Some TH-cam reviewers complain about all setting going through the infotainment screen but that could not be further from reality. Most of the important settings are physical buttons including ride (normal, comfort, sport, baja), steering, even exhaust sound (quiet, sport, baja), off-road settings, etc. And once you get it the way you like it you can long hold the Raptor button and it saves ALL the settings. Next time you get in the truck just double tap the Raptor button on the steering wheel and it applies your settings. The ride is very comfortable. I just got it 5 days ago so I can't yet comment on its off road worthiness but based on videos like this one it should be a blast to take dirt roading or rock climbing (which I do not plan on doing).
I think a nice ZR2 can be had for around 50k, I think the Bison package adds almost 12k to the price. The Ranger Raptor is around 57k with almost everything you would want (I don't know about dealer markups). The Tacomas are overpriced for what you get. The TRD Pro starts around 64k. Toyota is pretty much taking your added resale value upfront for themselves. Since most people spend 98-100% of their time on road, I would like to see how these ride and handle on the street. On road performance would probably be the deciding factor for me.
@@saywhatnow57 A Tacoma Off Road with the standard features the Raptor and ZR2 come with, would require the $8800 Premium package, and it still won't compete head to head with them. The 64k TRD Pro would be the equivalent trim level of the ZR2 and Raptor.

The last generation got more metal underneath, the current one has more plastic shielding. I hope sales drop or are no where near what they expect and they’ll have to start incentivizing it a lot more.
The weight of a 5 7 frame also comes into play while seating in the back or front of the Bison. Plenty of room for me at 5 7 and 160 lbs. Chevy all day for me !
Raptor for the win! All are really great trucks but all are also ridiculously priced and will struggle in sales as you can easily get a full-size 1/2 ton for same or maybe less
Haven't own a Ford for 30 years but I really like the Ranger Raptor. V6!! Coil-springs! Price! I am losing faith in the Tacoma due to Tundra engines having to be replaced. Credit to Toyota for standing behind there trucks for repair. Would pick the Bison if it had a V6.
The bottom line is power; the Toyota and Chevy are nice but I own a 24 Ranger Raptor, I have driven all 3. I like how easy Chevy makes it to engage the front and rear lock, I like that Toyota makes a manual 6 speed but the deciding factor is power and speed because that is what you are paying for. In that area there is no comparison, the RR destroys them, I know for a fact. It’s a Baja Ferrari.
Tacomas are sitting on dealerships lots. Way too expensive and back seat is very tight. The other 2 trucks have way more power and back seats are more useable
Backseat on these trucks are all a joke. I dont care what people say. No midsize is adult friendly in the back 😂. As for power the trd offroad is mid trim level. Not even the most powerful available like the other two which are both top spec engines7k
I burst out laughing when I watched Toyota engineers show the TRD Pro and those seat shocks were taking up all the leg room so he had to kind of tuck his legs awkwardly around them.
It had more ground clearance than a highway overpass. It probably needs a good running board setup and some grab handles. Annoying when GM omits them when they definitely sell the grab handle part for the truck. It's probably in some stupid overpriced package.
Ford Ranger Raptor 2024, I just got one in Black color, more leg room, $10,000.00 less than Tacoma, better looking exterior and interior and please a V6 405 horsepower, as a former Tacoma 2014 owner, the Raptor is a better Truck. Chevy has a 2.7 with same fuel economy, meaning a heavier truck with less power, the bison has that tire in the bed awful.
I think the best bang for the buck is get a "regular" ZR2 (like my loaded w/moonroof 2024) and put 285/75/17's (34's) on it so the spare fits under the bed, and if that's not enough, get maybe a 2" lift, get aluminum skidplates for the gas tank and rear diff. That'll basically make it equal to the Bison at a fraction of the cost, AND you don't have to waste space in the bed for the spare. You'll never miss that 1/2" of extra clearance you'd get with the 35's and unless you're racing, you won't miss those jounce dampers. I found the suspension to be amazing when I was ripping around the Valley of The Gods in Moab about a month ago! Just floating along, I even caught some air over a rise and it never felt close to bottoming. It was a blast! The $12k price difference (more expensive than the Raptor!) without an engine upgrade and the spare in the bed are the showstoppers for me. Love my "regular" ZR2 though!
