Ren had the balls to just do Money Game 2 recently on his first tv appearance at the Sky Arts Awards 2024 in front of an audience of the types of people that he’s singing about. It’s worth checking out. 💜 He said he was feeling awful that day but he did very well.

Yeah, love ya, but rich people are not what ren sees as bad. GREED. That’s his issue. He hates the fact that people will sacrifice the betterment of the world for cash. That’s basically the gist.

Depends how you define Rich, Wealthy, Greedy I think Ren means those that have more than they need, multiple mansions/yachts more than you could spend in a life time. Those that have sufficient but still want more, for what purpose? Also those that obtain it at the expense of others.

The Money Game Trilogy is a Modern Day Fable on the Evils of Greed. Ren stated "Mold will Grow upon the Surface and Consumes til it dies, and Our Fate could be the same without this Story to the Wise" The more I hear from Ren the more I realize his Solution is to be a Teacher Opening the Eyes of Millions with his Art and his Heart! And I think Ren's message is Crystal Clear. Ambition and Passion Without Compassion Will Cause the World To Burn! But Ambition and Passion WITH Compassion Can Save It! These Songs are meant to Inform and Educate the Compassionate and a Stark Reminder to the Greedy "WE SEE YOU!"

“Not all” is very common as a defence but there are reasons for generalisations. Never apply generalisations to individuals; but generalisations are useful to groups. Also - most people think “rich” is what they might be. That is not the same as the 1%.
IMO there is a ceiling to wealth beyond which you are immoral. No one is an ethical billionaire. It’s not possible to be one without having essentially stolen that from others. It’s not ethical to be one in a world with such imbalance. Etc.

    • @Abigirl_Reacts
      @Abigirl_Reacts  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't know anything about being a billionaire but I just can't believe that ALL of them got there by stealing! That's all I'm trying to say, I can't generalize a whole group of people regardless of what it is. Just the way I am I guess! But thank you for your valuable opinion ^_^

    • @rogerstarkey5390
      @rogerstarkey5390 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

There's a certain irony in "a particular country" historically billed as "The land of opportunity" where "Making something of oneself" has always been admired, yet an arbitrary number, or designation now somehow makes one automatically "immoral"?
I suppose I could point out that a "billionaire" in 2024 is probably equivalent to a "Millionaire" in... 1960?
      .
There's a certain level of "success" (Monetary wealth) beyond which the gain is self perpetuating.
Let's say 5 times "Living requirement"?
Once the excess is reinvested (For personal gain) it's only a matter of time before it compounds to the "Billion" level.
What's more important is the intention of the individual.
Are they motivated by personal gain or mission?
Are they generating benefit for others?
(I'll let you guess the example)
IF their gain is not realised in "cash", but instead left "Available but not taken" in the vessels (Companies?) which generated the income, AND those companies have a common goal to benefit others, would that not be "Ethical"?
      .
As the saying goes, "You can't make omelettes without breaking eggs"
You can't CHANGE a system without being IN the system.
You can't FIGHT money without HAVING money.
(something which was almost VERY evident in the earlier days of the particular example I'm thinking of )
In certain cases only time will tell if an individual is/ was on "the right side of history"

@@Abigirl_Reactsthe thing is in that case what ren says still applies, because even i f we assume someone made it to being a billionaire doing absolutely nothing morally shady (which is already a big if and is likely only realistic from someone with generational wealth to start far ahead with) then they still dont care for the poor because they have far more money than they could ever reasonably need whilst people are struggling and dying so just by possessing so much superfluous wealth they are acting immorally and selfishly thats the problem. Good people will never become billionaires because they will either stop seeking or start ofloading money before reaching that ludicrous figure.

Ren is trying to get the guitar player(Romain) to 'open his eyes' to the 'Money Game'. In the final scene he follows a practice pursued by Buddhist Monks in history. The self-immolation was used to 'open the peoples eyes' that they 'live in a burning house'.

The major think you will have missed is that in the 3rd one where he ends the song with "presses on the trigger of the money game" it ends. If he would have continued it would have been "rain rain"... Etc. jimmy was in the rain, had poison in his veins. It's poetic.

The father of the sons that started Shell Oil actually sold shells and made a fortune. Conch shells mostly and people hadn't seen before in the early 1900s. Eventually making jewellery, necklaces and such. 1932 the sons started Shell Oil.

@Abigirl_Reacts Plus, the early diamond companies did exactly what he said. They stored millions of diamonds so people would think they are rare, plus they'd have the market cornered. They're not rare at all. When I learned about that, I stopped wearing "precious" gems. I felt like buying them was akin to setting your money on fire. And the line "stock pile 'em high until they're rarer than a diamond" was Ren's cheeky reference to that.

