- The majority of people agree the Colorado Avalanche are a very good team. But would they go as far as to call them a "pretender" when it comes to competing for a Stanley Cup? One writer at SI.com thinks so and it's solely revolves around the goalie position.

Looking only at the regular season last year. The Avs were arguably league average goal tending away from competing for the presidents trophy.

"Pretender" is way too strong a term, but headlines are about getting you to read the article, so it worked! If he thought Georgie was the issue in the playoffs, he only watched game 1 vs. Winnipeg, and his opinion can be tossed.
We have a friend that seems to bring a loss every time he comes over to watch with us, and sometimes when he's over and they go down a goal we'll banish him to the garage, lol. But we know it's silly because he was in the room for game 6 vs. the Blues in '22.
Love the blue equipment on the home uniform but on the away uniform it still looks off. They should wear burgundy pants and gloves with the white jerseys.

Chris I’m the opposite with superstitions about looking away. I swear my teams do better when I do look away. Sometimes I’ll turn a game off when they’re losing, then see a notification that they came back, so I turn it back on and they start losing again.
I do the same thing lmao or ill turn off the tv, go to my room and watch it on my phone. I swear it works 😂

When Landy returns, we’ll have a better idea how far they can go. I doubt anyone playing in the NHL believes the Avs aren’t capable of winning another cup with the current core.

Everybody gets so offended over the pretender term that was only chosen because it rhymes with contender. Of course there are no actual pretender teams, it simply refers to a team that is good but with varying degrees of flaws.
I guess it depends on what you see as a pretender. I see them as a top 4 in the west team. Edmonton didnt improve, i dont think the avs gained or lost any ground, dallas is the same to slightly worse, and depending on demko health the canucks are the same to slightly worse. Now adding gabe and val by the end of the calendar year could make this an entirely different looking team. It is a possibility that gabe plays on the 3rd line, and who has that feels like the depth they need
Definitely a pretender if Val is still around to let us all down again in the playoffs. Best of luck to him, but hope he never comes back.
The title "Pretender" doesnt really belong in hockey because its so random that almost half the league is things just breaking their way away from going to the finals. As for the Avs ive talked to multiple Stars fans and they are all terrified of us because everything went against us and we still were "this close" to probably being in the finals last year.
My superstition is i dont watch must win games, i feel like they lose when i do. I watched all of the finals except game 6 and i watched game 6 vs the Stars so i apologize lol

Cant say I've ever been that superstitious. But sometimes when their losing i think its because im watching while being to invested and as a result are somehow applying unnecessary pressure onto the team. Doesn't really make sense but in the moment...
Secondly ive wondered what the avs would look like if they flipped the burgundy and blue on the pants and had a red helmet.
With this amount of talent, the Avs are perennial contenders. However, to thrive they need to be consistently creative. It's painful to see them lifeless and mundane (e.g. predictable PP). Is Gabe the missing factor that could jolt them awake in the times of need? Hope we'll find out this very season.

Nobody is afraid of the Avalanche anymore. Without Landeskog or Nichushkin this team is complete pretenders. The '22 team is long ago dismantled and replaced with a offense minded, small, weak group built on passing. They have no "fuck you" mentality guys but #29 and #42. After Mackinnon and Makar there's nobody that's stepped up for all this offense they're supposed to have. The balance of size and depth is so far from what it was in the cup run. Smells like a pretender to me.
I hate to say it.. they are right. We need to stop worrying about goal scoring and start worrying about defense and goal tending.
Avs fans have been lead on by the front office to believe passing and skating IS defense. They are so very wrong its painful to watch.

They are expecting Nichushkin back in November so there is no need to replace him right now
Pretender is possibly a reaction to playoffs the last couple years. They have definitely had some bad luck. That said their issue with developing in house has made it hard when injuries or other things come up. This season will have alot of intrigue as who comes back or who does not or can not. They need their 2c to really step up in the post season. It does seem like they might be getting better at developing so we will see.
I think pretender has to do with playoffs. The prob with mckinnon carrying the team in the reg season is in the playoffs with the change in play replicating that is very hard. That said I think this discussion is good it depends on definition. You could easily say Toronto are the kings of pretenders.
There is a need to replace him tho he has consistently let the avs down Time and time again when we needed him most we need someone who won’t do that
