But, later down the road this will change as the paste dries up over time, especially for those who buy their laptop new but the actual laptop was assembled long ago, sometimes 12 months. I see this happen all the time just based on the comment section alone across several teardown videos featured on B.O.A.T.
I got a used y545 a few days ago and it was marking around 93-95ºC while gaming After the repaste I did following your guide it’s around 85-87ºC Very helpful thank you!
Watching this on my Y545 to do this later lol, had it for at least 3-4 years and its now hitting 94-95 degrees C while gaming so I'm going to replace the thermal paste. Nervous but this helps a lot. So thank you very much!!

one thing is for sure, people aren't goping out to buy the newest gaming laptop there is, because of price and usually the budget gaming laptop comes with bad TIM anyway, so i always change the TIM on laptops for people, as they are bad and always over heating. Hello, I want to inquire about the Lenovo Legion Y545 laptop. My question pertains to the fact that when I hold the laptop from the top, I notice that the lid doesn't fit snugly. In other words, I expect the screen to be flush with the wrist rest when I hold the laptop, but it remains floating. Is this possible with this type of laptop? Thank you for your assistance.
When removing the top deck, is it possible to replace the keyboard? Or do you need to tear it completely down? Trying to figure my best course of action here.
Hopefully one day we can normally upgrade the cups and gpus of laptops as well. I would like to buy a laptop chassis and buy my own parts for it and regularly upgrade up qhen needed instead of buying an entire new laptop. Hopefully one day it'll become a standard.
Interesting delicious teardown as usual, i just noticed the thermal pad over the PCH is somehow double the thickness of the other pads, is that correct?
XTP X Yup it’s all pretty good. There was only one spot of contact that was questionable and after testing with two pastes + stock everything checked out pretty good.
@@BobOfAllTrades I had the Y7000 and i noticed that the thermal "PAD" over the PCH was too thin (1mm), it was not even contacting properly ( i was able to slide a piece of paper in the void ) i fixed it by doubling the Pad to become 2mm thickness and it helped alot with PCH temp which was unusually hot on the Y7000 (can reach 90C°), on the new model Y545 i think i saw the stock pad is double thickness already, that's what i wanted to get a confirmation on.

Have you ever tried using the included spreader paddle of thermal grizzly kryonaut to spread a thin layer of paste Leonardo Da Vinci style? Wonder if it gives better or worse results in laptop sockets I use the pea dot application method not patient enough to "paint". Old desktop habits die hard!
I tried the spreader for kryonaut and was not happy with the results... had to start over. I couldn't get it to spread on smoothly even after heating the tube in hot water.

Hello bob . Been waiting for my question. Thank you in advance . So my mech 17 rtx 2070 when i unplug the charger the rtx card is turning off and i have a frame drop from 100 to 10 fps . So why the card is turning off and when i plug it again it is running again to full power . Ps when unplugged the speed clock is 300 and when plugged the speed clock is 1650 more or less .
Gaming unplugged is not recommended. Very few gaming laptops performance is maintenance when unplugged. Usually it’ll drop to 30fps. Check your Control Center software as it likely defaults back to some sort of Eco mode when unplugged. You’re still not going to get good performance unplugged. That type of draw on the battery would surely end its life quickly. On the flip side, the MacBook will run full bore unplugged still. A few other Windows based machines will too but not many and especially not gaming laptops.
Not sure if I can help, but I'm almost certain it is ur power settings and what happens to ur graphics card usage when ac adapter is plugged in vs unplugged. My laptop did the same thing. Its a power saving feature that can be turned off if you want to run max graphics on battery power.

MrBudge72 Well technically you always separate the top deck from the bottom panel. That’s all I was showcasing in the beginning. You have to have some sort of a guitar pick type solution to run across that edge while prying it apart.
Bob Of All Trades I agree terrific video. I am interested in reposting my Y545 because it does run very hot. Do you have to actually separate the top part of the laptop? There are a bunch of screws on the bottom does the bottom cover not just come off easily? I worry about breaking a clip if I had to separate it like that.

