Talking with people via Apple Translate - App Review

  • Apple introduced the Translator app in iOS 14. The main outstanding feature is the offline communication mode. You can talk in your native language and your friend will answer in their native language. Using one device. No internet connection required.
    I've asked my friends to test it in English, French, Italian, Japanese and Russian.

    Translate app can also function as a good Voice-to-Text app for hard-of-hearing and deaf users. It seem to work better than other Voice-to-Text apps I've tested.

      That’s amazing. If you have an Apple iPhone in the actual Apple settings you can have your phone to do. Voice to text works very well. I’ve been using it for years, you can also get your iPhone to read text on your screen out loud and also in photos.

    What is needed is to have a translator for each of the languages listed with in the phone's language. Example: Thai which is NOT listed in the "Translator" App but is listed in the phones languages section.

    The app seems quite usable. But I think point to the menu and say “this, this, this and this. Thank you” is much more faster unless you have some special requests🤣
    Perhaps I will use it when I’m at the shop or asking for the directions on the street.

    Does the translate app interface with game apps? Many apps have people speaking in the chat in their native language. The game app has a translate option which is broken. I just assumed that the translate option in the game is using a translate app to translate.

    I just bought the iPhone Apple SP 2020. Will it work for offline on that too? This is amazing. I could have penpal friends from all over the world and now being able to talk to them using the Translation App hopefully. I don't know if I have iOS 14 or iOS 13. Does that matter? Thanks for this fine video. Cheers.

    So let’s say the other person don’t have an iPhone. Do I have to manually switch the language back and forth. Like I speak English then I go to Mexico and I have it set to English to Spanish. But when they answer do I have to put Spanish to English? Because when I try to speak Spanish it just translate to Spanish. But then again I speak very little and my accent is not good so sometimes it doesn’t understand me.

    • @GeeksTable
      @GeeksTable  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the communication mode you have a pair of languages. And once you or the other person starts speaking, the translator identifies the language automatically. But of course you have to setup the languages manually first.

    Nuances get easily lost, so what you actually said, can easily have its meaning changed and be unintelligible or misunderstood. It will only work for simple phrases reliably, it does not work for complex and nuanced language. Sentences need to be short and basic information can be conveyed. It does not work for complex communication yet

    • @EYes-zy6my
      @EYes-zy6my ปีที่แล้ว

      “True”…Linguistics is astonishingly complex.. Always in flux..Few people realize this..
      Language/communication changes by region, Mood, Time and even by recipient.. So much is at play when conveying ideas..Body language, cadence, inflection can mean all the difference..
      But we gotta start somewhere😉🤙🏻

    • @GeeksTable

      There is a setting that you may tick. When it’s checked the app automatically identifies which of two languages you’re talking and translates to the other one. Otherwise you’ll have to specify it manually.
