I just love how Nintendo keeps innovating on 2D games, as they did with Metroid Dread, Mario Wonder, and now with Zelda. They're not letting these sidescroller and top-down games die as an exclusively "throwback to the past" trope, instead making them into fresh experiences worthy of the same praise as the 3D titles.
Metroid dread is still the old formula and echos of wisdom is a side game, not a 2D link game. I think these game should be meant to modernise the formula and also introduce new one off elements. They should not be the 3D game but in 2D

5:07 Three games in, and they still can’t be bothered to design a better UI (or even different) for accessing items. They should really just trim the fat, especially when a lot are going to serve the same function. Focusing on quantity is stupid when all it amounts to is more wasted time searching through dozens and dozens of items that mostly do the same thing as several other options. A radial menu with different categories is one suggestion. Or heck, use the same row menu, but have them stacked. So something like “object that takes up one square” is on one square in the row (shows last used item), then you press up and vertically scroll through them. It means you can quickly access something with a unique purpose, but still use an aesthetically different variant if you feel like it. Rather than they’re all jumbled into one long line with no real way to understand what is where at any point.
If it takes more than an hour from the start to the first dungeon, it suggests that this game is looong and playing it through takes time. It sounds promising.
I have a hypothesis. If this game is successful I think we will see Link's games focus on combat and Zelda's game focus on puzzles - Much like the Oracle games.

I have a few questions… 1. If you accidentally create too many echoes, is it possible that you can delete some of them or you have to wait until one disappears 2. After getting the cloak, is it possible to take it off or are you forced to wear it because I prefer the way Zelda looks without the cloak. 3. When obtaining the sword fighter form how do you replenish it's energy??
You’re probably forced to have the cloak on for some time, but definitely not the entire game because we already know there’s gonna be multiple different outfits to choose from. You replenish the energy for the Swordfighter form only in the Still World. In this video they said you get it from killing enemies, but you can probably also get it from rocks, pots, and grass.

