- Bert Gustav Tommy Körberg is a Swedish singer, actor and musician. English-speaking audiences know him best for his role as Anatoly/"The Russian" in the musical Chess. He played the role on the 1984 concept album, and on stage in the 1986 world première West End production in London, as well as several times since.

The song's original language is English. The musical Chess was first staged in London. As a Swede, I have never even heard the Swedish version, because the English version is the internationally known one and I can state that it is best in the original language. Tommy Körberg was the first to perform this role, but since the musical has been performed for so many years, other artists have followed.
I agree that it sound more natural in Swedish, but his 1992 version the audio in English sound unbelievable!

Tommy Körberg is one of, if not the biggest, voice in Sweden, truly a national icon and treasure. Ever since he originated the role of Anatolij/The Russian on West End in the 80s, I don't think anyone has been able to do this song like he does (though many are very good). I loved the Swedish version of the musical as a child (I had it on dvd and CD) but Anthem is such an iconic song in English, it's impossible to pick which version I like most. You should check out his other big song "Stad i ljus" (City in light") which is a classic song that he won with at Melodifestivalen/Schlagerfestivalen (the Swedish outtake for Eurovision) in 1988.
Just make sure to get the record version or the live version from Melodifestivalen, not the Eurovision final, as he was suffering a throat infection during the recording of that.
Check out "One Night in Bangkok" from Chess as well (as you are living in Thailand). A totally different hit song, which lyrics were quite controversic, Thailand even banned it! Top hit in many countries, nr 3 in Canada.

Tommy Körberg did a duett with Celine Dion once. You should search for this video. 😂 Tommy doesnt showed her his fantastic voice under the soundcheck, so she wasnt prepared for what he did at the real show then.

The song is called Anthem in english and was written for Tommy Körberg but in english, because Chess was written in english to begin with, it was produced in London. The version you're watching is the Swedish version that they did in 2004,
the original musical is from 1986 or something, but all of it is written by Björn and Benny from ABBA.
Unlike musicals which generally don't get any radio time, Chess released a concept album before officially staging it as a musical. It also produced several singles.

Tommy Körberg truly is the best Swedish Singer! I saw him in a musical in November and seeing him in concert this summer
For context, the discussion/songvthat precedes the song in the Swedish version takes place right after Anatoly has defected from the Soviet Union, leaving his life and family (including a wife and son) behind to be with Florence (Helens character). Florence's father was taken during the revolution in Hungary and knows what it is like to leave everything behind, hence the question "What do you feel?"

Tommy körberg is definetly the very best male singer we have in sweden ❤ his vocal ability is absolutly amazing. He is still performing 75yo and sounds better than ever.

when Benny and Björn (from Abba) made this musical they made this song for Tommy Körberg...and had his singing voice in mind when they created this song.
Tommy Körberg is amazing, I love his cover of "Fattig Bonddräng" from Emil i Lönneberga, a series based on books written by one of Swedens most known authors; Astrid Lindgren. Higly recommend giving it a listen, though I'm not sure if there is a good translation to English.
Another favorite of mine is "Eivør Pálsdóttir: Tròdlabùndin (Trøllabundin) - 10.08.13" It feels like it's from a magical world or story.
The Musica Chess is written by Björn and Benny from ABBA and Tommy is the original Singer of the show. Sadly he has done time in jail and when the show went to america Tommy could not get a green card to get in to the States and they where forced to replace him.

Körberg is fantastic. On a whole other level than Groban imo. As a Swede I put him second to Björling, who on the other hand is Primo Tenore of course and not on the same play field as musical artist.But that just gives a hand at how good a singer Körberg really is,.

The most successful in the music industry from Sweden (depends on how you measure success) is Max Martin. If his name sounds unfamiliar, that's because that's the way he wants it to be. But I think you recognize his songs if you search for his name here on YT.

I really like your reaction to this and Tommy is a real legend. Funny thing is that it was the first time I heard there was a Swedish version of it (I´m Swedish), I´ve heard the English version so many times (The English is still better though - The original is always better!) :)
I prefer the English Original version from the concept album, still Tommy singing...You will never here Björn and Bennys music in commercials or very restricted in films. They are very conservative how there music is used.

Hahah I just heard your struggle to understand how his the spelling and pronunciation works together. In Sweden we have a lot of sch-sounds (as when you're hushing a kid). For example, the Swedish word for cheek is spelled "kind", where the K sounds like ch as in cheek or chin. Most of the time a K sounds lika a K, tho. Other examples of combined letters that makes some sort of sch-sound is sj/stj/ch/tj.
The "Ö" is pronounced almost as the "i" in "bird".

From a French point of view, I think if you pronounce it Sheur-bery, you should be pretty much spot on :) The Ö in swedish is basically "eu" in french.
