I have also used plastic milk crates under my totes because I had trouble finding chairs. They work PERFECTLY!

I actually am growing corn in a tote. I have about 5 plants in there and they are thriving!! One has an ear of corn already. Everyone was laughing at me but not laughing now 😁 I have tote corn 😊🤘

I am growing sweet corn in a container too 😀 I plant them early in June and they are going really good , i suppose...I have six in there! Sweet tote corn will be great! 😝
I planted two totes with baby corn, Tom Thumb peas and Patty Pan squash. I dropped the corn in the same hole with each pea. Three rows of three corn & 2 Patty Pan in each tote. No germination of peas in one but six peas germinated in the other. Corn was twice as big where Tom Thumb peas grew. No harvest yet though. 🌹

I ordered some red runner bean seeds. When I went to plant them, I had 4 seeds in the package. I planted all 4 and only 2 germinated. So I have 2 runner beans growing with hopes of getting some seeds for next year. I'm really taking care of those 2 plants. I put up more shade clothe today, Needed it for all the TX heat.
Im growing in containers on my balcony. Most successful zucchini ( ive had it outside one month and already harvested 3), cherry tomatoes , and butternut squash. All have given me tons of crop all ready and easy to grow. Im in missouri and even in the high heat this year these have been great. My least successful so far cucumbers and large tomatoes both picky on the soil.

Last year, I had a volunteer Texas stripe watermelon and got five nice melons from it. I saved the seeds and have three vines growing. I save seeds from any vegetables that I’ve bought at the store and plant them. It’s already something I like and they’re free.
For those who do not have much freezer space, these vegetables can also be dehydrated with an affordable countertop dehydrator, popped into a mason jar with a moisture packet and then stored using no electricity. So if the power goes out (rolling blackouts) all the food is still good.

I’m glad you said that about getting seeds from the zucchini by letting it set and continue to ripen. I have one that’s pretty big I was going to make boats out of, but I’d rather have the seeds!

I was delighted to find seeds that I saved last winter from some candy cane peppers. I tossed them in a tote, and they came up! I don't know if the plants will also be varigated, but I am excited to find out! Little pepper plants grow peppers really fast, so hopefully I will get some. 😊 Also, hopefully they bred true... 😮

But I can't find all the varieties, its difficult 🤔 Here in Greece I can't find walking Egyptian onions...I have to get them from another country, but they are expensive 😐 but I started growing exactly what you suggested early in June 🤗 We like the same vegetables! Until now they're going really good everything I have planted, my green beans, my lettuce ( i have them in plastic bottles , hung them with wire on the railings of the balcony and give them the shade whenever the sun is full), my corns, my cheery tomatoes, my peppers, my green onions ( i cook green onions and eat them a lot)...
I had some failures but I have learned from them in the past years...

I am a Christian orthodox, and do you know what our saints have said? That all the bad things will happen because man will not have love for the trees and nature. And that have said it 2000 years ago when the earth was giving everything to everyone.... So this must be a lesson for our kids, to love and respect everything around them, even earthworms!!!! Cause if they do that the earth can feed them and get them alive. And our ancients were saying "healthy mind in a healthy body". So we have to heal our souls first so our health could be better! And gardering our own food, believe that, it's helping in so much ways!!!!

Hi Robbie, great video, thanks. I sure wish I had your weather... my beautiful zucchini plants are green and blooming. BUT, every other day we hit 103-110 I swear and it's so hard on the 'fruit'. They wither and fall off. I'm hoping to keep the plants alive until it cools off a bit and maybe I will get some zucchini to enjoy. I'm ordering okra seeds (love them) and I received the red runner bean seeds. Those have been planted at the base of a mesquite and I'll let them climb up in partial shade.My walking onions don't mind our weather and grow really well. Red chard and kale do well in the heat thank goodness. Sure love working in the gardens and getting ideas from you. My birds appreciate you too! I'm growing finch seeds everywhere and it's bringing in new wild birds. Fun!
I grow mostly pepper varieties with a few tomatoes for sauces. This year I’ve added cucumbers, zucchini and eggplants too.

Probably have you ever grown center cut squash it has other names it’s very similar to zucchini not quite as watery kind of creamy actually. I was out picking some and I started counting to see how many more were coming and I quit counting at 15 or 16 and this is on three plants in a hill maybe four.

Hey Robbie! I'm not a gardener - recently found you with your hummingbird fountain video. Your 5 gallon bucket set-up had me saying, "Oh! That's interesting!"
I would add butternut squash to the list. It's super easy to grow, stores a long time, and is high in nutrition. Also potatoes, and sweet potatoes, but those can be a little more finicky.