My cousin had a n64 growing up and I enjoyed ocarina of time but I enjoyed watching him play more than actually playing it. I stopped gaming for a really long time and then a couple years ago my cousin gave me his old 2ds with a few games. One of those games was a link between worlds. I fell in love with that game just like I did the older ones back in the day. It was that same sense of discovery and mysteries but also had some more modern sensibilities like an interactive detailed map and better controls. I’m genuinely disappointed. As much as I enjoyed BOTW, TOTK, and Link’s Awakening, I was really hoping we would get a strong story game again. I love zelda but I have interest in this.
I wasn’t expecting much in terms of story for a 2D Zelda game, but I am disappointed that for Zelda’s own game, a lot of it is reused. The art style, the world (more or less), and enemies. It doesn’t have its own distinct visual identity which is something I appreciated in each iteration (outside sequels). I’m fine with them reusing the chibi models as a consequence for making it quicker/easier because of the echo mechanic, but would it kill them to change up the textures or something? Like, even Pokemon Legends Arceus threw a filter on top and a few other things to try to visually differentiate it. They even ripped off BotW’s menus 1:1 (mechanically and visually). This is the 3rd game now that uses that exact same menu style, and it still goes unchanged despite being terrible for games about accessing dozens and dozens of items on-the-fly. I don’t know how or why no one has fixed it. One of the worst things in those games is wasting time scrolling through them trying to find what you want. Especially when a lot of them serve the same functions. What ends up happening is you only bother with a few things that are closer to your cursor and disregard the rest, because it becomes unbearable. Now, this’ll be a more slower paced game in the dungeons where you’ll have to think more so maybe it’ll be more tolerable, but it’s still inexcusable they haven’t improved it at all. At least stack them into categories.
My biggest fear for this game is that it will be too easy. Being able to solve a puzzle in any creative way you want is so awesome. But if everything can be solved by just spawning beds everywhere that will be less awesome. I hope im wrong and there is alot of challenge
@@blackmario1117Hero mode doesn't fix the puzzles it just makes everything hit harder, you can't get heart drops and some accessories don't work lol. If the same solution works for a lot of things Hero mode cannot fix this
I’m sure first time playthroughs will be a lot more challenging since people playing won’t know where to get certain echoes, but I could see this being too easy as early as the second playthrough once you know where everything is and how to solve each problem you come across.
I really want to know about how Pieces of Heart are earned because I think if they are going to come back they should be rewards for side quests and exploration and NOT minigames. Because I feel that’s one element from previous games that shouldn’t return as it feels very archaic in 2024.
It's great that Nintendo is finally making 2D games again that evolves; while still keeeping it's formula. With games like Metroid Dread & Mario Wonder being so great and easy to get into, this game is gonna follow that footstep and continues making more 2D platforming games in the future.
I’m pretty optimistic, and I wasn’t keen on BotW/TotK. I think open-world can work, but everyone makes the world too big and thus spread themselves too thin to make it interesting. But the world is a smaller world, no physics and limited perspective (can’t fly over something in top-down view like in 3D). The fact it looks to have proper dungeons (segmented rooms, multiple floors, likely more creative puzzles to overcome) gives me hope. Sure you’re not getting a bespoke item halfway through a dungeon (you’ll get echoes all throughout the game, and give a good reason for exploring), but if the puzzles are actually well designed, then being able to come up with your own solution could be fun. BotW/TotK aren’t in that aspect because the puzzles are one-note, so you don’t really need to think of a creative solution. Use stasis to hit something a long distance, or for TotK making a car/boat/plane solved 99% of problems. Your initial thought in those games is the optimal path and anything else is just for novelty, not even an in-game bonus.
If there were any doubts about Nintendo's vision for the Zelda series post-BotW, I think those doubts are now out the window. Breath of the Wild has fundamentally changed how Nintendo approaches this series as a whole, and just leave it to them to explore its potential. It's incredibly exciting to watch unfold!
It forces you to be more creative in combat. I like it. It makes you have to rely on echoes but at the same time if you feel like just using the sword it’s also an option for a short period and it seems you’ll be able to upgrade it so it last longer
@@KlaxyndYou mean the Swordfighter Form, that Brandon also showed off in this very video...? I don't think Nintendo has said anything about her just getting a sword to wield normally.
A GOTY + a runner-up. More than 400 awards combined. 50+ million sales (more than every other home console Zelda combined). I feel sorry for people like you 😂😂😂
@kellygreens6748 1. Goty is a joke 2. Critics will give any zelda game a 10 just for existing 3. If numbers = quality then fortnite is better than anything nintendo has ever put out
It's extremely unfortunate, as this does not seem to be in any way challenging, just annoying to flick through a hundred summons. They've successfully screwed over 2d and 3d zelda in just 2 games.
It could be challenging. We’ll have to see more beyond just the introductory dungeon. But I agree that them using the exact same BotW menu, and still not improving it after 3 games despite having to scroll through dozens of items is inexcusable. At least have categories of items or radial menus. Too much focus on quantity when all that means is searching through tons of objects that share the same functions. It’s like they don’t even play test their games.
