  • Compilation of some moments during a 7h stopover in Amsterdam. Thank you Kia, Jorge, Sanja and Woof for your time and good mood!
    There are a million things to do and see in this amazing city but this was meant to be a chilled and unplanned bicycle ride.
    I'm glad I rode a bicycle there and I definitely recommend it! It's certainly a different world from what I'm used to.
    Thank you Bicycle Dutch for the clips!

    It feels so peaceful seeing how organized and respectful people are with the bike lanes. No one having a mini heartattck from walking onto the bike lane and having to go around a parked car. Top representation on how bike lanes should be. ❤

      Amsterdam is considered the worst place for cyclists by Dutch standards, so imagine what the rest of the country is like.

    • @MarkNieuwenhuizen
      @MarkNieuwenhuizen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MythicMichaela Lots of street where bike line is between road and parking on the curb. Got my sixth sense for doorging there. Other thing with Dutch cycling infrastructure is that bike lanes are used by all non-car traffic while made for bike traffic in seventies. So it can get crowded and dangerous there. In summer days, with lots of elderly on electric bikes, I choose to ride my recumbent trike on the road (legal if you are 75 cm wide, called bakfietsregel cargobike ruling). cars are, mostly, respectful for bicycles because most have a bike too.

      @@MarkNieuwenhuizen The painted bike lanes still stem from 'ye olden days' of bicycling infrastructure in the 90's, generally they're not constructed like that anymore since the standard has long been updated.

    I enjoyed this video very much. My parents are Dutch, but I was born in New Zealand. I was last in Holland in 1978 to cycle around the country, but I never got to Amsterdam. I hope to return to the Netherlands before 50 years have gone by to rediscover my roots, and to do a lot of cycling there again!

    Was also there in May, took my Brompton with me and unpacked it at the airport and had 4 nice days of fun bicycle riding in the Netherlands.
    Can't recommend it enough!
    Also very easy to take bikes on trains and, as I did, go to the Hague and bike back to Amsterdam along the North sea coast or go to Utrecht and cycle back to Amsterdam along the river Vecht.
    Awesome!
    Now if he could train the dog to bark when someone is in the way that would be the perfect bicycle dog!

    Not sure if that's been mentioned by others in the comment, but you ask whether there's a law around the 10:50 mark. There's actually a law for newer buildings (since 1990 I think? Don't quote me on that one) that they have to be built with a storage area of a specific size, that can fit roughly two or three bikes. So yes, there is a law for that here!
    Also, glad that you enjoyed Amsterdam!

    • @peterslegers6121
      @peterslegers6121 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there's a continuing line of laws, research and model-policies and -regulations. Some data:
      Since the 1902 Woningwet (housing law), municipalities already made local building regulations (bouwverordening). With the 1992 Bouwbesluit the national government tried to make those more uniform. The Bouwbesluit (1992; 2003; 2012) indeed requires bicycle parking space (stallingsruimte) in or around new buildings, although the 2003 version did not demand it for housing. (Bouwbesluit 2003, Afd. 4.11 Stallingsruimte voor fietsen, Tabel 4.62) An example of those requirements: BB2012-Afd.4.5: housing, individual storage room: at least 5m² (54ft²), 1,8m (6ft) wide, 2,3m high.
      Of course municipalities can include more requirements in their bouwverordening and Bestemmingsplannen (destination plans). With the transition towards the Omgevingsplan (2021) those national norms are about to be dropped in order to make regulations more flexible. Several municipalities have already made policies that continue to include bicycle parking requirements (fietsparkeernormen). www.fietsberaad.nl/Kennisbank/Rotterdam-heeft-nu-ook-fietsparkeernormen

    It’s obvious those who walk on bike lanes and don’t check before crossing are tourists
    When it’s just common sense, we have to trust the same people with lack of common sense in everyday life, that’s scary (this should be a comment in your other heart attack video but I’m too busy watching that dog while typing !)

      Yes, I am sure she feels safe. I am Dutch and I transported 3 children together on one bike. Like on this picture defietssite.nl/kind-mee-op-fiets/.
      One in front and 2 behind plus a 80 liter double bike bag for the shoppings. Most of the Dutch families have only one car. Riding a bicycle feels the same as walking to me. The only negative part is that you get very muscled calves. About a helmet: You can recognize the tourists by wearing a helmet. I am 52 and never got a bike accident or fell with my bike. I have to bike with rain, snow and on slippy roads in winter too. I love the feeling of biking, hard to describe, it feels like you are really in the place where you are.I will never get that feeling in a car behind windows.

    MI NOMBRE ES TODSOM ZUÑIGA PEREA Y VIVO EN COLOMBIA, SOY MENSAJERO INDEPENDIENTE, TENGO MI MOTO DAÑADA, Y POR CAUSA DE DINERO NO PUEDO ARREGLARLA. MI ZONA DE TRABAJO ES EL CENTRO DE LA CIUDAD DE BARRANQUILLA COLOMBIA Y A PESAR DE QUE TENGO UNA BICICLETA NO ES LA APROPIADA PARA MI LABOR. HE OBSERVADO LAS BICICLETAS CARGO Y ME GUSTARÍA TENER UNA, PERO ADMITO QUE NO ESTÁN A LA ALCANCE DE MI BOLSILLO Y MENOS AHORA CON ESTA SITUACIÓN APRETADA EN LA QUE ME ENCUENTRO. QUISIERA TENER UNA Y SER ASÍ UN IMPULSADOR PARA LA VENTA DE LA MISMA EN ESTA CIUDAD Y DE ESTE PAÍS. COMO LES AGRADECERÍA ESA AYUDA PARA CONTINUAR MI LABOR DE MENSAJERIA Y SEGUIR SIENDO DE BENDICIÓN PARA MI FAMILIA Y LA SOCIEDAD.

    It was better when Dogs could run free in the parks , make friends and sometimes enemies in bloody fights , kids could get bitten go to hospital to get a jab against rabies and an ice cream or some candy afterwards has compensation for their bravery.
    Today men's best friend has a life only comparable to that of a Canary in tiny cage all day long deep inside a dark mine.
    Dogs bite , Cats scratch and they both poo and get fleas but by now we have legislated more about that than about fighting poverty and discrimination among ourselves.

      Dog bites can be very serious and children can get heavy wounded. Once in a while I read about children who got attacked by agressive dogs and even die! Just search on google about pictures how terrible a dog bite can be. If we could be sure that only friendly dogs would walk freely, then I wouldn't mind that dogs are walking freely around. But nowadays also too many people do have a dog and there are still shitty dog owners who don't clean up the shit from their dog.

    For a truly peaceful cycling experience you should go to a less touristy town. Ignorant tourists love to stand in the middle of the cycle lanes in Amsterdam. I have never heard anybody speak Dutch in the city centre of Amsterdam. All tourists.