Ren gave us a little history lesson in part one and then followed it up with an economics class. It takes a very clever and flexible mind to break down a complex topic in a way that everyone can understand it. To then do it using a well known nursery rhyme? And in the form of rap? Ren is a genius.
Anyway while part 3 does stand on its own, rewatch it now with these two in mind. He might not sing the chorus, but think about what happens in the story and the video…

    .
    An interpretation.
    1) The System
    2) The Method
    3) The Analogy.
    .
    MG1
    Ren: The Establishment
Protected from "The Rain" (Soon to become "The Storm") By the Poncho.
Romain Axisa...Guitarist: (You'll get to know him later)
Representing "The Population". "Playing along", obeying orders.
    .
    A brief musical synopsis
Including the reference to "Turns a Saint into a Sinner, A Child into a Killer".... Meet Jimmy (The order is important?)
    .
    Political interlude:
Composed "Peak Trump" (2018?) Hence the "Southern Border issue/ Immigrant/ Hate" reference.
Also the reference "there's no Left, There's no Right, in the middle 'We' sleep". The party doesn't matter, it's one self serving "club".
    .
Then, "The Population" Gains insight (Eyes) and sees the system for what it is.
At that point there's a choice (Except there isn't)
    "Burn" the "Population"
    Or
Burn "The Establishment" (If there's any doubt, this is confirmed by the cross-reference to the "Number 10 Downing Street Burns in a fire" from Part 2)
    .
The poncho (Protection) comes off, and the system does "burn"
    Side note...
Look at the current Geopolitical situation, We have "a State" (In the Middle East) Seemingly trying to "Burn" a population(?)
We have several global players where it seems at least some of the population can see the cracks forming in the Establishment?
    ...
Parallel drawn by Jimmy, who "Comes home out of the *rain* soaking wet (no protection) upon a wheelchair......
He has everything he wants...." (You can *print* money, but if it's worth nothing...)
Ending with the "child (from MG1) with his finger on the trigger"..... (Jimmy) PULLING the trigger (HIS "Storm")
    ALL connected....
(And I probably missed a few)

9:16 - haha, I was kinda waiting for that.
9:18 - lol, tryna play it cool, I see. ;)
9:47 - why? For the art.
10:47 - I mean, maybe. But... you sure about that? Well, and what definition of "Rich" are we going by, here? Also, have you encountered Anand Giridharadas? Maybe check out his Oxford Union talk, or his "Winners Take All" book and/or talk (e.g. at, ironically, Google)... because while at some level I'm sure you're right, it is, to me, immoral _simply to allow yourself to be_ particularly wealthy (not just have-a-nice-house level, mind you, but like... really wealthy) for anything but a brief not-in-your-control period of time (unexpected inheritance or lottery win or something), AND, a whole lot of those who are and remain wealthy do a whole lot of reputation washing doing "nice things" to make us _think_ they're not awful people, when in fact, they're creating problems and even death all around them, often enough. Anand does a nice job of laying this out, in my opinion.... And... 11:20... I dunno, while we may have different definitions of "rich" in mind, in which case I agree with you, then I think they _have_ to not care for you, in order to become and remain "rich" (by the definition I'm thinking of -- nebulous as it may be). Like, it's just baked in to how these things work.
12:37 - often, yes. We could be doing things _so_ very differently... And "bleeding resources all dry" means death, so... even if it's "needed", it's not a great choice, it seems to me.
13:56 - I've always heard it as «old», or maybe «ol'», but yeah, old. Could be wrong, but that's how I've always heard it.
15:02 - because they're making breathable air rare. (It's dystopian af, but... it's happening. See Boost Oxygen or "oxygen bars", etc. Oh yeah, and smog. Does anybody remember the notion of smog? I know that's kind of a thing from LA in the 1980's, but... dirty air is still a thing in lots of places, and that's likely to get worse.) This is all described by a phenomenon called "enclosure of the commons", and another called "primitive accumulation" (though "primitive" is a horrible name for it, that's the common term in use, sadly)... worth looking into the concepts, in my opinion. Just, know thar be dragons there... you'll learn some dark realities. But hey, it's reality, so, it's good to know, mostly? Just... have some support or self care lined up when you do it, I guess.
19:24 - Yeah, this _seems_ to support my working hypothesis that you're talking about "rich" on a different level. Like, to have a nice house, nice things, and the ability to have nice meals, etc. That's one definition of rich. Another doesn't even need material wealth, it's about the richness of internal experience, stuff like that. If either of those are what you mean, then yeah, rich people aren't all evil. But billionaires? Or even those with tens of millions of dollars of personal wealth or more? In my opinion, the very fact that they allow themselves to be in that class of wealth while others starve is, inherently, an immoral act. So, while they may be perfectly nice people to their friends, or even to strangers, they're also still doing harm, just by allowing themselves to be (and remain) in that class of wealth. There _might_ be exceptions to this, and I'd be willing to hear your (or anyone's ) arguments, but........ yeah.
21:01 - I'd be curious to hear your take on Animal Flow. I also bet you'd get a kick out of The Hunger. Just two suggestions, though... do whatever Ren you like, and I'll likely come find it. :)

Money game 1 took 186 takes over 3 days in a friends basement, and it's something inane like fruit juice and olive oil that he pours over himself. They did try to do a live version of part 2 but Ren was not doing well and the take they decided to go with was missing half of its audio because of a technical error. So they released the lyric video instead.
Not sure what's happening with Kujo because Ren's disease has relapsed and he has to go back to Canada to receive treatment, which he said is going to knock him out for a while. Hopefully he'll have a team that behaves in his best interests this time around.

