That's very good, really intense. I'll never forget the look on Neal's face when Peter kept scolding him, telling him over and over. reminding Neal that he was a criminal, that's how he saw Neal. He was so crushed. so hurt by the one person he trusted the most. He used his expertise to help the FBI, only to have it thrown back in his face. I cried so hard to see his spirit ground to nothing. 😢

Yeah, exactly. That crushed look in Neal's eyes, the resignment and hurt, it's so heartbreaking. *cry*
They expected him to change, but never really gave him a chance. And the poor kid tried so hard.
Peter's betrayal in season 5 (the "you're a criminal, nothing more" thing) in addition to Dr. Summers psychedelic suggestive drug and her telling him he doesn't want to be reformed... seriously, why change, if no one ever aknowledges it? It's not even a concsious decision, because when people you trust/the whole world tells you over and over you're nothing more than a criminal and never will be, you'll start to believe it and live it, too, sooner or later. For Neal to succeed at reformation, the FBI and Peter's view has to reform too. After all, those criminal acts, they are DONE. They are in Neal's past. It's nothing he can change. He can only change the present and for that he needs trust and someone on his side. Peter's 180 in regards to Neal being a criminal versus him being more, being reformed in season 5 and 6 broke the poor guy- understandably.
I mean I believe that Peter does love Neal as a friend, but his inability to accept him as he is and recognize all the good he is doing, all the reformation that already happened, that's a horrible betrayal. Where is the Peter that told Neal to run back in the season 3 finale? That realized and saw the good in Neal and the unfairness in the system that wouldn't recognize Neal deserved to be free?
It destroyed all the good that came before. And Neal was as good as reformed. Even those heists he did pull while working for White Collar were less the actions of a criminal planning to stay a criminal and more about closure, about making sure the past did not keep returning, about the good side. It was tying up loose ends, something that HAD TO BE DONE in the best way he could, all in the name of reformation. But no, all everyone else sees is the criminal he had been, instead of the reformed man he became. Even Mozzie, though he can be forgiven because he is a criminal himself and has understandable trouble believing anyone would want to give that up. In addition, he distrusts the system very much and feels they are the enemy 9,99 times out of 10. He acts more out of a wish to protect Neal, when he says he's deluding himself. And Neal was deluding himself, but the delusion was not about whether he could reform/is a good man (he *is* a good man and he could reform, in fact he did), but more about believing, even for a second, that the so called good guys, the law, the system, would allow him to embrace life on "the right side of the law", would accept his reform.
Also, the things the Feds allow in the name of "good" aren't exactly different than being a con. I can't stop remembering who it was that practically *begged* not to involve poor Amy Harris in the Panther's schemes- that was Neal. Not Peter, or any of the other "good" guy's, but Neal, the purposed criminal. Neal also shouldered the blame when it all went horribly wrong, instead of telling her his seducing her had been part of a FBI sanctioned operation and something he was against from the very beginning, Because he is Neal- he could have found a way to explain it to her. He did have feelings for her, after all.
What was it Neal (or Mozzie?) said in one episode? Something about "so it's wrong because I'm a criminal, but it's right when the FBI is doing it"? Exactly THAT.
Lastly, Neal isn't a bad man. He never was. Yeah he interpreted the law liberally at times but seriously? That law isn't exactly for the people and good most times. It's a law that gives power to the strong, the rich, trampling everyone else underfoot. Yeah, actually, I believe Mozzie I think. At least when it comes to the FBI and other corporate gonvermental institutions, the guy does have a point when he says that they are evil. Not necessarily the people themselves, mind, but the system? Hell yeah. How many people suffer hunger and fight for their lifes daily just because the so-called law doesn't give them the chance they deserve, only empowering the rich? How many criminals are there out there like Neal that just want to LIVE, turning to crime because they see no other way- because there IS no other way? I'm not talking about murderers/killers, rapists, pedophiles, people who take from the poor (btw, incidentally, those are the so called good guys, the governments and corporations that do that)- such people need to be imprisoned and the keys lost. No, I'm talking about people like Neal, or Mozzie. They are not evil or bad, just on the wrong side of the law.
I'd love to read some post-series fanfiction that deals with exactly that- with Peter and his side reflecting, truly reflecting, just how harsh and unfair they had been and realizing that their actions and words ensured Neal wouldn't want to continue their "deal" and taking real action to apologize and bring Neal back...maybe I'll write some myself some time.

I just recently finished White Collar and I’m still thinking about S5, especially Peter’s attitude change. My take on it is that, after being arrested for murder, Peter had… I guess you could call it an epiphany. In the S4 finale he put on Neal’s anklet, something unlike him (it was certainly a “holy shit” reveal for me) but very symbolic of how far he had let his relationship with Neal take him. I think while incarcerated he did a lot of thinking-a lot of re-evaluating. He decided he needed to get his priorities straight: somehow prove his innocence, get his job back, and focus on building a future for him and Elizabeth.
When he reminded Neal that Neal was a criminal, I got the sense that he was saying it more to himself than to Neal. (His “shame on me” comment gives me that impression.) I think he was trying to solidify that things needed to change. He needed to stop covering for Neal-which he did on multiple occasions-and stop risking his job and livelihood. He also wanted things to change in terms of how they operated. Neal handled situations *as* a criminal-a con is a con, even if done for the right reason-and Peter wanted to stop letting his bond with Neal cloud his judgment on that. So he distanced himself. He did and said things that were uncharacteristic of him in order to keep his promise to himself to get his life on track. This was undoubtedly hard on Neal, who felt unappreciated and betrayed, but I think the distance did help Neal in a way. Neal had always had a childish impetuousness about him (Matt Bomer even stated that he modeled him after his own son, who was three years old at the time). I think the distance helped him grow up a bit. As Peter said in S6, speaking as Neal’s pretend father, “I tried to sculpt him into the man I know he can be. At some point, he has to grow up-become his own man.”

