    Thanks for covering this when it seems that nobody else wants to talk about it. I've seen a lot of these crashes in recent years (videos all over TH-cam) so hopefully a better solution can be found. This is what happened to Jason Leffler and that was 10 years ago now.

      Leffler's crash was at Bridgeport Speedway. The two crashes were similar in the way that the car pivoted around itself and hit the wall driver side first. We can NEVER assume racing is totally safe. Good job on covering this incident Justin.

    I was at the race Tuesday night. I didn't see what happened, but we heard the impact. I'm glad he's ok, but I wish they would have said something over the speakers sooner rather than later. There were people around us saying it didn't look good due to the time from the accident occurred until the fire trucks and 2nd ambulance had arrived. I know they probably couldn't have said much, but something would have been better than nothing.

    Great peice , I lost a freind in 1979 in a sprint car crash. Now thinking back nothing changed. Safety wasnt a hot button issue back then. Now with the advent of the internet and social media the subject is readly discussed the moment things go wrong.

    Great show as always Justin. I love these deep dive episodes into racing knowledge that are hard to find elsewhere.
    If you have another slow news day one week could you do a little explanation on tracks taking rubber and why promoters/track owners don't want announcers to call attention to it? From what I know it's not really something they have control over and sometimes it just happens to even the best prepared tracks. I remember you saying on an episode how announcers try to ignore it and pretend like they don't see it, even though it's obvious to anybody watching. Asking because I noticed an announcer mention it the other day during a race and it kinda surprised me to hear. Is there more things they can do to keep a track from taking rubber? Do cheaper dirts take rubber easier where more expensive material doesn't (clay or something like that?) Is this just a promoter trying to keep a track owner happy? Do they think people will stop giving them money to go to races/watch online if tracks are taking rubber during their shows and the races aren't as exciting?
    Would love to know more about what goes into track prep in general if you have any insider sources to get info from for a segment on it. Especially with all the rainouts and weather problems we've been having lately. I feel like the workers who prep tracks each week are the unsung heroes of dirt racing but without fail they'll get shit on (sometimes valid, sometimes unwarranted) second there's any issue with the surface (ruts/holes, too dusty and not enough water, too wet and too much water, only one lane, no top groove, not enough passing, too much track work, not enough track work, etc.)...

    Great Video. Thanks for digging into the details on this. Glad Jake is improving. If I understand correctly, if the torsion bar snaps, none of the retainer systems will keep the torsion bar from walking out of the tube. Maybe the torsion bar snapped? This would be similar to the "C" clip retainers on rear drive axles. If the axle breaks, the axle is free to fly out of the rear end.

    Use to crew for a friend of mine in the 80s. He had a stop break on his car in turn 3 at Atomic Speedway before there was a wall there. It sent him flipping down off the track. When they break bad stuff happens.

    Torsion bars can just break, IMO the ends where they connect to the stops and/or arm would b the weakest points. So no one may b at fault or irresponsible, sometimes shtuff just happens. Very glad he is going to survive this!

    I sometimes bristle at the Safety First mantra. If I lean up against the wall, I will be maintaining 3 points of contact but also getting nothing done. If nobody moves, nobody gets hurt. But that comes from years of working in a giant corporation where CYA is the order of business.
    I do agree that a better job can be done by the tracks, racers, and tech officials. We have a couple asphalt tracks around where if you get into the wall, you will be launched in the air. Luckily no one has been killed. Yet. So we (the community) could at least tackle the obvious things. Make sure your fire suit is clean, don't have retaining walls that act like ramps, check a rollcage tube now and then. The unusual or unexpected will never be eliminated, but we could keep it to a dullish roar.

    That is pretty crazy that his torsion bar came out like that. I mean I can see it but it wouldn't havedl been the first thing I imagined was the cause. Glad he is okay and maybe they need to add a strap or a breach block of sorts.

    What is with the people who want crash videos removed? They need to stop being so sensitive and accept the reality that the crash has happened and there is information to be gained from analyzing these videos. Torgerson or Neuman, and even Owens can help improve safety, there is no benefit to censorship, don’t watch if you don’t want to but it’s not up to you to decide what other people watch

      The public isn't going to improve safety by watching a video of someone dieing. They can keep the videos private and leave them for some actual experts if you want to talk about analyzing. Families don't want videos of the relatives' death out there for entertainment.

    • @kylen82
      @kylen82 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zacknelson6630 the actual video we are commenting features a knowledgeable person with industry connections and he gives a breakdown of what caused the accident, there is absolutely benefit to be gained by people learning about safety. The video shouldn’t be censored based on the injuries of the crash, the driver and family all agree to the risk that comes with racing. It’s not up to me or you to decide what people watch and what their motivations are

    Should be threaded rod with locknut.......also should have same thing with a cable on rear axle to keep from losing wheel with sheared off axle.....but then Noone could use their swindell bleeders

    • @dylancold23
      @dylancold23 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree with the rear axle part. Keeping the axle/and or wheel with that car is a bad idea. The wheel/axle would be slinging around during a wreck and it could sling into the Cock pit.
