- Hi Everyone, We have noticed recently that Bree is looking a little skinny, so we are wondering why, or if, she is losing weight! We are also doing a little horse training session with her. Then Jim is sawing lumber with no help and showing how he is able to a lot of work in the sawmill by himself.

My pony was in the house the other day. I generally stop by the back door and get em a treat when we get back from a ride, drive, or walk. I usually stop them coming in but was not quick enough that time! They do get very familiar if you keep them at home

Jim, has taken Bree in the house I think if i brought one of the animals in the house he would throw an absolute wobbly he allows me to have a dog and a cat in the house but that is as far as it goes with him. He is not an animal person but i love them.
Folks, I can't wait to see what Bree is going to look like as a mature logging horse. Such a fine looking bunch they all are. And Mr. Skip; he is constant motion and filling out as well. Thanks.

Bree’s mane is so pretty, like Mom’s and Dad’s :-). She’s a looker! Enjoyed all the creative sawmill camera work.
Reasons why I like your channel. Jim. Brenda. Horses logging, plowing, pigs, etc. Training the young horses. Pulling contests Wood mill (you explain things so thoroughly). Brenda's projects, cooking, chickens, etc. Skippy. William and his projects. Your other Amish neighbors (It's great to see the old ways). And so many other farm ways with horses. But it's nice to introduce technology when needed. And of course, Trudy, Abby, and the grandchildren.

Good Day Jim and Brenda,, Bree is doing really well with limited time you've had time out your busy schedule to work with her . She's very obedient to and reponds well to you on the front porch entry and exit . Congrats on her stepping into the trailer as well. She's gained 8 lbs from her last weigh in. . Your probably right on the growth spurt issue . I agree with you to take a fecal sample to check on the worm situation as well. I would also lift up Bree's horse feed ration for a few months after you get the worm test results back.
Those Suffolk Punch colts are absolutely beautiful. They have really bulked up.
They are a very sturdy breed and so quiet i just love them. Originally from Suffolk in the UK, they were on the endangered list a long time ago now the numbers are climbing i am sure Jim using Suffolk's is helping the breed come back They are smaller than the Clydesdales and the Shire but they make good farm horses for sure. Their colour is stunning and Bree being half Suffolk and Half Belgian she is going to be stunning when she gets older. I said to Jim he should start a new breeding line the Belgian Punch. A consult with the vet on Bree would be in order just to be safe. And a fecal worm test again too. Since she is growing so fast as another viewer suggested a vitamin and or supplement would probably be a good idea. Maybe feeding her alone so she has a chance to eat her share of food also - Uncle Earl may just be eating her share.😄

Bree is like my 4 year old granddaughter! She has to study the new thing and figure out how she is going to do it, then just does it. But in her own way in her own time. 😇
When was Bree de-wormed the last time? In fall? there may have been eggs left !

It was so wonderful to see Princess Bree Joy as she has grown. Love her color of her coat and the mane is beautiful. Your training of Bree was great to see and Skippy some what staying her distance from Bree as remembering what her Momma Lady did and not wanting to get kicked.

Bree is tucked up, a little ribby, and gutty. I say worms, always affects the youngsters more.
I had a little stud for a while, and developed a policy which requires some smaller paddocks but totally solved the worm issues.
If you have to worm, shift. If you have to shift, worm. Takes about 3 weeks for worm larvae in the grass to die out. Works a treat, we had no worm issues.
Worms not from the barn, but when turned out on the grass. When you move to a clean paddock, treat for worms the night before. Yeah, I know that big paddock back of the barnyard is handy and they can come and go, but there lies your worm larvae.
Bravo Bree! It is all about trust, and Jim's horses all trust that whatever Jim asks will be safe.

