  • In this video, I show you how I use lock boxes on my layout for operating at industrial spurs. These boxes represent gates and a place for customers to leave operating notes for the crew on how to spot cars on the spur.

All of these things that you've incorporated on your layout really add a level of interest to the operation. Good stuff.

the instructions inside the box is a VERY real operation... i was a switchman and we had the same thing on a coal train assignment … before we pulled the empties we had to check the mailbox for bad orders as the car dept would inspect the coal cars AFTER the train was dumped... we would then dig the B/O out

Hey Eric, I've been catch'n up on sum of your videos, your nice ideas keep it real and your lock box reminds me of all the times we would have to unlock a lock box at a switch, throw a handle to unlock the switch and/or start a timer which was a process in itself.. just an idea, if you ever put in a few tortoises then you could have a toggle sw. inside your box and the crew would have to unlock the box to throw that switch.. then they cant cheat! 🤪

Thank you for watching and catching up on the videos! Yes, that is a great idea to have the automatic switch in the box - you could also have a manual throw mechanism located in a box. I decided to go with a very simple route, although it is nice to have lots of options!
