    85 year old lifetime boater with 100 ton USCG Masters license and retired airline captain here. This boat is presently not river-worthy let alone seaworthy. The propulsion is an unreliable system of nightmare complexity. This is a big heavy boat that ought to cruise at over 9 knots. You should know the height of your mast within at least 6 inches. This can be calculated along a measured length of dock with a sextant. Patchwork improvisation and repair will not solve this vessels shortcomings. Somebody had to say this.

    Just a heads up. When you get in the Mississippi and you get up above New Orleans and all along the way down to Southwest pass, there's going to be a lot of sediment in the river water. I don't remember what kind of head you have, but the sediment will stop up your toilet flush valves.
    Also, if you're using it for your engine Cooling watch that carefully. In the spring with all the rain the river runs a couple knots and it will push you right along. I've run that River many times years ago doing tug barge/ combination and bulk freighters. We always had an issue with our storage/cooling water and flush water because of the sediment.

    Something like the propulsion system failure was always going to happen. If you can, weld on a step for an outboard on your transom. Then get yourself some speedboat controls rigged to it. Raise and lower your outboard with your davits. You'll be fine and have a nice backup for your main propulsion.

      We'll I already switched to a higher torque motor, but I have the system psi turned down. I'll crank it back up. Too high and it smokes the clutch on the main engines pump. If the transmission works out, I'll likely add a PTO there with a better pump. And I have the wash down pump but it's part of the RO system, and I don't want this muddy river water in those lines. : )

      @@SVSeeker You will eventually make it reliable, the variable pitch system I had, was activated by an external lever which was hydraulically moved. The prop went from feathered to reverse, so no adjustments like you need, and had direct drive, no reverse transmission, a bit tricky to get used to using.

      The variable pitch to allow less drag when sailing……but do you suffer “always” inefficiency with the slightly clumsy variable pitch props? To simulate sailing: Drag the Seeker with the hot tamale at full throttle and the blades flat in sailing position. Then do the same with them pitched for engine travel…….I suspect you will loose almost no speed. Less than half a knot at most. Chuck on a nice three blade fixed prop and test run at a given rpm…..I would bet that a nice efficient, fixed pitch prop will give you more efficiency (speed) at a given rpm. Be nice to have a fixed pitch on board no matter what.

      The key to safety at sea is equipment reliability. You need 100% reliability out of your mechanical equipment. Especially since you can't yet move yourself under sail safely.
      Your equipment seems to be too complex at present. You can't even drop and hoist your anchor reliably and fast to save the boat. Old saying, keep it simple, seems very appropriate for your complex propulsion mechanical systems at present.
      Lives, and the vessel itself, may depend upon the use of those systems in gale to save lives.
      Be careful. Don't be afraid to go back to proven mechanicals.

    Just a thought.... get a car backup/fwd cam. they are typically water proof. You can get a high def. one. PUT IT at the top of the mast facing/fwd and aft. you can then see the height of a bridge ahead of time.

    • @berinslaptop
      @berinslaptop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll add to that, they are dirt cheap and you could add a few around the boat for security like the engine room, entryway, stern . As well as assisting in docking the boat with a top down view(s) fwd/aft. I use those kind of cameras in quadcopter builds as flight cams. Because they are tough.

    In my humble opinion there should be a purely mechanical option to pitch the props, a shift fork and a big lever right there on the shaft. It would require someone to run down and operate it but be more dependable than hydraulic witchcraft.
