There's a theory that Abuela projected herself onto Isabela due to her granddaughter essentially looking like a duplicate of her younger self. The more Isabela fulfilled Abuela's expectations, the more it fed into Alma's biases that Isabela truly was a younger copy of herself
i really think isabela is a perfect example of how stressful the life of the "golden child" is. it seems like a good life, since we're seen in a mainly positive light, but that positive light only exists because golden children have always had to put in the extra effort to maintain their reputation, and screwing up could mean being deemed unworthy of love and/or respect by parents and teachers. it really is a luxury to be allowed room to mess up, even if you wish you'd rather be seen as perfect. i only realized my freshmen year of highschool that i don't owe anybody perfection. watching this movie really helped me understand i was moving in the right direction :)

One where they're pressured to sacrifice personal freedom for parental expectations and the family image The other is where the golden child can do no wrong and is not held accountable for their actions from the false belief that to love a child is to give them the world on a silver plate and shield them from all consequences
This is such a dumb tiny detail but I love how like, part of Isabela's "perfection" is her straight silky long hair, right? But it's not completely straight, it's curvy at the ends, and honestly I really felt that. Even when I straighten my hair it always swoops at the ends no matter how hard I try and idk...it just like. It makes me happy :)
Almost symbolic that Isabela can be all but perfect, try as she might. It also reflects how her relationship with everybody is smoothed over, save her relationship with Mirabel.
I think you have to have siblings to truly relate to what's going on here. As the golden child she felt in a choke hold of expectation, diginity and duty to the family. SHE WAS EXPECTED TO GET MARRIED AND HAVE CHILDREN and she was considered the most beautiful granddaughter. She didn't want any of this. Her powers were also limited creatively because the entire town and her grandmother preferred the perfect cultivated image she already had. No one stopped to actually ask what she wanted. throughout the film shes either posing, making flowers or dancing like a trophy. Shes NOT a trophy. Having a little sister who doesn't seem to have any of this expectation and is always assumed to make mistakes is a freedom Isabella DREAMED deep down she could have. She was closed minded and couldn't sympathize with her little sister because in her mind at least Mirabel was actually "free". And whenever mirabel would do something to disrupt the flow of the family, Isabella probably felt the pressure to work twice as hard to keep the family name in good standing with the people of the village per abuelas wishes. When she says to mirabel that shes getting in the way, shes unfortunately taking her anger out on her sister for the position she feels she has to uphold. Mirabel should have not been treated that way but the point of the movie was to show how flawed each member of the family was and how the pressure of their grandmother turned them into an unhappy version of themselves. Isabella mentioned how every time she tried to keep the perfect image she felt mirabel would "mess it up". Mirabels presssence probably provoked her true self to wanna break out, so she distanced herself to keep the mask intact. As far as im concerned, she spent her whole life not being able to have her own dreams and personality. And finally being able to release all of her honest deep down anger triggered by her sister instead of having to be perfect for once finally allowed her powers to grow and her true self to shine. During the song she thanks her self discovery to her sister and mirabel finally understands what Isabela has been going through. It had nothing to do with lack of love or care for her as a sister or being spoiled. But before isabela could truly connect with Mirabel and hear HER side of things, the grandmother Abuela interferes once again reinforcing her presence as a reminder that she has to be perfect and Mirabel is just a screw up. Her simply being in the room regresses all the development the two sisters share together. Which was the final straw causing the house to crumble into pieces. Thats when mirabel snaps and finally opens up Abuelas eyes to whats going on lol Sorry for the long rant. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Think of it this way mirabels gift is presumably what abuelas is. The heart, the empathy and the glue, the reason to keep the family together and alive and to make sure everyone has a place. Over the years abuela forgot the whole point of the family and focused only on their gifts. All the sisters, her uncle and aunt vented to her about their struggles in the family dynamic and whenever around mirabel they opened up to their true selves and thoughts. This is what happened the moment mirabel walked into the room to ask her sister for a hug. It triggered the break down of her facade and brought them closer together. Omg I'm sorry way more thoughts. In the movie Isabella barely interacts with her other sister Luisa (the strong one). Don't you think it's odd that for someone to hate her fake perfect image she had nothing but flower statues of herself in her special room? It seems to me that Isabella most likely would have felt isolated from her siblings since she was singled out for her looks and elegance. Her powers were reduced to a mere aesthetic and to make everyone happy in the room. In her song lyrics she mentions how she "practiced" her poses. She was so insecure and worried of not being perfect she spent her years practicing specific poses and making sure she looked beautiful while keeping her distance from her other siblings. When mirabel enters her room she doesn't have any animal friends or anything that tells you about her personality. Just a sea of generic flowers and a lonely bed in the center of it. At least mirabel had the house, village kids and her cousin in the nursery to keep her company.

