    THANK YOU! I’ve seen so many demonstrations like the wrong one you showed and I knew it was wrong. It drove me crazy too. Painters tape will work too to,keep your place marked too. I have the Janome 1000 and I LOVE this machine. I also have a B101 Blind Hemmer that is no longer produced. For blind hemming it’s a life saver. I make children’s dresses using selvage to selvage making the skirt 90”. That’s a lot of fabric to hem by hand. I also make a wide 4-5”hem doubled with the first hem blind stitched and then the second hem blind hemmed. This way most kids grow up and when they out grow out the length but not the dress all mom has to do is let down the first hem pass out the demarcation line and the child has another year or so out of the same dress.

      Sandrea White I'm surprised at some of the machines, especially the expensive ones, they don't have guide/gauge lines marked on the machine to help the sewer to keep a consistent width on the hem. Just so happens my machine is exactly 1/2" from the left needle to the end of my feed plate. I never use anything above the 1/2" hem. I absolutely hate to see posts that show sewing down the middle of the hem and then have to trim. The machine is made to cover raw edges, it's not a "sew down the middle and trim machine". It's a matter of taking ones time to do it right and you can feel and see where the underside is to line things up to cover that raw edge. I wish those that sew and trim would just not be in such a hurry and take the time to learn covering the edges correctly.

    Thanks, Jeanette! I am a newbie and I made my hem the "wrong" way. Thankfully it's a knit so it won't ravel. The hem was 1" so next time I will trim it before coverstitching it. Appreciate the video!

    • @jeanetteweger5518
      @jeanetteweger5518  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shari McNeill you don't need to trim, you can do a 1" hem on the coverstitch.

    Totally new to coverstitch. I've been using a serger for many years though. My question, What are your settings for Hems? Do they differ for woven's and knits? Thank you so much!

    • @jeanetteweger5518
      @jeanetteweger5518  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@remithreadz1560 you’re going to love using a coverstitch, it makes everything look so professional. The settings may vary depending on the fabric. Just make it a habit to do a sample stitch out using the fabric you’re using for the garment with. If adjustments are needed, don’t adjust everything, sometimes it only takes maybe adjusting the differential or just the looper. Some go crazy and start adjusting every dial on the machine.

    • @remithreadz1560
      @remithreadz1560 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jeanetteweger5518 Thank you, for your quick reply! Is there "starting" settings I can start with and then adjust if/as needed? I'm scared to even open the box, I've had it for 2 months 😞

    • @jeanetteweger5518
      @jeanetteweger5518  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@remithreadz1560 start with the factory settings of all on 4 on the needles and looper. Change the stitch length to 4 and leave the differential at the factory setting as well.
      Definitely adjust your presser foot (on to of the machine) so that the top of the silver screw is 1/2” of the top of the machine. Once there leave it, that’s the sweet spot. Also get different needles, I buy mine on eBay, you want Organ brand 90/14 SUK BP, these seem to work the best. If you’re going to sew fleece, spandex, linen, French terry, buy some 80/12 sharp needles.

    Based on my experience and what I am reading in other youtube comments I am starting to suspect that there are a lot of lemons among the 2340CVs. At 3:44 you simply pull the upper threads with no resistance. When I try to do that on my machine, even while holding down the tension release buttons there is a LOT of friction.

    • @jeanetteweger5518
      @jeanetteweger5518  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marco Grubert your are wrong, in ALL my videos when I pull the threads to release the garment I am in fact pushing the tension buttons on top, you cannot see my right hand. I have yet come across anyone with a "lemon" Brother 2340CV. Also, how long have you had your machine? Mine is 2 years old, it is well used on a daily basis. If you need help please private message me and I'll help you as much as I can. This is really a great machine, you just need practice and patience.

    • @jeanetteweger5518
      @jeanetteweger5518  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marco Grubert where are you pulling the threads at?

    • @totallynotabot151
      @totallynotabot151 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I grab the threads between the needle bar and the needle eyes, then push the tension release for the two needle threads. That sort of works, but as I said it requires a lot of force to pull those threads toward me.

    • @jeanetteweger5518
      @jeanetteweger5518  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you using a thick thread? Are you pulling the threads one at a time?

    • @totallynotabot151
      @totallynotabot151 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular polyester Surelock serger thread. Based on the machine's instruction manual I have been pulling them both at the same time.

    • @jeanetteweger5518
      @jeanetteweger5518  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that's easy!! Measure from your left needle over 1" and where it measures the 1" on the right, that's where you will align your turn edge to. It should end up on one of the black lines and to better keep track of which one, put a piece of blue tape or some even tape a Lego to help them know where to keep the turned edge because after a while you will question yourself on what line you were suppose to be on!!!LOL
      Hope this helps, let me know if it does!

    • @debbiebridges5121
      @debbiebridges5121 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you I measured on my fabric 1 inch and was trying to line up that way. Any suggestions how to make sure on the other side that it’s catching the end of the fabric?

    • @jeanetteweger5518
      @jeanetteweger5518  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@debbiebridges5121 to get you use to gauging a 1" turn under so as to not having to iron a complete garment, I suggest get a long piece of scrap fabric, about 24", iron about 12" of that with a 1" hem. Start as usual on the ironed piece and by time you reach the end of the ironed area you should be able to gauge 1" to carry on finishing the unironed area. Do that a few times and you should get where to gauge it at. As your sewing, feel with your finger tips where the raw edge is, it should be between the 2 needles. Feel with the fingers and every so often watch where your fingers line up. I also suggest to your watching between your needles and your guide edge but definitely feel where the raw edge is as it's feeding to the needles. Hope this makes sense!

    Hi Jeanette. Can you please help. When I do a coverstitch hem on jersey, say on the hem of leggings, it seems that the hem will not stretch very much, and if I was to pull on it, the threads would break. What am I doing wrong, is it the stitch length, or the tensions maybe?

    • @jeanetteweger5518

      I use a lot of knit fabrics, and what I do is use my finger to feel the edge of the hem through the fabric and feed it into the foot so it's just to the right of the left needle. I have a spot on my foot that I use as a visual target and aim the fabric edge that I can feel underneath toward it. My finger is on top of both layers of fabric. Since I started doing this, my hems are just about perfect.

    Just found your videos today searching for hints/tips for this machine. Wow! I've been doing some things so wrong in the last year. Your hems looks amazing! NO MORE trimming for me! I knew it was wrong, but didn't know how to fix it. Switched out my settings and know that my quality and speed will greatly improve.

      Texas Leslie I'm in 2 Brother 2340CV groups, and both are helpful. One is Brother 2340CV Hints and Tips and the other is Brother 2340 coverstitch. Everyone is so helpful. And actually I'm in a third group, Coverstitch/Coverlock, that group has different coverstitch machine owners and still very helpful and informative. I hope you're not a seamstress that hammers, irons or used a hump jumper, there's no need if your machine settings are set correctly. Join the other groups, you'll be glad you did!!!!