@@mrshmuga9 I agree. But it's the same design philosophy as totk, which was also brainless. That's what I mean when I say easy. It doesn't seem like you'll have to really think hard about which echo gets the job done, just the closest in the menu.
@@knatkniht I don't think that aspect is what kills it (although it will make it more annoying). You could have a lot of tools and still be challenging. Most are going to have overlap in functions anyway. The thing that gives me optimism that it won't be (or not completely) shallow, is that the dungeon design seems to be traditional. No terminals, you need keys, you have multiple floors and segmented rooms... if that's the case I think it's more likely the puzzles will be closer to the traditional games as well instead of BotW/TotK. Whereas the BotW/TotK elements they're using to change it up is allowing you to tackle anything in any order (pretty sure) and not having to defeat a dungeon to get items/tools. You'll get the most pertinent ones all from the start, and then others all throughout your adventure. I honestly believed it would be a complete overhaul, so when I saw how much was actually retained from the classic games, it made me reconsider. Still gonna wait for some trusted reviews, and watch a bit of a playthrough though. I was disappointed how underutilized the vehicle mechanic was in TotK, so I'm still going to be cautious.
I am about 70% of the way through it, leaked copies run amazingly well and it is very, very MID but it's still a great game I just prefer the BOTW style nothing more nothing less.
There is no timeline. They just make games, some connected to a previous one, others not. Do you really think Aonuma and the story writers ponder upon that? Just as silly as a Mario timeline. The only series with an actual timeline is Metroid and even there, the Prime games don't really fit.
Come on, they've clearly retconned to fit Prime into the main series. Think about it like this: you have ZM where it's Samus' first mission. Then, you have SR where a partially mechanical Ridley shows up. What explains this discontinuity? MP1-3
The whole timeline obsession is just crazy to me. I mean theorize about it all you want, but to me its clear the "official" timeline is just thrown together to ease fans. And when a zelda game doesnt "perfectly" fit in the delusional timeline, people call it a bad zelda game. Ok. Zelda theorizing is a lot of fun, i personally also love it. But obsessing about a timeline that even the developers didnt want to make and are not sure about is just kinda weird to me.
@@GameTimeNLLthey sold a game (Skyward Sword) on the premise of a timeline and also confirmed they kept and internal timeline of the games. It’s not weird, it’s accountability. If they wanted a post BOTW timeline that’s fine but if the Devs have such little care for their own creations why should the fans even bother supporting it?
@@Physicalchemistry15151I agree with 90% of what you’re saying, but I think it’s also valid to make a game and not want to have to think about where it fits. Because at some point it’s gonna get convoluted and wanting to start fresh without worrying about that is fair after 20+ years fitting all the games in. Especially when the connections between individual games are loose anyway. Separated by hundreds of years, where you might have one big moment that connects them, but virtually all characters are dead so little actually matters. They’re basically all isolated games outside sequels. You’re not gonna play Twilight Princess and find out what the Yeti’s up to in Skyward Sword. Or hear what happened to Groose after SS in BotW. Some don’t even take place in Hyrule (namely the 2D games). My only problem is they branch off to be free from worrying about where it fits… just to make a “story” that has next to no story or terrible stories anyway. They had an advantage from not being connected and still did nothing with it. It’s clear they either don’t want to make stories or have a poor mindset about stories. Going off memory, but BotW probably could’ve been some sort of OoT “sequel” where the champions are descendants of the sages. The only one that doesn’t work is Revali because the rito only exist as a result of WW, but I don’t think sages are mentioned or at least there’s no Gerudo one in WW so it couldn’t be directly before or after WW. But you could probably have some reason why it’s possible or that there’s another branch.
Ugh very disappointed that ultrahand is basically back. I know people enjoy the creativity it enables but that just makes everything too easy for me, as you can cheese everything.
That is what they are going for though. It is the style of Zelda games now. I think every Zelda game will have their ultrahand. This is what Zelda is after all.
When people call this game 2D Zelda, they mean top down. For a long time, top down Zelda's also used 2D sprites, so it's just kind of become interchangeable these days even if it is technically incorrect.
Looks to have traditional dungeons (segmented rooms, keys, multiple floors, no terminals…), so I’m more optimistic after seeing that played a bit. Open-world can be done well, but I find most games make the world too big so the idealization of that concept is never truly realized. And this world is obviously going to be way smaller than a 3D open-world game, so it’s possible. FYI, I wasn’t crazy for BotW & TotK. I’m still cautious of whether the puzzles will require more creative thinking or if they’re just going to be basic, but I’m optimistic. I’ll probably watch someone play through the first two dungeons before seeing if it’s worth getting. The fact the dungeons don’t seem to be compromised (by doing the opposite of what I listed above) is already a good sign that they’re not completely abandoning having traditional elements.