I want to hear Julieta call the names of her two other children affectionately (not saying that she doesn't call them offscreen but we all know we wanna see it onscreen). After all, she's Pepa and Felix's first baby too so she must've gotten a lot of cuddles as a baby and now I'm curious of their adult (obviously loving but still offscreen) relationship. This definitely needs a series. “golden child” problems are so underestimated. imagine the pressure to be perfect because that's only way how you can make your family happy. because who am i but not perfect? that's the only way people would see me. they groomed you to chase perfection. that's all you know. the thing is, you want to express yourself and try something that you really want but you'll feel guilty because they are expecting you to be the best, the “role model” and you don't want them to be dissapointed. when you're struggling with others' problems then they'll add more it makes you want to explode from frustration but then you're the bad guy for loosening up. now you are ashamed of bursting out unintentionally because your problems are deemed as shallow. you also think you can trust everyone because they love you but not really because there's insecure snitches who wants to watch you break and fall. it's like being a bird in a cage.
They really aren't underestimated. They're expressed with more sympathy than those who are the neglected child. People care more for those who are privileged than those who aren't. The discourse of this movie and who "truly suffered the most" has been of Isabella, so no. Golden child struggles are not "underestimated". They've overestimated.

When she was arguing with mirabel the part where she said “I’ve been stuck being perfect my whole entire life!” it sounded like she never wanted to be perfect it kinda made me cry
I like to think they spoke about it, considering how close they seem in the movie. It didn’t seem like Dolores had any resentment towards Isabela for it. They probably both knew that they had to please their abuela.

The family madigral’s status with their gifts: Julieta: overused Pepa: restricted Bruno: restricted (as we saw he never really fully understand his visions very well because he was limited to use it) Dolores: overused Camilo: overused Isabella: restricted (as she just grow flowers when she can literally make a whole jungle) Luisa: overused (as we can see she always carry stuffs because of she just can)
I think Bruno’s could be theoretically overused. It’s not stated in cannon, but it sounds like a lot of people asked for their future to be seen. It’s possible he created his rituals (the sand and such) to deal with the intense labor it took from him. I also wonder if there’s layers to his gift like little predictions like cups about to fall over vs big predictions like Isabela’s future
Familial pressure to be perfect in many ways. If Disney makes a sequel or TV series, I'd love to see how Abuela atones for her behavior. How does the town react to the family's shifting dynamics and powers? How does the family behave towards Mirabel and each other now that they're a bit more free to express themselves beyond their gifts?
@@ahstiasummers5583 I kinda want to see them coming up with some ground rules for the townspeople when it comes to the gifts. Because to me it seemed like the town was taking advantage of them too often, getting the Madrigals to do things they could easily do themselves (i.e. Luisa with rounding up these donkeys that always seem to be escaping. Like dude, do u not know how to fix fences or improve them?? Why do you even have donkeys if they keep escaping? And why can’t you just round them up yourself? And if you can’t, can you just enlist your neighbor to help you? Why does it have to be Luisa every. Single. Time?) Maybe I’m missing something about Colombian communities (I’m white af) but it all just seemed a little too one sided to me. It just felt like the Madrigal family was doing literally EVERYTHING around town. I think part of Abuela atoning would involve her family telling her that she doesn’t have to mask her grief anymore and that it’s okay to let it out. And also for her to understand that it might take them all a while to truly forgive her (if ever) and that she will just have to be okay with that. And no doubt she might accidentally fall back into old habits (much harder to break a habit than to make one after all) but I have no doubt that her family will help her steer back in the right direction.

Louisa is best sister 10/10. Isabella, even under all that expectation was still princess-ish and mean to Mirabel, Louisa carried the same pressure and more (physically) and still manage to have a sliver of humanity
Louisa and isabela did not have the same expectations though , Isabela had to handle a lot of mental expectations because she was the golden child and always had to be perfect. Louisa (although close )wasn’t the golden child of the family and was just focused on handling most physical needs her being perfect wasn’t expected of her just always being there and ready to work. That’s why they turned out differently because isabela was watched for her behavior and how she expressed perfection while louisa was mostly watched for her strength not knowing this both took a toll on the girls both mentally and physically