I don't believe in general that rich people only care about others only if it's their best interest to do so but I respect your opinion nonetheless. For me, it depends. I've noticed that the people who worked hard to earn the money they earned are way more generous. People who are given the money (say winning the lottery for example) are more greedy. Excuse my novel 😂 Butmy understanding of the Ren hating greed / rich folks thing ~ The central message from all three songs is that we all play a part in the money game, the massive systems of capitalism and wealth inequality may not change, neither will pointing blame, but if us as individuals could point the mirror at ourselves, we would realize we are also playing the game and responsible for the suffering it causes. I think Ren believes as do I that the suffering that is caused by inequality could be reduced if us as individuals became more aware of the systems in place and hopefully this became kinder to others, more generous and more judgemental of the flaws in our systems.
Though I think when Ren talks about the rich, I think he mostly means the ultra mega rich - these people in the money game bear more responsibility for the suffering of others than a regular person, a poor person or even a very wealthy person.
The richer you become, the more of an ethical dilemma it starts to become, not only because you are essentially hoarding money that you don't need, but also because by that point the means by which you make that money tend to become more and more ethically questionable. Jimmy is an example of this, parts of his story echo what happens all the time when people become mega wealthy.
Part 1: look at the system
Part 2: look how deep the system goes
Part 3: those who we demonize most are also victims of the system

@@Abigirl_Reacts Yeah, technically Eden came out before MG3, and it was the culmination (conclusion?) of the money game 'social experiment' leading up to the release of MG3, but to me Eden takes the whole thing to another level, beyond the individual or personal but utterly personal while kinda philosophical, mythological, historical and totally practical... A good idea to do them in order although it is not essential - look out for the way the "Rain, rain, rain, rain" hook is portrayed in Money Game 3.

He is super talented and has a lot of solo stuff too on his YT channel which I cannot recommend highly enough.

also I think its safe to say with examples like jimmy in part 3, thatwhile ren may dislike greed and the super rich as a monolith on an individual level he is capable of empathising and understanding that the system we have built causes these dark actions and people to arise and they dont exist in a vacuum. doesnt necessarily make up for the harm they may have caused but it does explain it and shows that thinks maybe could be different.

Ren certainly knows that not all rich people are bad people, he's generalising in a few song lyrics, not writing a thesis. His over-reaching theme in the 3 MG songs is greed. Whether he's referencing clearing rain forests or running for president, there is plenty of examples of money driving corruption. It's quite telling in MG1 where polarising the people, getting people to hate on immigrants, is a tactic to achieve high office. "They're eating the dogs, there eating the cats" springs to mind. Enjoyed you reacting to these, looking forward to you covering MG3.

Of course not all rich people are bad. Ren isn't going against the rich but against capitalism, against greed. We all abuse the system as much as we can, are parasitic. He says the whole time not to blame each other.
That's why the order is important again. Part 1 is the relativation for the disstrack against our greedy nature in part 2 and part 3 explains how everybody can become in the situation the others blame for being greedy.

There's a huge difference between being successfully well off and being rich. I've done well in my life. I'm 55 and mostly retired because I don't need to earn any more to live. I still work because my main hobby is writing computer software, and if I sometimes monetise what I write. It pays for me to go to gigs and festivals and allows me to be gernerous to my friends.
But that's the point. I have all I need and I've done it without exploiting others. I started out with next to nothing and got where I am by being good at what I do and working hard. The people Ren is talking about were mostly born with all they needed, and spent their lives exploiting others so they had even more. We're supposed to respect them and act as if they've added value to the World but they haven't. The World would be better off if they didn't exist. Why should we respect them?

    • @Abigirl_Reacts
      @Abigirl_Reacts  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agreed with everything you said until the last part. Mostly cause you generalized a whole group (those born into wealth) and wished they didn't exist lol you don't need to respect them, that's fine. But someone in their family worked hard to gain his family's earnings. How he did it is unknown, we can't assume every single one did it through exploitation, although I'm sure some did.

    • @gerardpeterbrennan
      @gerardpeterbrennan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think you misunderstand somewhat. You are right, simply being born into wealth is not necessarily a problem. There are some who act honorably, pay their taxes and use their wealth to help others. Those are fine and I have no problem with them. They are very rare though, and for the most part we don't hear about them. The vast majority, and certainly those who are in the news all the time, exploit people, dodge taxes, and generally act dishonorably, adding no value to the world but expecting us to look up to them. Those I have a problem with.

It not all about ** money ** but it is a common frame mind set..
Pt 1> is a general outlook on the 'games' everyone plays Ren is in dark clothing representing the darker side of thing.
Romain Axisa (hooded person) representing the innocence -- that could be just about anyone/ any thing and until the problem has a face (the eyes being drawn on) The dark side run the show. Once the innocence *sees* what the dark side is doing > the dark side destroys itself
    P t 2> is cooperate/ capitalism aspect
Pt 3> Is personal/ generational .. being **groomed**
I know it is spelled out RAIN --- but if you think of the homophone reign being raise (pt 3) it a cycle (back to pt 1)