Unplugging the battery is a pretty easy thing to do. Not sure why you’d want to skip it. Have I replaced Memory and Storage with the battery plugged in? I’d be lying if I said “no”.
Hello! I need a bit of help. I've had this laptop for around 3 years and recently had to get a replacement charger. Sadly, for some reason, my replacement charger is overheating whenever I play games for too long. Does anyone know why its happening and how I can fix it?
Edit: Just Ordered. Temps on Kryonaut weren’t any better but the thinner paste improved core temp differential by about 4-5c. I have about 6-8 different pastes in the office I use when needed. Kryonaut has been the most consistent so I recommend it the most to minimize the effort from the viewer.

Hello, this might be a long shot considering this video was a year ago. But I have a Y545 and recently it's causing me problems. The left fan died and doesn't spin anymore. It makes grinding noise and vibration. I opened the laptop and tried to replace the fans, but it's welded to the heatsink? If so, how can I replace the fans on this laptop? Thanks.
That’s a good question. Are you able to at least order a new fan? If it were me I’d start there and one you receive it perhaps a clue as to how the heat pipes and can are physically connected.

I was looking at the fan too, and I can't figure it out. Maybe if I remove the actual heatsink, I'll be able to tell. But I have no thermal paste at the moment to put it back in.

@@butters9153 Nope, there are some plastic tips that close the metal part of the fan with the plastic side so it's almost imposible to open wide the fan without breaking these tips leaving useless the fan. I ended up buying a new fan/thermal assembly from lenovo and replace the whole thing. The whole part cost me $60...ouch!

@@Catchcheese it depends on the version, there are differents versions of each one laptop, there's a y545 with gxt 1050 and there's a y540 with a 1660 ti but also there's a y545 with 1660 ti a i7 9750h, it depends on the laptop specs, while the helios 300 i dont know what versions it has
im bummed that the ram is such a bitch to replace, because i was going to upgrade my laptop but it would be a pain to open up. Higher risk of something going wrong.

That was too painful to watch. Next time, after you remove your ring (assuming it's metal), try flipping the system on it's top, then lifting the bottom cover off the system versus the entire computer off the cover.

I have a pretty old laptop like 6 years old and it is hard to get into. I tried finding a laptop ram upgrade for 16 gigs and turns out they dont even make 16 gig sticks for that.

Try putting your laptop in a toaster and put it up to around 20degrees.

Fujipoly is great but I don’t recall the thickness. You’ll get these in small sheets and have to cut to size.

Heavy gaming on battery power is not recommended. If there's something that uses very little GPU and CPU power then you can probably manage unplugged.

Can give Mastergel Maker Nano a try. Performs better than Kryonaut in my Y530.

Negative. These are BGA soldered in place. Sadly that is the standard for laptops with few exceptions.

Sure but a laptop 1660 ti and 1440p might be stretching its capabilities on AAA titles. But it might be ok depending on what you play 👍

MoonZ_XT, y545 is about 30% better in FPS and had a core that’s 2gens newer than the Helios, don’t know about the y540

im bummed that the ram is such a bitch to replace, because i was going to upgrade my laptop but it would be a pain to open up. Higher risk of something going wrong.
Did you or anyone try or if its possible too like put the bigger battery from the Y740 into the Y540 or Y545 ?
The 17” bigger battery fits in some of the 15” models. Not 100% sure what ones as the m.2 layout differs.

That was too painful to watch. Next time, after you remove your ring (assuming it's metal), try flipping the system on it's top, then lifting the bottom cover off the system versus the entire computer off the cover.

It’s amazing how much easier it is to access the internals of laptops today versus just 5 years ago.
5 years ago they all had panels that you just unscrewed now you need a special tool to pry the entire back off. They got harder.
I have a pretty old laptop like 6 years old and it is hard to get into. I tried finding a laptop ram upgrade for 16 gigs and turns out they dont even make 16 gig sticks for that.
@@pilsplease7561 Yeah, and you could remove charging ports and replace them via cables. Now they are soldered directly to the freaking system board. Not easier to replace, that's for sure...
