  • Per subscriber request, here is the third installment of FashVoVidDic (Fashion Vocabulary Video Dictionary), a mishmash of vocabulary on how to draw, how to design, and how to construct coats. Includes both menswear and womenswear.
    I'm a huge fashion geek and this is just one long video of me geeking out, sometimes seriously, occasionally ridiculously, but I promise I stay on topic 99% of the time.

    Have always loved coats! For me, I've always gravitated towards swing coats, always found them elegant.

    Love a video about the inner construction of coats and jackets. Help choosing the correct canvases in more detail rather than the heavier the fabric the heavier the canvas. 😊

    I went to school for fashion design and construction in the 90s. What a great refresher. If I had you for a teacher I would have begged to be your TA. You crack me up!

    In my language (Dutch) we call a toggle closure "houtje-touwtje" which basically translates to "piece of wood, piece of rope", and it rimes.

    Does duster fall under one of these categories? I'm sorry if I'm asking a dumb question; I'm a finance person who hand-knits and loves your videos. You are a superhero, pushing for more pockets in women's clothing.

    Awesome tutorial! I didn’t realize how ignorant I was on coats. I also love pockets and am very frustrated by the shortening of the pocket interior which lets my cell phone fall out.
    Thank you!

    Hey, this is great! Could you do a video analysing some fashion designers, how you think they have gone about the construction/design of some of the garments. Vivienne Westwood, Dries Van Noten? I honestly believe Westwood is a genius of design! Much appreciated! x

    You know who else loved pockets? Coco Chanel. I remember reading somewhere she was obsessed with pockets and did not miss any occasion to slap them onto everything she designed, especially bags. I think they're useful and can be somewhat cool, but the process of sewing them, ugh... makes me cringe. Especially the double welt.
    Thanks for the thorough video!

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's why the classic Chanel jackets have the 4 pockets on the front.
      Sewing double welt pockets with buttons and flaps, TWO, so they have to be perfectly symmetrical, in a slippery worsted. Not the worst thing in the whole world but it's close.

      You mean does a designer need to learn how to cut patterns? Yes. Go research online, read some books, take a class.

    While searching the web, I learned that duffle coats are called that way because the coats are made of duffle.

    I'm just watching your videos and I wonder if all designers using tracing as a method of putting clothes on a model? I always thought you just have to take a piece of paper and silhouette has to be drawn let's say- from memory. is this acceptable in fashion schools? I hope you got my point :)) anyway good job!

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, mostly designers use templates to speed the process along. Our focus is in developing design and drawing just well enough to communicate. We're not illustrators who do things by scratch all the time.

      I've never gotten headers or swatches from websites--I got them from fabric sales reps. If you're not a designer with a resale certificate, you can try Mood Fabrics. I think they have a site you can order swatches from.