Meaning all this time Isabella is capable on literally controlling all types of plants but because she is trained to be perfect she only learned how to control flowers. Of course until Mirabel made ger realize she is more than just flowers.
Isabela was treated as the golden child who could be nothing but perfect or else she would be seen as a disappoint to the family, namely Abuela. Mirabel was treated as the imperfect outcast of the family and is thrown to the side for not having a gift especially by Abuela. Often being treated as a waste of space and always noticed as the one causing problems. They both had the same problem (same spectrum just opposite sides) but neither of them were able to realize what damage it was doing to the other. I think that’s beautiful story telling once they finally realize what was actually going on in each others lives.
Imagine the prospect of doing "it" with someone you don't love, then having to raise children under the same pressure you've always had. She would've had to be the PERFECT mother, while still struggling to be the perfect child.
I disliked her at first for being rude to Mirabel, but I like that once her and Mirabel understood each other better, they got on the same page. Now both her and Mirabel are my favorite characters.
Crazy how abuela's actual goal is to make the family grow with Isabella. She's more concerned of the babies with magical abilities theyre gonna have than Isa's actualy happiness.

I love how it depicts siblings life so well. Like Isa and Mirabel always hated each other and yet cared so much for each other. They had like to be away from each other but even before Mirabel started to show care in the song, Isa still cared for her sister. Doesn't say things like "We are sisters afterall", just does it. Hugs when she wants to, helps and care and yet fight so much. This is so cute.
I'm not seeing any comments on this so ig I'll say it. Isabela's song was about a negative prophecy as well- at least the first part. She says she'll get "the life of her dreams". If the life of her dreams meant no Mariano, then she would have been much calmer towards Maribel and the situation in general in regards to the proposal. So likely, in the prophecy, he showed Mariano proposing or planning on proposing to her. Or maybe that she'd stay perfect or smt. Either way, it'd be something that she would need to pretend to like for the family. So at the end of the day, she got some bad news as well, but had to pretend like it was good news.

(Spoiler) It’s a shame. Isabella, one of the eldest of the grandchildren(22 y.o. I think) spent most of her life living for Alma. Only creating the flowers she likes and in only certain colors… Literally preparing to live the life Abuela wanted with her husband. Betrothal is so serious. I’m sure Mariano was getting the same pressure from his mother too. I’m glad Isa brakes free and starts digging her own roots. She’s my favorite.
I think Mariano was in love with the IDEA of Isabela, given that he later tells Mirabel that he just has so much love inside and he falls for Dolores pretty quickly; he’s a romantic at heart (he apparently writes poetry?). I guess Abuela had also assumed Isabela would be her successor and become the holder of the candle in the future

i really think isabela is a perfect example of how stressful the life of the "golden child" is. it seems like a good life, since we're seen in a mainly positive light, but that positive light only exists because golden children have always had to put in the extra effort to maintain their reputation, and screwing up could mean being deemed unworthy of love and/or respect by parents and teachers. it really is a luxury to be allowed room to mess up, even if you wish you'd rather be seen as perfect.
i only realized my freshmen year of highschool that i don't owe anybody perfection. watching this movie really helped me understand i was moving in the right direction :)

This is such a dumb tiny detail but I love how like, part of Isabela's "perfection" is her straight silky long hair, right? But it's not completely straight, it's curvy at the ends, and honestly I really felt that. Even when I straighten my hair it always swoops at the ends no matter how hard I try and idk...it just like. It makes me happy :)
Almost symbolic that Isabela can be all but perfect, try as she might. It also reflects how her relationship with everybody is smoothed over, save her relationship with Mirabel.

