Thank you very much for this article. My father worked as an Executive Engineer for the GPO (Later British Telecomm) most of his life. In the early 1960's before I started school he would pick my mother & I up every Friday & he would go to visit his staff in the Runcorn, Frodsham, Helsby, Manly area. It would be an afternoon out for us. I have a vivid & scary memory of one day being taken by my father onto the railway bridge when I would have been about 4-5 years old. He had staff attending to telephone cables running on the bridge. We must have been on this now closed walkway.
I didn’t want this vid to end, that bridge and walkway are absolutely stunning, possibly my favourite architectural construction, now the transporter bridge has gone. My mother remembers the transporter, it would pause going over the Manchester Ship Canal. Im impressed, amazed, jealous and grateful for the photos you have of the footpath, I’ve seen the black and whites but the modern day ones I’m astounded!
They still have the water pick channel in the middle of the tracks on the bridge itself. Remember going by steam between London and Liverpool in the late 50s early 60s #happydays
Thanks for posting this, I always wanted to walk over there since my uncle told be about it 30 odd years ago! Shame its never been re-opened but I guess it makes it a bit too easy for the local yobs to throw bricks at passing trains
'Ethelfleda or Aethelflaed is the name of Alfred the Great's daughter who led the Mercian re-conquest from the Vikings and arrived at Runcorn for the final battle with them south of the Mersey.
