- Part 313 of L&L 79-80 playlist. 1980 Laura is walking in the park and finds a marigold. It reminds her of her conversation with Luke in their room at the Medallion over the same flower. Luke shows up, and Laura apologizes for interrupting him...

I for one think the “doormat” comment is spot on-regardless of their intentions, she did spend a lot of time getting yelled at, shook and slapped around-literally and figuratively-by the men in her life. And she doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life being led on a leash. She realizes that she needs to find her own identity and stand on her own two feet, and not be at the mercy of everyone else’s opinions or views of her, before she can have a real relationship with Luke. Getting back together with him is in her plan, but at this point, it’s not going to be her priority. She needs to take care of herself first. So no more crying and no more begging. Time to pick herself up, dust herself off and move forward.
With the character of Laura's history - her beauty seemed to make men crazy and use her and abuse her - this moment for her character was defining. She had to endure David Hamilton, Scotty, the rape, and then dealing with Luke's continued desire for her. The men in her life were always coming on strong, except for Rick (that got butchered much later!). This feistiness everyone speaks of was borne out of necessity to be independent of the men in her life. That independence makes the sticky door era a fun experience for the whole audience. Where, when she wins the man, she wins him on her terms.

I wonder what Luke was going to say when Laura interrupted at 3:08, when he starts with, "Laura I think.." and she cuts him off and talks about getting her life in order. I think he might have decided to give her another chance and she stepped right on it. But of course she had to so that the independent sticky door storyline could go forward.
Definitely interested in watching! These were compelling years on GH and I'm loving finding myself just as caught up in it now.
This is crazy watching this again after 40-years and I still cry and feel the hurt. I only wish the ending of their love story would have been a happy one. When Luke left GH I left GH too.
They're just the most precious people in the world and need to be mashed together until they have no choice but to kiss and admit that they're soulmates who must never separate. :)
It's refreshing to see that being called a tramp affected Laura so deeply. These days women on television would consider it a compliment, as no one seems to have any morals or propriety on current day soaps. I love TG's delivery of "doormat?" said three times! He has treated her like a princes on a pedestal and is incredulous that she could accuse him of that! Such a funny scene!
Why are women tramps but men aren't?
THAT'S why no one today seems to have no "morals." Because the option is the double standard of a patriarchal society where women are property and their sex is owned and decided on by men. Never again.

Convention and Luke never really went together.He knows that she loves him and wants him. I think it doesn't make no sense to him having a comitment to a formallity (like marriage), as opposed to a person.Hhe knows it is not Scott between them. If she had feeling for Scott, I think it would be different. He has said that it is the fact that Scott called her a tramp that is between them, and that makes no sense to him.
Love this sassy Laura. She knows what she wants, Luke, but is determined to be independent and her own person. Didn't see her as a doormat with Luke. Maybe that was just a jab. LOL Love Luke's scruffy beard...a protective cover? Remembering the first motel for these two at the beginning of the summer when she said she wouldn't kiss him..called him "unshaven". Perhaps he feels the now scruffiness will keep her at bay?
Oh Laura knows how to push Luke's buttons! A doormat! Being bossed around by him and Hutch! HA! :)

I think she had a lot of risudual hang ups from the DAvid Hamilton mess... she was SO young, and had an affair with this much older man, who made her feel like a jerk... It's more like Scott putting words to how she feels about herself... not just him. JMHO.

I don't know how to feel about this clip. I mean, I'm glad Laura has found a sense of confidence in her life, but it seems like she's being a bit harsh on Luke. Still, he didn't want to forgive her and give her a second chance, so there. lol It's a mess, ain't it? ;-)
Just for the sake of perpetuating the dragging out of the reconciliation. I was impatient at the time and am glad to speed through faster and not the slow way of 1980.
While I think Laura was wrong, I think Luke also needs to be more understanding of her. Her anger at him is coming out, which isn't a bad thing for their relationship.
He knows she's not whatever a "tramp" is, and doesn't understand why it affects her so much.

They made Genie grow up too fast for ratings. At that time I watched Another World and GH didn't matter to me. Genie had to have just turned 18 years old. Bless her heart!
@sueluvu When Luke went on the run the disco was sold to Susan Moore. It was not owned by Luke, it was owned by Frank Smith, he just ran it.. and umm.. not thinking those people want to do any favors for him!
3:10 reminds me of exactly what Laura said to Luke in 2008 about going to France... to get her life (heatlh) in order.

@320dufferin Thanks! I remember the Lassa Fever storyline, that must have been when I started watching. Laura was on probation so the David Hamilton storyline must have just ended.

@karenone2 if you do a search for gh 1978 or general hospital 1978, there are some of older clips with the first Rick and the first Monica and a couple of david hamilton , but only as a guest in the Webber house. Theres nothing about the murder and the trial. There is also 2 weeks from Nov. 1978 of complete episodes, theres the Christmas episode and also other misc. clips + The Lassa Fever 1979 clips. I watched all of these along with these L&L beginning
