Just found this video, 10 years on... But what you want the top portion for, is to lean on while you're picking apples. Or to hold tools while you are working up there.
I like your design. I may just copy it with materials I can harvest here in Kentucky.

Hey James do you mean why it comes to a point. If so it's so the ladder is easier to put up through the branches. Also the ladder is much stronger if it is attached at the top and something like you said to lean against but narrow so it's not in your way of getting to what you want to prune.

what do you think about adjustable third legs and also why does the third leg only go 2/3 up? about to put a leg on mine and want the ultimate practicality, especially on uneven terrain and some wild apple slopes

Hey rugged ridge. I don't see anything wrong with a adjustable leg. You can adjust it some by how wide you set the third leg. It only goes up so far because very seldom you step up any farther than the one before it. When you get on bigger trees you just put the ladder in the tree and don't use the leg.

Hey ho. Also I found it only good up to about 16 ft tree . You need a longer ladder for taller ones.

I don't know why I'm only getting this video now. Anyway, good work, that's a fine ladder and one I'd be happy to scamper up.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

Really nice work. Never seen the tripod style before so that's got me thinking. I should try one as we have some young peach trees that need a 20 footer but limbs are not sturdy enough to take our big old 30footer. . We have some nice straight young white (mountain?) That I have been eyeing for the ladder project... which I think is what my grandfather used for for his three ladders we still use 80 years later , I think!!! Think I will try to make the whole ladder from the ash??? Instead of the red spruce...will that be ok?

Looks sturdy and well built. You will be using it on your own trees before you know it.