Me too - about the Scarlett Runner beans. What I discovered is that in mild climates, the roots will over winter and send up climbers for next season.. They will regrow 2 or 3 seasons or more. . . unlike other beans which are only annual. Of course they will also start from saved seeds - and stay true. Love my walking onions too. My list would add Red Russian Kale. . . i've got great success with them and they give greens all winter in my climate. (But I'm in a mild climate - no snow).
Black eyed peas work great in Texas. Buy your seeds in the dried beans in the grocery store.

I’ve got a purple tree collard with tiny leaves starting, purple sprouting broccoli seedlings coming up, I hope it’s not to hot for them now, I live in Mount Shasta, CA, zone 7b. I’ve got tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers starting to get flowers. First time I have ever grown or eaten collard! Mostly I just eat it off the plant, but have put it in my eggs, too. I grow in totes and buckets. I use tulle and just made my fist placemat cover. I also love the birds and have made a few of your fountains. I feed the hummers, too. Lol I believe I now qualify as a Robbie and Gary groupie! 💖
I was just at Shasta Lake driving through stopped for night, visited the dam and was sad to see how low the Lake has gotten. We were told it had dropped a foot from day before. Our state is so hot and dry it makes growing difficult in So Cal where I am. I love watching Robbie since she’s in a similar environment and battles similar challenges successfully. I’m challenged by squirrels most of all but actually like the critters so the Tulle has been a great solution as it doesn’t hurt anything and still lets sun and water through. But I haven’t figured out how to keep them from eating my cucumbers and beans. How do you protect your climbing vine plants from the squirrels? If you have any solutions I’d love to know. Wishing you rain!
I'm growing 4 of those 5. Lol instead of beans I did radishes and carrots. Also a ton of herbs because they're so expensive to buy. Keep it green!

I used to grow zucchinis without giving them a second thought then for the last three years I've had big fails. The plants and fruits start out wonderfully well, I make sure that the soil is nutritious (or is it?) there are plenty of bees around if not I do the pollinating bit only to have the fruits turn yellow at the tips then shrivel up and die. I just turned 74 (yikes!) so I don't have many more summers to play around so with so any suggestions would be most welcome.
And the cabbage white butterflies are driving me nuts!
Cover them with ag fabric or tulle and the moths can't get to them. You can hand pollinate your zucchini. I just did my first yellow squash and have about 3 more females to do tomorrow
If you can get a small two system set up with your zucchinis I’m telling you it will make a difference and will continue to grow. I think what might be happening is they’re pulling all the nutrients out before the fruit is produced fully. I have some other thoughts but I haven’t posted them yet. But try a two system set up ( easy ) check out that video and I think that will work great for you. I’m doing that right now on my deck and I can’t believe how massive the zucchini plant is because of the two system let me know how it works. If it doesn’t I have another idea. ❤️💕😊🌱
Try some peppermint spray on your plants. Search it on TH-cam to find the recipe and other applications.
Let me know if you can set up a 2 system compost in place, and I will personally tell you what to put in it…

As a newbie with a tiny yard this was fascinating. However, to be honest, I had no idea about much of what you talked about. Maybe you can show us your freezing process, even the growing process as to how to harvest, collecting seeds, propagating, etc. That would be super informative!

micropore medical tape (stretchy thin medical tape) - you can tape it around the base vines of the plant to protect from the squash vine borer. something to try!!

I I have so many questions for you! lol I have two totes ready ALREADY using your layering method. Bought nothing but the two totes. I had everything I needed right here. Who knew! I did even buy potting soil, maybe I should, you tell me, but I had veggies growing in huge planter pots last year and left everything in them when the season was over. Well, it all broke down and when I started digging in there for native soil I was like hey, this is beautiful black soil so I used it on top. Now to plant. Of course I’m going to grow zucchini, hopefully I’m not too late and I’m hoping to still find tomatoes. I would like to grow beans and onions but am wondering if I’m too late. If I get tomatoes growing how do I save the seeds for next year? I want my grandkids to be able to grow food and they are all here with me now so I plan to get them all involved. I tend to lean towards the idea that we can not COUNT on things being available to us for many reasons cost not the least. Why aren't radishes discussed more? They are so versatile. You can steam them and roast them like potatoes, too. It takes away the bite that a lot of people don't like. The greens are super healthy and nutritious, and they grow so fast. In a small container. Some varieties can be harvested in a month or something. When it comes to survival gardening, I personally love growing a variety of radishes. Thanks for showing us your awesome container garden :)