Does the charger work in the taco? It doesn't in the tundra or ranger raptor. The AT4X canyon charger works without over heating depending where you set the phone but connection issues so you use a cable anyway. Ranger raptor if you put the truck into haul mode it selects 4A. Just found that out today moving my trailer
Good to see the back seats in these midsize trucks work for someone. I would have to get the GMC ATX4 and remove the worthless rear seat package in any of these.
For the mid size trucks if they needed stay the same overall length, should they sacrifice more bed length and give that to rear leg room? 3-6" sacrifice, I wonder if that would be a tradeoff people would accept.
I’ll stick with my 1st gen TRD-OffRoad double cab Tacoma. It’s way more capable Off Road than all three of those trucks especially with the upgraded aftermarket parts I added but I will admit they have my truck beat with mpg and street driving but I didn’t buy my truck for the streets that’s what my car is for.😂
The TRD Pro would be a better matchup with the Raptor and ZR2 but Toyota's insane pricing kind of breaks the comparison. $64k is insane. $22k more than the price of a 3rd gen TRD Pro when it launched in 2017.
Agree … even the TRD Pro looks anemic compared to these two. Other videos of the TRD Pro show that … really terrible exterior design from Toyota IMO; way too notchy & aesthetically awkward.
For the price and me not being in love with the size of those trucks I’d save money and get an Outback wilderness and do the things they just did honestly
Not a mid size truck, however, not that Toyota just released this massive recall on the Tundra I have lost faith that any manufacturer builds reliable vehicles. And now, we gotta deal with these prices?? Smh
It was a terrible idea to make the Tundra and Tacoma share a platform. Too many compromises to make it work. The 3rd gen Tundra's bed is tiny compared to the 2nd gen and the Tacoma grew in size but feels cramped in the back seat and the factory ground clearance/approach angles don't look great compared to the 3rd gen Taco.
I'd say none of them. I'd go with the Colorado Trail Boss for $40K then add a 1" lift and 33" tires. Just not sure about the auto locking diff. in sand.
@ 3:11, awhh the company, the tone, the inflection of the voice "dude", such a great relaxing trip that seemed? Careful bud, you could wreck your truck at the 2 - 3mph you were moving but worst of all you could tear that leash she's got you under if you talk back.
ZR2 for styling and suspension. Ford for its drivetrain and seats. Toyota for it's practicality :-) Combine those 3 and you would have the perfect mid-size truck!! GM, please give us better seats and a more special drivetrain!! I bet if they put the 6.2L V8 in it , that would be the answer 😁
4x4 system the Tacoma is better seen all the test on TFL and other youtuber. However, when you add front lockers the Raptor takes it. There are pros and cons to each truck. If I had to say for all around performance, raptors hands down especially for baja. For resale and reliability plus just climbing 4x4 basic use. Tacoma Looks ZR2
I don't think after watching tons of reviews the Ranger Raptor really has any real overall competition. It's like do you want the best or something different
Okay, the Bison is a great looking truck but for $63,000 to more than $66,000 depending on spec what do you really get over the base ZR2? Unlike the Raptor which gives you an engine you can't get in any other Ranger at least right now the Bison has the same engine that comes standard in the ZR2. Although a Chevy engineer at the Johnson Valley Chevy event did say the shocks were re-tuned for the added weight of the wheels and added accessories he also said the springs were the same as on the ZR2 which is why they used the Multimatic jounce control stops as secondary dampers. The Raptor at least has a unique suspension and the TRD Pro will as well. As pointed out in the video the Bison only has 1001 pounds of payload. This will be fine for ninety eight percent of buyers for any of these trucks as they are almost all going to do little more than pick up the occasional bag of mulch at Home Depot and drive it to the back yard flower bed. But for someone actually planning to off road and camp 1000 pounds is cutting it pretty thin. Not to mention there's a spare tire taking up part of the little bed space you have in these crew cab short beds. AEV also makes their own version of the Bison in which they re-gear to 4.10's for the larger and heavier BF Goodrich tires they put on it and they add tie rod