It’s funny you’re referring to this as a 2D game. Maybe you mean to be referring to a “top-down” game because this is very 3d
I wonder if the heartpin is replaced by another accessory in hero mode.
Nope, Hero Mode states that some accessories won't work, most likely referring to the heart drop accessories.
What if you don't learn the first defeated enemy? Will the next be learnable?
Yes!
That's awesome! I know that I'll probably forget some, especially if I have some goal in mind.
Looks like the future of Zelda isn't ruined after all!
This has spoilers. whatevah
I really want to know about how Pieces of Heart are earned because I think if they are going to come back they should be rewards for side quests and exploration and NOT minigames. Because I feel that’s one element from previous games that shouldn’t return as it feels very archaic in 2024.
We found some in the overworld!
Please pray tell what is "archaic" about receiving rewards for engaging with the game side content
It's great that Nintendo is finally making 2D games again that evolves; while still keeeping it's formula. With games like Metroid Dread & Mario Wonder being so great and easy to get into, this game is gonna follow that footstep and continues making more 2D platforming games in the future.
First they took traditional 3D Zelda from us and now 2D. Really missing the classic formula rn
I really hope is really different from botw and totk
This is not a 2D game.
it is a traditional 2d Zelda game.
That’s the one where Zelda is a girl, right?
That doesn't sound good
The sword-fighter form being on a timer is a big disappointment
I think the idea is to use echoes more than a sword. It does look like it can be upgraded though
It forces you to be more creative in combat. I like it. It makes you have to rely on echoes but at the same time if you feel like just using the sword it’s also an option for a short period and it seems you’ll be able to upgrade it so it last longer
Glad to see Zelda is dead. Welcome to Minecraft for the new generation crying because they can't solve a puzzle. So "Child mode On."
STFU BRO ITS SOMETHING NEW JESUS
Is zelda usually a boy?
The only thing I dislike is combat seems slow unless using the sword
The game is going to be way too easy due to overwrought “player freedom”
I thought this too.
Very innovative but i just don't like this type of gameplay for this series.. zelda turned into a human xerox
Why can't Zelda use her Goddess powers? Why does she need to rely on Tri? Nintendo nerfed Zelda!
darksouls has ruined most of your brains and I can’t stand it. Everything has to be difficult now or it’s “not to our taste” it’s so annoying
Why did he say she doesn’t have a sword yet?
There’s been a video on Nintendo’s official channel that shows Zelda can get a sword later in Echoes of Wisdom.
@@KlaxyndYou mean the Swordfighter Form, that Brandon also showed off in this very video...? I don't think Nintendo has said anything about her just getting a sword to wield normally.

@@kellygreens6748 Why would you? It's fundamentally stupid to think popularity determines if someone should like something.

If they wanted a post BOTW timeline that’s fine but if the Devs have such little care for their own creations why should the fans even bother supporting it?
you know that almost all Zelda games before Skyward Sword were prequels and sequels to other games
This is the first actual Zelda game... Should be called Link
"2D"...hahahahagha, WHAT? its 3D!!! you mean a top-to-down perspective or panorama, not "2D!"
Ugh very disappointed that ultrahand is basically back. I know people enjoy the creativity it enables but that just makes everything too easy for me, as you can cheese everything.

I'd consider it top-down, almost isometric
When people call this game 2D Zelda, they mean top down. For a long time, top down Zelda's also used 2D sprites, so it's just kind of become interchangeable these days even if it is technically incorrect.

I'd say it is more traditional than the Switch 3D ones. Of course, Zelda has the triforce of wisdom and not the same abilities as Link.
Please stop calling it «2D»-Zelda, it’s not even 2.5D, it’s 3D - both in graphics and gameplay. Call it what it is; «Top Down»-Zelda.
2.5D is more accurate, since there are side scrolling segments.