I mention your name so much when I'm talking to my boyfriend about my vegetables, "Robbie says that....." LOL that he teases me. I don't care cause everytime I watch you I learn something new or you refresh my memory and instill that knowledge into my thick skull. Today you taught me more about all the romaine, buttercrunch, loose leaf lettuces and spinach I've got started. Some for cut and come again and some planted by themselves. I learned they will stay little in trays, dishpans and won't bolt that way. I'm using milk jugs I've got hanging on a wooden dowel of sorts, wooden pallet leaning against the side of the house and assorted laundry and swifter containers. I've watched you transplant them too. My spinach may have a harder time growing here in 10a but I'm too new to know better yet and too happy to care lol. Been saving rain water too since it's rainy season. I found a place in southern California for that tree collards you talk about so fondly. All I have right now is many huge elephant ear plants. I'm composting its dying leaves. I worry that that isn't enough or the right nutrients like kale would be. As I rattle on here, I realize that all I wanted to say is thank you and I hope you know that we love you, our teacher, our mentor. Thank you for the knowledge and joy you bring.
I made a broccoli salad for dinner yesterday and used a bunch of my campari tomatoes. I would have paid at least 7 dollars at the store. The seeds were free from grocery store toms last fall and it is still producing.
Lots of great info. I'm excited about using totes to grow in. The ground here is so hard and mostly clay so we have to add alot to it. I could just put that soil in a tote and not kill myself trying to amend the clay.
Great video Robbie. I find the biggest bang for the buck is Swiss chard. It’s is nutritious, cut and come again, and will produce until the snow comes.
My chard, bless it, grows 12 months and doesn't mind the snow.

I keep getting blossom end rot on my san marzanos I have growing in a container, any thoughts on how to prevent this?
You may need to supplement with Calcium and Magnesium. Finely ground up egg shells may help or a cal/mag fertilizer. Hope this helps. 😊

I grew 5 tomato plants I purchased at lowes and they grew big and gave me one tomoato never ever had such failure with tomatos

I wonder if we shouldn't start buying seeds NOW for next year. I am following your example and I grow my veggies in pots. I have never doubled up the pots before but I am trying that out this year.
If you already have seeds, you're good for years. I only buy seeds every 5 or 10 years. I do save seeds every season though, so I usually have plenty of seeds. Even when I think I am low, such as with peas this year, a hunt through my stash turned up a bunch more peas to sow and more for next year. And of course, I saved some from this year's peas.
Can you grow cucumber cuttings in water too or just tomatoes?
Question for anyone who knows. I have worm castings. Can I soak in water and use the water as fertilizer for my plants?
yes, this would be making it into a "tea". This method is often done with fresh manure that is too hot to put on plants right away. But this is not needed for worm castings - they will not burn plants. The only benefits of doing this with worm castings would be the tea would be easier and faster for the plant to absorb. And if you only have a small amount of worm castings, making tea would stretch how many plants you can treat. I doubt you need to dilute the worm castings tea. Hope this helps.

Hello Robbie. I Love all 5 that you mentioned. and we are growing Romaine lettuce and cherry tomatoes, green beans and Zucchini. all our favorites. We plant red scarlet beans for years for the hummingbirds also. i have not put tomatoes in the freezer as of yet. These are all excellent choices. Crazy prices in the grocery stores for sure. My Husband makes a delicious soup with Zucchini ,Tomatoes,green beans, Onions and fresh garlic a few potatoes & ground beef adds cumin tomato paste from the tube not to much. beef bullion It is so delicious. Hello Robbie, love your videos and information. You have a greater advantage of growing year round. Do you ever grow anything indoors ? Here in the Northeast OH/MI area there is nothing that can be planted outside when the temperature is 12° and ground frozen ! Did container gardening this year since the temps have been hot and my raised bed uses lots of water versus containers.

I started gardening in July of 2023 I bought worm castings for $15 for a big bag today that same size bag is $25 it’s only March not even a yr later. I do have a worm farm but I have been composting in place feeding other plants now thanks to your inspiration❤😁

As Plan A I have a well-stocked emergency pantry which will buy us time to prepare Plan B. Plant potatoes, rainbow carrots, onions, black beans, peanuts, lettuce, and cherry tomatoes. You know I haven’t got one red yet ☹️my tomatoes are All in the containers in the sun , I used dirt compost with manure 🤷🏼♀️in the bottom all leaves and my kitchen scraps! Learn from you but we in MN don’t have your weather , some hot weather not too many 😏water every day if it is dry and didn’t rain 🌧. I really don’t understand why I don’t have that much of any thing , my beans are all grown green but no flower yet😞
Maybe, I'm uninformed, but it seems expensive to grow vegetables. By the time I buy the seeds or plants, pots, soil, a fertilizer, and water. I can see doing it for health reasons, but I can't afford to buy all the items and watch the plants die. I'm barely making ends meet.

I have tried to grow red runner beans - it didn't go well. For some reason, beans are a challenge. I can grow tomatoes like crazy though! I try squash every year, last year was the worst. It's pest pressure that takes them out. So far, fingers triple crossed, this year I might actually have some success. Thank you Robbie for all the wonderful information. Funny note - my husband saw me watching one of your videos and said - hey, that looks like our backyard, only smaller! LOL

hello. with the totes should I be concerned with them being bpa free or food safe for organic growing?
