      I heard a real guarneri once in my old life. Sorta ruined everything for me. The only thing that sounded like that was a viola a mentor had which was a modern viola and it was amazing and it had an amazing player so that combos always good. But aaaaaaah! Guarneri

      I think Stradivarius would be better suited to soloist work with orchestras due to the sheer resonance/volume of the sound, which doesn’t come across great on microphone. Whereas the Guarneri might be better in a quartet or smaller scale solo recital, just like people, different voices.

      I was just thinking the same thing. The Strad is almost too bright. I guess I prefer the warm, rich tones and almost melancholy feel. The Strad is too joyful. A happy little violin can be spritely, but I prefer a dark cello.

      I actually prefer the Guarneri. I prefer the size of it compared to the Strad and thought it had a nicer sound (even if one had to sacrifice brightness in the higher register). Though as others pointed out, the set ups are different (bridge, tailpiece, etc.). Both are gorgeous either way.

    The Strad is fitted with Belgium bridge/synthetic tailpiece, the Guarneri with French bridge/boxwood tailpiece. They are set up for different playing conditions so it's rather apple vs. orange here. Nevertheless, interesting comparison!

    • @nealeperl9528
      @nealeperl9528 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is very astute of you to notice from the video. Thank you! I used to play my Joseph Filius cello with a French bridge and later switched to a Belgium bridge. It must have increased the sheer volume of sound coming out of the cello by 20% -- with no loss to the quality of sound and colors -- just different colors! As you said, set up in everything! NP

    • @davidemberson8607
      @davidemberson8607 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@harkmay It is a wooden bridge. The tailpiece is synthetic. The Belgian bridge fitted on the cello has less mass at the top and longer "legs." It will make the instrument brighter and louder than a French bridge. The Lord Aylesford is what Starker made many of his recordings with, including the famous recording of the Bach Suites. That was before the upper bout was cut down, and Starker played with the bridge high between the F holes to keep the scale length close to standard.
      Incidentally, I did have a conversation with Starker about the Aylesford around 2007. He said that the Aylesford had the best C string of any cello he ever played. You can see why!

    I'd like to hear the Guarneri in Classical music, where such huge resonance that the Stradivari has is fittingly avoided. Haydn, Boccherini, Abel, and even the Schumann, all fit better in the rounder sound of the Guarneri.
    The Strad is wondrous in telling the Dvořák saga. I think it'd do the Shostakovich and Prokofiev concerti very well; the Kodaly and Hindemith sonatas as well. The bigger, throatier sound is more luscious for such later music.
    What about the Bach suites? I'd love to hear this cellist do ALL the suites on BOTH cellos, because I cannot imagine which would sound more amazing, and also because I'm greedy like that 😁

      Microphone wasn't at the same angle when they played the lower register so I don't know how much deeper that Guarnerius is. The difference on the A string is pretty big though. Guarneri has that darker more transparent sound. It's probably worse as a concert instrument but wow it has a eerie quality to it.

    The strad is great with the higher pitches and is good with intense music. The guaneri is good with the deep pitches and is good with emotional music. Hard to tell from the recording as so many variables are at play, but I was a little surprised that the strad seemed to have a quite significantly more powerful sound/projection, at least in the middle and higher frequency range. In the lower registry the Guarneri seems to have a more punch and a slightly less "muddy" tone. Both sound fantastic, but not until handled by a fantastic cellist, like mr. Ferrández.

    The sonority and projection of the Strad is incomparable, particularly in the upper register. capable of cutting through any orchestra and making itself known; on the other hand the personality of the Guarnarius is far more intimate and personal compared to the Strad which comes off as more cold and aloof. Personally I relate more to the Guarnarius, which is no surprise since I also relate most strongly to Queyras' Cappa cello which also has an exceptionally beautiful personality.

    Strad richer, more vibrant, more bite; has an extra dimension to the tone. The lower register growl in that first piece of the Dvorak (3:13) was blowing the microphone! Guarneri a somewhat polite sound by comparison, possibly more refined, certainly more restrained. I can see them being suited to very different works.

    The Guarnerius has a cute muffled sound. The Strad's is more transparent. I'm no musician, but I've loved cello music for 25 yrs. It's how I can best describe the difference.

    El registro bajo del Guarneri es tan profundo y cálido, sin duda por ese lado se lleva mi 10, aunque los agudos del Guarneri no me gustan tanto como los del Stradivari. Por otro lado, los agudos del Stradivari son tan vivos, aunque sus graves me resultan un poco agresivos

    The strad projects better I think but the guarneri has such a beautiful rich tone

    I think the Guarneri cello has a bit a warmer Sound than the Stradvari, the Stradivari has a clear direct sound .

    Incluso con un micro normal y en el salón de estar se nota claramente que el strad tiene más potencia.

    Such cello porn.. I love both. I'd pick the guarneri, strad's upper register sounds too raw and harsh to me, guarneri's is just hauntigly beautiful, also in mid register it sounds so mellow, and at bass register it's just epic, I think it objectively beats the strad in the bass register by a mile.

    Charming myth. The sound of the instruments would be unrecognizable to Stradivarius and Guarnerius - their instruments have all been 'modernised': longer neck at increased angle, larger bass bar, metal strings, modern bridge, and played with a modern Tourte bow - the sound therefore is completely different compared to the original set-up, lower pitch, and gut strings etc.

    I'd say their about equal in the mid register, but lower goes to Guar and higher goes to the Strad.

    The strad is way better, brighter texture and more control in the bass, less coloration. The med has more depth and more open sounding (more holographic). Strads are really expensive and (apparently) Stradivarius had a secret that nobody to this day knows what it was. certainly amazing holographic sound like really haunting. The med in the other cello had a more boxed in tone to it and that's what kills the holographic illusion (it's all in the tone characteristics). Stradivarius knew how to get that holographic haunting sound way before PS Audio, or KEF did. But my home hacked speakers are more holographic cos I made a few unusual acoustic hacks with my speakers. And I tried hard to get the tone right for that holographic haunting sound (see my ch if you are interested).

    Who are you, how did you pull this off, how much insurance has been taken out just for this video, and why are there only 19k views and 3.1k subscribers with these high stakes at the table?