stiffeners so you don't twist the stock ones up while trying to turn and climb at the same time. The Chevy version does not have upgraded tie rods and comes with the same 3.42 gears every other Colorado gets. In addition to this the actual AEV version comes with all the same things as the Chevy version and all for $11,999. Chevy's Bison package comes in at $11,700. So for just $299 more you get a stronger truck with better gearing. No word on the payload but seeing as they don't list doing much of anything with the rest of the truck I guess it would be roughly the same. The base ZR2 for right around 50K is the bargain off road midsize truck you want. The Ranger Raptor is actually the best overall performance value considering the unique engine for the price. People have no idea what they are talking about with the ZR2 and the Raptor being desert runners and not tough off roaders. Wheel travel, low end and slow speed control, lockers, overall clearances as well as armor make any truck a tough off roader. Watch any Australian Ranger Raptor video. It never takes a back seat to any brand in any situation. The Bison is a ZR2 with after market skids and a leveling kit. Literally. So why wouldn't the ZR2 equal the Bison? The Tacoma TRD Off Road is the best value Toyota off roader and will be more than enough for most people. But, Tim, seriously, stop with the resale and reliability thing with Toyota. We don't know if the Tacoma will be reliable. The new Tundra certainly hasn't been. Resale only matters if you get back an amount more than you would have paid for something else. After all, if I pay $49,000 for a TRD OFF Road and $45,000 for a Nissan PRO4-X and the Toyota brings $34,000 on trade two years later and the Nissan $30,000 then the Toyota's greater resale doesn't matter.
You only have one vehicle here that’s a true representation. And that’s the raptor. I’m not sure why everybody keeps putting videos together like this. Ranger raptor, Tacoma, Trd pro and the ZR2without the bison package. Truck for truck brand for brand.
For less money than a 2024 TRD Pro! Shows just how insane their MSRP's are. I really wonder who came up with the prices. Did they think that would go over well when Tacoma fans are already upset with them for moving all production to Mexico on top of it. They cut labor cost by like 95% but raised the price of the TRD Pro by over $20k vs the 3rd gen TRD Pro.
Oddly - why make a new powertrain that does what a 6 Cyl does = same mileage, same toque, but add hybrid complexity. I don't get it. Plus people would possibly go for a hybrid with excellent gas mileage - Fingers crossed that the battery lasts the life of the truck... but why would I take those risks for no more power or mileage? That's what I think is odd.

Chevy and ford engines bring replaced for the last 20 years is okay though
@@Mycameron2323 Can't argue your point! Just read that Ford has many new 5.0L engines with porous blocks, major recall.
I like both the Colorado bison and the ranger raptor.
The Colorado ZR2 Bison 🦬 design reminds me of my first truck a 1993 Toyota SR5 🤠
Love these comparison videos
Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk.... After Dark. Will it fist? Is this 6 inches? Jill dropping an F bomb. 😂
Thank you Jill for shutting down Tim’s silly comment about how the taco is just as good as the ranger. Not even close.
The downside of the new Tacoma is that you can't get the manual transmission with the most powerful engine.
The tacoma has the most power.
This is a really strange comparison of packages.
I think it is Chevy biased.
You should compare the Tacoma trd pro with these. The trd off-road cannot compete. The others are top of the line.
It wasn’t there.
Looks like you were struggling to get into the Colorado…could you rate your opinion the ease with getting into and out of each of the vehicles?
It’s just a height issue. Colorado was taller off the ground.
It had more ground clearance than a highway overpass. It probably needs a good running board setup and some grab handles. Annoying when GM omits them when they definitely sell the grab handle part for the truck. It's probably in some stupid overpriced package.
What a dumb question
My wife says that’s 6😂😂
Are you sure about the transmission on the Ranger, you stated it has an 8 speed, but I think it has a 10 speed transmission
Dammit. My bad.
Raptor for me, can still do off-road but for me would be more fun daily driving, its a little rocket on the pavement
As they sit. Raptor hands down. You could take the price difference and put it in and make it even more capable on 35’s.
