which I notice more when I expand my diaphragm plus I still have the mucus productive cough. Do you suppose this virus may have triggered an inflammatory process? Should I check my Inflammatory Markers? Do you suppose I should have been given antibiotics? I am sorry to bother you I am just trying to do everything I can for the best outcome.

With respect. Statistics quoted are very misleading regarding patients of functional integrative medicine and COVID19. My contention us that people going to functional Medicine drs have more disposable income ate healthier to.gegin with and can afford to go to functional Medicine drs, many of which do not take ANY health insurance. That is not to say functional Medicine patients are not being helped by these supplements added and healthy diet and lifestyles protocols. In Pennsylvania, Philadelphia area very few if any functional Medicine drs take health insurance. Furthermore the cost of quality supplements are in fact quite expensive. As well the price. I am pointing out these issues to say that health insurance Should be paying for functional Medicine Drs.
