This is fantastic, thank you. We’re probably close neighbors based on the contractors you used in Bucks County. I’ll be using this for our house. Thanks!
Brother, congratulations! Looks amazing and I know you'll love the new functionality. I've got 2 of these loathsome L columns. From your project to Gods ears and back, into my garage. Amen🙏
As a woodworker, I am looking forward to doing this to my garage as well. Wasn't thinking about removing the front support and adding a massive door. Genius! Thank you.
You should have removed the lolly and the center front beam yourself. I assume that is super satisfying. Enjoy your new space. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
@@pablorodriguez5100 Noooooo! I would not remove the Lally column or the support between the doors myself. It was done by a team led by structural engineers, which I am not!
Milos, I have been enjoying this renovation every day without exception. It was a long way to go for what some people think was a minor change, but if you are in a similar situation then it is worth it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
It was a long way to go but I am so glad we made this change! It has been a couple of weeks, and this renovation has given me a brand new lease on how I am using the garage. Thanks for watching and commenting! :-)
I pray to the garage gods that my house was not blessed with a Lally beam. You must be relieved to be rid of that nuisance. Looking forward to part II.
Yes, I don’t wish Lally columns on anyone. I get why they are used, and they probably dramatically reduce construction costs. But they are a PAIN in the… 😆
Greats videos thanks for sharing. I just wondering how much it cost you to remove the lally column and replace for a metal brackets same thing for the doors I just want have and idea for the future
The structural work in this video cost about $9000. (The Lally column and the front header each cost $4,500.) The new garage door (in the next video) cost about $6000. Thanks for watching!
Thank you. That job was done in N.J? im trying to do the same on my basement and probably on my first floor i already stated to clean all waals on my basement next step is to contact one o these companies yo remove the lally column and to add support in it.
@HamHo - Sorry for the delayed response. The structural work in this video cost about $9000. (The Lally column and the front header each cost $4,500.) The new garage door (in the next video) cost about $6000. Thanks for watching!
@MikeFyxdt - How much you paid per linear feet (I see you have total cost), and when did you get this work done? Did you get estimate from other contractors?
@patel1 - The work was done 2 years ago (August, 2021). The linear foot cost for the structural work was around $230/ft., plus some engineering & permit costs. I did my research on the company ahead of time, so I felt pretty good going with them and not shopping around.
Was there any concern about foundations? What did the structural engineer say about that? I'm surprised you didn't have to upgrade the foundation at both sides of the garage doors that are now holding the loads from the lally column and the center post.
Rob, that is a great question! You know, the center support between the garage doors wasn’t actually resting on any type of footing. I thought it would have been, but when that section of wall came down it seemed like the framing was just sitting on the lip of the garage. As such, I don’t think it was particularly loadbearing. Well, I suppose that’s why we hire engineers and then have it inspected by the township. So far so good! 😁
That's great, but it doesn't appear that the engineer took the additional loads into account that are bearing on the columns at both ends of the new overhead door opening. There is a considerable additional load on those columns.
What size bolts were used to bolt the c channel to the flat plate ?? Also what size was your existing beam? What size is the c channel the plate was 1/2" by how tall ?
Jason, great questions. EDIT: at 2:39 I show the sectional detail from the plans… my first answer was close. The bolts are 1/2”, and the c-channel and backing plates were 10” wide by 1/2” thick. The existing beam was sandwiched 2x10 manufactured laminated beams. Thanks for your questions and for watching!
@@MikeFyxdt Hi Mike, I am thinking to do the same for my garage and i have the same annoying lallygone in the middle. did you hire a separate engineering company or lallygone take care of the permits? Are you happy with the results since the work done? I am also planning to go with lallygone as well. Do you recommend them?
@@diysave1136 Lallygone took care of all of the drawings, and I took care of submitting them to the township and paying for permits. I do highly recommend Lallygone. Also, since they do not do any finishing work after they do the structural changes you may want to have a general contractor on hand, unless you want to do the final steps yourself. Good luck with your project!
@chukzombi - it is massive, and I admit that I wondered if it would be worth it... it is! The approach from my driveway is at a weird angle, and this makes the garage sooo much more accessible. But, yeah, I hear you! Thanks for watching. :)
My only thing is I’m in western PA and looks like Lally Gone only operates in eastern PA (as far as their PA service area includes) so I guess I’d have to find someone here but unsure if anybody else offers a similar service.
The cost is based on the length of the support beam that needs to be reinforced when the Lally column is removed. If I had just removed the column, my project would have been around $4500.