I think you have to have siblings to truly relate to what's going on here. As the golden child she felt in a choke hold of expectation, diginity and duty to the family. SHE WAS EXPECTED TO GET MARRIED AND HAVE CHILDREN and she was considered the most beautiful granddaughter. She didn't want any of this. Her powers were also limited creatively because the entire town and her grandmother preferred the perfect cultivated image she already had. No one stopped to actually ask what she wanted. throughout the film shes either posing, making flowers or dancing like a trophy. Shes NOT a trophy. Having a little sister who doesn't seem to have any of this expectation and is always assumed to make mistakes is a freedom Isabella DREAMED deep down she could have. She was closed minded and couldn't sympathize with her little sister because in her mind at least Mirabel was actually "free". And whenever mirabel would do something to disrupt the flow of the family, Isabella probably felt the pressure to work twice as hard to keep the family name in good standing with the people of the village per abuelas wishes. When she says to mirabel that shes getting in the way, shes unfortunately taking her anger out on her sister for the position she feels she has to uphold. Mirabel should have not been treated that way but the point of the movie was to show how flawed each member of the family was and how the pressure of their grandmother turned them into an unhappy version of themselves. Isabella mentioned how every time she tried to keep the perfect image she felt mirabel would "mess it up". Mirabels presssence probably provoked her true self to wanna break out, so she distanced herself to keep the mask intact.
As far as im concerned, she spent her whole life not being able to have her own dreams and personality. And finally being able to release all of her honest deep down anger triggered by her sister instead of having to be perfect for once finally allowed her powers to grow and her true self to shine. During the song she thanks her self discovery to her sister and mirabel finally understands what Isabela has been going through. It had nothing to do with lack of love or care for her as a sister or being spoiled. But before isabela could truly connect with Mirabel and hear HER side of things, the grandmother Abuela interferes once again reinforcing her presence as a reminder that she has to be perfect and Mirabel is just a screw up. Her simply being in the room regresses all the development the two sisters share together. Which was the final straw causing the house to crumble into pieces.
Thats when mirabel snaps and finally opens up Abuelas eyes to whats going on lol Sorry for the long rant. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
Think of it this way mirabels gift is presumably what abuelas is. The heart, the empathy and the glue, the reason to keep the family together and alive and to make sure everyone has a place. Over the years abuela forgot the whole point of the family and focused only on their gifts. All the sisters, her uncle and aunt vented to her about their struggles in the family dynamic and whenever around mirabel they opened up to their true selves and thoughts. This is what happened the moment mirabel walked into the room to ask her sister for a hug. It triggered the break down of her facade and brought them closer together.
Omg I'm sorry way more thoughts. In the movie Isabella barely interacts with her other sister Luisa (the strong one). Don't you think it's odd that for someone to hate her fake perfect image she had nothing but flower statues of herself in her special room? It seems to me that Isabella most likely would have felt isolated from her siblings since she was singled out for her looks and elegance. Her powers were reduced to a mere aesthetic and to make everyone happy in the room. In her song lyrics she mentions how she "practiced" her poses. She was so insecure and worried of not being perfect she spent her years practicing specific poses and making sure she looked beautiful while keeping her distance from her other siblings. When mirabel enters her room she doesn't have any animal friends or anything that tells you about her personality. Just a sea of generic flowers and a lonely bed in the center of it. At least mirabel had the house, village kids and her cousin in the nursery to keep her company.

The discourse of this movie and who "truly suffered the most" has been of Isabella, so no. Golden child struggles are not "underestimated". They've overestimated.

Maybe I’m missing something about Colombian communities (I’m white af) but it all just seemed a little too one sided to me. It just felt like the Madrigal family was doing literally EVERYTHING around town.
I think part of Abuela atoning would involve her family telling her that she doesn’t have to mask her grief anymore and that it’s okay to let it out. And also for her to understand that it might take them all a while to truly forgive her (if ever) and that she will just have to be okay with that. And no doubt she might accidentally fall back into old habits (much harder to break a habit than to make one after all) but I have no doubt that her family will help her steer back in the right direction.

Louisa and isabela did not have the same expectations though , Isabela had to handle a lot of mental expectations because she was the golden child and always had to be perfect. Louisa (although close )wasn’t the golden child of the family and was just focused on handling most physical needs her being perfect wasn’t expected of her just always being there and ready to work. That’s why they turned out differently because isabela was watched for her behavior and how she expressed perfection while louisa was mostly watched for her strength not knowing this both took a toll on the girls both mentally and physically

Meaning all this time Isabella is capable on literally controlling all types of plants but because she is trained to be perfect she only learned how to control flowers. Of course until Mirabel made ger realize she is more than just flowers.
Isabela was treated as the golden child who could be nothing but perfect or else she would be seen as a disappoint to the family, namely Abuela.
Mirabel was treated as the imperfect outcast of the family and is thrown to the side for not having a gift especially by Abuela. Often being treated as a waste of space and always noticed as the one causing problems.
They both had the same problem (same spectrum just opposite sides) but neither of them were able to realize what damage it was doing to the other. I think that’s beautiful story telling once they finally realize what was actually going on in each others lives.

Isabela's song was about a negative prophecy as well- at least the first part. She says she'll get "the life of her dreams". If the life of her dreams meant no Mariano, then she would have been much calmer towards Maribel and the situation in general in regards to the proposal. So likely, in the prophecy, he showed Mariano proposing or planning on proposing to her. Or maybe that she'd stay perfect or smt. Either way, it'd be something that she would need to pretend to like for the family.
So at the end of the day, she got some bad news as well, but had to pretend like it was good news.

I’m sure Mariano was getting the same pressure from his mother too. I’m glad Isa brakes free and starts digging her own roots. She’s my favorite.
I think Mariano was in love with the IDEA of Isabela, given that he later tells Mirabel that he just has so much love inside and he falls for Dolores pretty quickly; he’s a romantic at heart (he apparently writes poetry?). I guess Abuela had also assumed Isabela would be her successor and become the holder of the candle in the future
