I've had one of these for 26 years now and I only just cleaned the pots a few weeks ago. Other than that, never even had to open it up! Great amp!

What is the difference between the 8100 and the VS 100??

Apparently, that question is asked a lot. However, I do not know the answer. I think they were pretty close to the same type amp. Maybe something about the 12AX7 being run differently through the channels of each of those amps to create a slightly different tone. ???

I think it's the tube pre amp in the 8100.

Hi, these have different PCBs, the VS100 has separate volume knobs for Overdrive 1/2, separate reverb knobs for Clean/OD
and in the power output stage comes with BDV65 instead of the original transistors made by Marshall (that the 8100 has)
The VS100 has headphone output, the 8100 doesn't, and the VS100 comes with ToneShift for the clean channel and PowerDimension
      for the Overdrive channel.

The pre-amp tube in the VS100 works for both clean and od channels, in the 8100 the tube only works for the od channel, meaning the clean channel for the 8100 is completely solid state. That's the main difference. If you're looking to save like a houndred dollars go and buy the VS100, it's the same amp but arguably better, the only reason it doesn't cost as much is because Chuck Schuldiner used the 8100, so the price just because of that fact gets flung up.

@@ilikepotatoes1345 The vs100 is a great amp, I run mine in the od1 channel with the gain turned down, warm "tube-y" clean tone with surprising headroom

Have you used this head with a full band? I've heard the sound quality goes down a bit when played at high volumes - particularly metal. It gets fizzy.

Yeah, I would agree that if you are going for a heavy, high gain, metal sound, that this amp - like any other solid state amp - is not going to hold a tight sound at really high volumes. A good all tube amp is just the way to go for high volume and tight tone; however, at a much higher cost. With that said, I have mic'd different cabinets with this head and had pretty decent results for playing live bluesy stuff. But my main use for this head was always for home practicing and some studio recording.

Actually Chuck Schuldiner of Death used these live in stadium venues. Check some YT video of Death playing Dynamo in The Netherlands.
