  • Mercedes Benz 608D LF8 Fire Engine Camper Van Conversion | Feuerwehr | VanLife UK and Europe
    In 2017 I took a bike ride from Düsselfdorf along the Rhine, on the way I found a Mercedes Benz fire engine in a park up. At the end of the summer I travelled back to Germany to collect a Mercedes Benz Fire Engine to convert in to a camper.
    The initial project took six months to complete, turning a working fire engine into a family camper, a basic conversion but a working one none the less. During the conversion I made some rough videos that explained what what was going on, these videos form the basis of the film that I introduce here.
    This film takes me from a trip to Kempen, Germany, to collect the Mercedes Benz 608D Ziegler LF8, a drive across Holland to the ferry at Hoek van Holland and back to the UK to Hundon and the workshop, this is where the work took place.
    Forget what you might have seen on the TV, this one works well. If you see it come and say hello, take a look around and hop in.
    The first MOT and registration was completed by the end or March 2018 and the Fire Engine Camper Van took to the road at the beginning of many adventures, and may more to come. We have been to France and Holland many times, Belgium and Germany too as well as a few trips around the UK.
    When I collect the Düdo it had 19,000kms on the tacho, now it is reading 29,500 or so, over 10,000kms in two years, here comes year three.
    Enjoy the video.

    Hello Glenn, marvelous work! Could you tell me what the burner's type/brand is? I also saw it in another camper van and like it a lot. Are you satisfied with it's performance? Thanks for answering this! 20:40~

      Hi, that is a SMEV PI909, I think there is a modern version of that one now, works great, no complaints about it, easy to keep clean.

    How well does it perform off-road ?

    • @GlennJobson
      @GlennJobson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, off road, if it dry and rocky it is fine, if it is wet and slippery, always gets stuck. I would like to change the twin rear wheels for larger, wider single wheels but I can't find the right tyres yet.

    Hi Glenn, Thanks for the videos, really enjoying them and giving me lots of ideas. How did you get it back from Germany ? I've just purchased something similar and am having trouble finding insurance to drive it back whilst it is on German plates.

    • @GlennJobson
      @GlennJobson  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I drove it back. When you arrange the export plates, that you have to have, you have an option for 3,5 or 28 days I think, I have always taken the longest option and then you add temporary insurance to cover that period, typically for 28 days third party cover and the export plates I have paid around 100€, then you have to pay road tax for the month but the German town hall will bill you for that later. You don't and probably can't buy insurance in the UK to cover you for this as most policies will exclude vehicles that are outside of the UK.
      Does that help?

    • @danielnorth6817
      @danielnorth6817 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GlennJobson yes thanks Glenn, I'd hit a wall with UK insurers, the 5 day German 'Yellow' plates that the vendor is arranging should include insurance, but the vendor doesn't think it does. I'll keep trying with them.

    • @GlennJobson
      @GlennJobson  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielnorth6817 Just go for the Red ones, they will include the insurance for export, the yellow ones are 5 day plates for German use I think. If you drive from Germany to the UK on yellow plates you might get stopped along the way, they are not for that.

    Great van!! What is the weight of your van before and after conversion ( it means under 3500 kgs or more )?? We are looking for similar van to make campervan and want to get under 3,5 tones after reconstruction. We are afraid that with van up 3,5 tones we will have more limits on road and visiting towns and cities. Sorry about not good English but i hope you understand what we are asking. Thank you!

    • @GlennJobson
      @GlennJobson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, English is OK. This is a 6.5 tonne van, probably needed to be to carry the fire equipment, once I took it all out the van was about 2.6 tonne empty, it could be made to be under 3.5 tonne IF you reregister the vehicle as a motor caravan and provide proof of the 'new' weight limits. That would mean you could drive it without a C1 category EU licence too. My advice is to weight the van before you build the interior and then you will know how much you can put in it. It will never look overweight on the road anyway as it will have the springs for 6.5 tonnes on it. That works in the UK but not sure where else. Thanks for the comment!

    • @moyasimya630
      @moyasimya630 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GlennJobson Thank u for answere! 2.6 tonne sounds good for me. Yes , i want to register as motor caravan. C1 category is not problem for me , but vehicle with up3.5 tonne has much more limits as for "usual" cars. Primarily I mean traffic signs forbidding traffic in cities. At least here in Ukraine. What about UK and Europe?

    • @GlennJobson
      @GlennJobson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The weight of the truck can be a problem BUT I know how much is weighs so can judge for myself. Town and City driving can be limited, in Germany I have a Green Zone Sticker so can go anywhere except 3.5T limited roads. The UK, there are a lot of 3.5T limits but mostly out of towns on older roads and small bridges. France has some limits here and there but that is usually a little higher weight. The length with a bike rack on makes it 7.5m and that is also a fun problem in small places.

    Bubble foil isn't insulation, can be used as a vapour barrier but is nowhere near insulation bud.

    • @GlennJobson
      @GlennJobson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for taking the time to comment but I have to disagree, not all bubble foil is insulation but this stuff is as works very well, linked here. Not sure why anyone ever bothers with a vapor barrier in a van in a temperate climate though, seems pointless to seal yourself in with the moisture. @@GlennJobson The U value is only 0.35 (maximum) which calculates as 2.85 R value of the Yuzet Double Aluminium Bubble Insulation Foil you've used, basically it's 2 pieces of millimetre thin foil with air in the bubbles. You'd probably get a higher insulation rating from the boards you've put on top it than the foil itself. As for the moisture issue, that's why you have roof vents etc to let moisture out whilst keeping it away from anything else.
