    Mannnn, that is some serious rust. You're a braver man than I, that's for sure. Need to find a welding cart like yours when I start welding my rust holes!

    hi just discovered your channel and will be following with interest. I did a full rebuild in a mini back in the 90's (yes I'm an old fart) so although I don't have a mini project to work on now its fun for me to see people having the same sort of grief I had. best of luck and keep at it.
    you are on the right track with freeing off your engine. keep those bores topped up with diesel while you are doing other stuff. if you don't have any joy either turning the crank or rocking the car in gear. remember to leave the plugs out while doing that as you don't want to be fighting against any other compression. failing that then you may as well pull the head. then you can 'carefully' hammer the pistons to try and shock them free. yes you may damage a piston but consider the engine is scrap as it is so you have nothing to lose. use a block of wood on the piston and try to keep to the edges rather than the centre and give them a few taps. if you manage yo get it to move then even though the rings are likely to be damaged it should still run. just depends if it burns oil as a result. for the cost of a gasket set and a few hours work its worth a try. besides a running engine even if its not perfect is some motivation.

      PowderfanOverlord hi 👋🏻 glad you're enjoying the videos, I worry that it's a bit too long, I'll get there in the end. I need to stick to one task per video!
      Funny you say that but today I started by stripping the carb and manifolds off to then take off the HG
      Thanks for watching, keep an eye on the channel for more videos

    POR-15 between the inner and out sills. I used paint remover first then scuffed the metal with steel woof and sand panel then cleaned it up and painted everything with the stuff. Then, applied zinc primer and finally waxoly the whole lot before welding it up. Just leave the edges without paint. Just zinc primer for welding purposes.

      minimoe2008 I've heard a lot of good things about this por 15, think I'll order some for the subframe at least

      minimoe2008 just had a look and that stuff seems crazy expensive!!

    • @minimoe2008
      @minimoe2008 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not crazy expensive. If you think about it in the long run of the vehicle, it's well worth it considering a mini itself is just a big rust trap. a few dollars here means no panel replacement later.

      minimoe2008 I only had a quick look on eBay and saw £150 a tin!

      Mini Matt TV that one I've been working on is definitely only on 3 cylinders. Quite obvious with the head off. Looks like it's been running hot. Just home from Santa Pod and looks like my 1380 is sat in a pool of its own lube so my personal car may need some love 🙄

    I have the same welder and gave up with using gas in the end. Use 0.8 fluxcore. Found good penetration, and similar results if spot welding.. cheaper than buying and wasting gas with this type of welder 👍

    Hello, just found your channel, don't know how far you have got with the engine but I have found brake fluid works wonders on freeing off engines. Put in the bores and leave to soak. It will chuck out loads of white smoke when it fires for the first time. Hope this helps if the diesel doesn't do the trick.

      @MiniMattTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks Alex, I will give that a try, I’ve left the engine for a while but started by taking the head off last week. I’m sure it will go eventually but not in a rush.
      Merry Christmas

    Matt, Once you have welder fixed buy yourself a plug welding nozzle which has two legs on it which will help & give you the nozzle stand off you need to get a better weld. if you have thin metal use thick Copper plate under the weld and it will help bridge the gap and stop you burning a hole through old metal. Also i would say you need to turn down the wire speed. Cheers Dave.

      @MiniMattTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      davejaguar66 great call! I'll have a look at them! I did a couple of plug welds I was proud of set a bit hotter then turned it down and forgot to turn down the wire speed. It's all a learning curve at the minute

    hi there what does the diesel do down in the bores

    • @MiniMattTV
      @MiniMattTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      steven croker hi, the diesel is to lubricate and help loosen the seized pistons, I've also been told cola works well too, obviously I'll need to change the oil anyway.

      Total Car Reviews cheers, maybe in the future, but the plan is just to get it through an mot by the end of the year (and get to L2B) and then make it pretty. I'll probably rattle can paint that bad wing and just try to polish out the rest!

    If you decide to upgrade your welder then I can totally recommend the Clarke 135te. I'm no welder but I found this machine very easy to use. Mine has been tucked away for a few years and have just dug it out again :)

    • @MiniMattTV
      @MiniMattTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm definitely thinking about it, the settings are very limited with two rocker switches for power (min/max and 1/2) and a wire feed knob. I've never used another welder but i think its more operator error than anything. I'll be ok at welding by the time I'm finished and then I can start over haha!
      thanks for watching

    Hello Matt
    Dave from davejaguar mentioned you a little while back. Not sure of your progress freeing the engine but please make sure you don not turn the engine over when the cylinders have desel in them (with the spark plugs fitted) as you will hydrolock the engine. You probably know that..? Anyway, best of luck on your project. To remove the deisel best use a turkey baister or something similar. My engine was 'dry' in my Jag after 8 years sitting, it took quite a whle to get the engine to turn...didn't happen overnight!!!

      @MiniMattTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi Malcolm, thanks for checking out my channel! Always great to hear from new subscribers!
      I haven’t touched the engine yet, I’ll wait until the body is sorted I think. What was your method on freeing the engine?

    hi matt good video but i am not sure about your choice of gas i see your using pub gas and i understand this is incorrect and not much use it gives weak welds argoshield is better bob in derby

    • @MiniMattTV
      @MiniMattTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      bin diver bob hi bob, I did lots of research before deciding to use co2 and came up with no negatives towards the strength of the weld with lots of people having used just co2 to good effect.