S5 saw Peter and Neal’s roughest patch, and it was for sure painful-not only, for me, because of Peter’s emotional detachment but also because of Neal’s actions. Due to his involvement with Hagen, Neal had to keep huge secrets from Peter, and in my opinion, he was in many ways more a criminal than we’d ever seen him. The scene of him dancing down the hallway to destroy the evidence that he and Peter had gathered was a punch to my gut. It was haunting, and such a betrayal, regardless of his reasons for doing it. (As a side note, and I blame the writing for this: I think Neal should have been smart enough to find a way to exonerate Peter on his own, without resorting to working with Hagen. I mean, come on! You know he's going to use you, and it's going to get you into trouble!)

One of the things I loved about the show was the evolution, with lots of bumps in the road, of Peter’s understanding of how to handle Neal, both in terms of their partnership and on a more personal level. He made lots of mistakes with him, at times being overbearing, too quick to judge, and trying to mold Neal into his own image. (I think some people, going by what I've seen, forget that Peter is human. He has faults just as Neal does, and like Neal, that doesn’t invalidate him or make him a bad person. I also think Peter’s hypocrisy makes him more believable. Very few people stick to one set of standards indefinitely. Our standards change by situation and over time, sometimes over a short period of time.) But eventually, at the end of S5-after his prison stint scared him and caused him to go too far in the opposite direction-and throughout S6, he reached a place that was best for both of them.

Awesome video! The show was amazing and complex. Beautiful. For me though, I wish there was a different end. It was a great 'con' but they shouldn't have left it like that imo. Neal doesn't fit into a box of 'criminal' or in the box of his life at the FBI. I liked how at the end of season 5 they showed that he actually was thinking about his future. Wanting to start something new. I wanted more of that. To see Neal struggle in a new life but to also eventually succeed and to finally come into his own as an (original) artist. Not just because he deserved it but because he's not like anyone else. When they say 'very few' criminals refrain from re-offending or end up back in prison, Neal is that 'few'. He's the one that would have succeeded in a new life.
I feel like if they were giving more episodes to work with they probably would have written the ending like that. That way Neal could still has his family in New York and be free to come and go as he pleases. To do as he pleases, he'd just find a legal way to get everything he wants.

I would move heaven and earth to keep Neal safe he deserves to be protected but what he doesn't deserve is to be treated like a criminal he is a very caring and loving person who has a heart of gold & he has a lot of love for his friends and family. The choice he made at the end of White Collar was a very selfless choice he chose to sacrifice his life for his friends and family so that the Panthers wouldn't hurt them to get to him & to tell ya the truth I would have done the same damn thing if it meant protecting him as well 'cause he deserved to live & be happy & most of all loved. The Kate thing I would've helped him heal his heart and let him know that he is never ever alone 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺.

As I said before Peter can be harsh but he does it out of love not hate and I get that but I what I don't get is why he treats him like a criminal until he realizes that he is more like a son to him than a person who he sees as a criminal or con-artist. But enough about that for right now I had this scary dream last night that I was in the tunnel with Neal & Keller & I grab Neal's free hand & I'm like come with me ya don't have to fight him he's not worth the fight let's go so we start to go & Keller is like halt right there nobody move & I'm like oh no he has a knife & Neal is like go it'll be ok just go & I'm like no I can't leave ya alone with him plz come with me I can't lose ya plz come with me plz & Neal is like ok so we make it out of the tunnel & run right past Peter & Peter is like what is it what's wrong and I'm like it's Keller he's in the tunnel he was trying to kill my brother but I got him out there before things escalated between him and Keller. So Peter goes to the tunnel and arrests Keller for attempting to murder my brother and I turn to Neal & I'm like are ya ok and he's like yeah thnx to ya sis look I didn't plan anything except my freedom & now we can go to Paris the safe way. So we head back to our apartment and June is like thank goodness y'all are both safe & I'm like we are so so sorry that we put ya thru this & June is like it's ok baby girl all that matters is that y'all are safe & then Moz is like Nell how did ya & Neal escape & I'm like I sweet talked him into following me by letting him know that Keller wasn't worth the fight & he agreed so here we are & Moz is like thank goodness. So what are y'all's plans & I'm like Moz I don't know but what I do know is that he don't ever have to worry about Keller again & speaking of Peter joins us & I'm like Peter did ya arrest him & Peter is like no I did y'all one better I killed him 'cause no one messes with my family & gets away with it & him like thnx Peter and he's like y'all are very welcome Nell now where do y'all to plan on going & Neal is like Paris me and my little sister leave here for Paris so that none of y'all get hurt by the Panthers & I'm like let's go tonight so we pack our things and I could sense that he was feeling a little on the shaky side & I was like hey hey what is it what's wrong & he's like it's Kate I miss her & I'm like I know I know I miss her too hey look at me her death was not your fault don't beat yourself up ok look at me you're not alone ok I'm right here you're safe now it's ok. So we finish up with our packing and I rub his back lovingly & (kiss) him on the cheek letting him know that he's not alone & so we head out the door & June is like baby girl y'all take Bugsy with y'all & I'm like ok so she gets his things and we take him with us & I hug mama bear & Moz & Peter and I'm like Peter take good care of these two & Peter is like will do now go so Neal & I go & so we make it to the airport & I'm like hey hey it's ok I'm right here so we board our plane & head to Paris & so we make it to Paris & Neal is like Nell I can't even begin to imagine my life without ya in it & I'm like I know I feel the same way big bro you're stuck with me ok I'm right here and I'm not going anywhere ok (kiss) on the cheek.