Zr2 for me!
Great comparo Tim & Jill!
It’s way more capable Off Road than all three of those trucks especially with the upgraded aftermarket parts I added but I will admit they have my truck beat with mpg and street driving but I didn’t buy my truck for the streets that’s what my car is for.😂
Each truck offers something different. We drove all three and liked them but only one can be number 1 and that truck is…
In Australia we get grab handles front and rear.
The Toyota just looks wimpy next to the other two
The TRD Pro would be a better matchup with the Raptor and ZR2 but Toyota's insane pricing kind of breaks the comparison.
When will any of these trucks put in a V8? I don't want a 4 or a 6.
ZR2 Bison ALL DAY EVERY DAY!!!!
Does the blonde in the back seat come with the Bison? If so I might trade my Raptor in.
Interested to see the “will it fist” test….seems extreme for a midsize.
For the price and me not being in love with the size of those trucks I’d save money and get an Outback wilderness and do the things they just did honestly
Looks like a hilux vs amarok vs dmax all pickup are the best
You couldn't get a Nissan Pro4X?
Bison all the way
The stats you published for the ranger are incorrect regarding transmission. Is the other information you have published correct as well?
What a misinformed comment.
ZR3 Bison hands down
My Desert Boss is a bad ass.
Raptor is almost $90K in Canada. Bison is $72K
Ranger Raptor or the F150? Cause I can get a stock ranger rapture for 57-58k here in the states. Bison is over 60K
You could’ve introduced the passenger in the back seat briefly. And stop hanging up on grab handles. Just step up and step in.
She slammed the toyota while driving the ranger....slammed the taco huge
Good
Jill, let the man drive. He’s an expert
“Expert” is relative. I’ve actually competed in two off road rallies and am preparing for my third. 🤷🏻♀️
@@jillciminillo Ohhhh snap! He got burned!!! Niiiice one Jill
She seemed to do really well on the course.
@@Dusdaddy 🙌
Why didn’t you keep it fair with the Toyota Tacoma Trd pro!!!
Because it wasn’t there at the event. Jesus. We said it like three times in the video!
Tacoma
Looks ZR2
If I really want an expensive throwaway disposable pick em up truck……..hands down the Tacoma!!👍🏻👏🏻
geez tim you brought your other boss with you hahaha
I don't think after watching tons of reviews the Ranger Raptor really has any real overall competition. It's like do you want the best or something different
It should have been the TRD model
The Bison should be re-geared to account for the 35” tires and be offered with the 3.0 diesel.
toyota needs little more leg room in the back seats...then it will be the best midsized truck...imo
Holy cow that lady is super annoying
I think she's a nice addition, JMO.
Raptor for me!!;
Ranger Raptor 8 speed???? In Australia they're 10 speed.
Mistype on my part.
Put all 3 to the frame and see what happens 😊
I’d get the ZR2 Bison in black.
You only have one vehicle here that’s a true representation. And that’s the raptor. I’m not sure why everybody keeps putting videos together like this. Ranger raptor, Tacoma, Trd pro and the ZR2without the bison package. Truck for truck brand for brand.
A standard tacoma offroad against these?? Why no TRD Pro??
We said why at least 3 times in the video.
@Pickuptrucktalk I didnt have the volume so I couldn't hear the audio unfortunately as I was in the Dr's office. But, no worries🤙
She definitely wears the pants in the relationship. 😂
They just work together and I think Wisconsin is her home turf.
Raptor is the truck for me. Way better then the Toyota.
@@karlschauff7989 Thats for sure. Its not going to get better.
Wow, she got mad quick when you were doing 1mph and holding the camera. As a guy that was very concerning and a huge red flag. Scary.
I wonder if the group that was putting this on had specifically said not to record while driving.
Toughen hp psy
Raptor for sure. Best midsize truck. Just can’t trust anything Chevy anymore unfortunately. Too many problems
Ranger raptor 🦖 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wish the Bison had the LZ0 3.0
Zr2 over the rest
C’mon Tim, you gotta give us your own preference on which truck YOU would buy!