@@aliceskewthorpe8991 G'day. I chuck a bit of Aussie knowhow Jim's way, and notice he soaks a bit of it up. Sometimes Jim's approach is exactly what I would do. He does invite opinions, knowing we all have different experience, and horse-talk is a sure way of gaining knowledge. No-one knows it all.
Brea may be in her gawky teenage years when her bones are stretching and less nutrition is going to muscle. She looks great. Another thing, you've been dealing with young males more in recent years and females may develop differently. 😊 Love all your videos.
@@cherylwarner2623 When Jim purchased Duke and Earl as weaners they were in a very similar condition, and winter rough. We know they all get as much hay as they can eat, and I have never seen better care.
When that Spring grass comes out she will blossom as if overnight.

Her hips look higher than her withers right now...growth spurt. Couldn't hurt to have her checked for worms again. It's warming up a little so the cycle begins again. She's very smart...hasn't forgotten a thing! Bree climbed in that trailer like she had been loading for years once she made up her mind. lol You both are doing a fine job with Bree!
Bree is looking good Jim and responding well to your training schedule. The wood cutting technique you have developed is well refined and illiminates any unnecessary struggle and strain while getting the best cuts from the various logs sizes.
I always wondered what a ferrier was looking for. Wish we still had our 19 hand Belgian. Ya, No Jim you're no slacker hahaha.😅😊❤😊

Jim, There is always a better way of doing things some you may not have even considered. I hear you about the Age thing. I just turned 57 and i am just getting into having my own farm at the moment. We just moved in in October 2023 so then there was the mad rush to get the house in reasonable shape before guests start coming to our Christmas Party then Christmas itself then the new year came and on my birthday (Jan 14) i had my first 4 animals arrive, Two Pigmy Goats and two Miniature horses all are from a rescue which was run by a friend of a friend of ours. She has two baby pigs too i may be interested in getting but i need a couple of full sized horses which i am looking at from another rescue that give standardbred race horses another job. Too many horses are being bought up by kill buyers and put into auction houses and shipped from the States to Canada and Mexico to go to be slaughtered. I know it is part of farm life to expect some animals to go to be slaughtered which i do not have a problem with but i just don't understand why horses have to go that way. I will be honest with you horses are my passion they have been since i was little so when i saw your channel i thought you could teach me more than what i already know you have been an excellent teach Jim. I have learned so much from you just watching your very broad range of talents from sawing trees down and taking them out by horse and then there is the saw mill and the different wood there is. I don't think i could tell them apart i am a bit sticky on that part but the plowing with horses and cutting grass with them, you do so much with horses. Then there was the much anticipated birth of Bree. Frozen semen from Baron the castration and the then the cancer thing. I don.t know how vets do it all. One of my favourite Vet shows was back in the old days and it was a much publicized book series as well as a TV Show in the UK where i was born and raised The life and times of James Harriett. I think it was set in the 1940's ish. It was a good TV show i used to watch it as a kid. Everything you do is hard grafting Jim its all hard work i don't know how you do it either if i am honest. I am glad Baron is going to be ok from his cancer and no more problems arise. I don't think Bree is in bad condition quite the opposite she is thriving she is starting to loose her winter fur so that will shrink her down some and she is still growing she must be 2 years old now going on three???? She did a great job getting into the trailer has she seen the other horses loading up but i am sure she had heard the noise of the trailer as the horses are loaded up. so that is probably why she didn't spook as much. Bree is still very young she will grow into her own. she is doing really well on her training and she is not yet old enough to start pulling carts just yet so she isn't building up any muscle mass like the rest of the horses she is rather short compared to her Mumma her Daddy and her Uncles but i think she is doing very well. She retains what she has learned. I have to train a miniature horse who has been handled and lead around but the boy has no respect for fencing electrified or not the only thing that keeps him in is a chain link fence which might be a good investment on my part. He has never been on a lunge line until recently and he just goes round and round kick and buck and throwing his head around like a wild child. He is 7 years old and he has zero respect for anything and come feeding time i have been teaching him to back up he is responding to that ok but as soon as he hears me coming into the barn he starts pawing the ground so i tap his leg and say no and then i back him up. is there something i could do different that will make him listen. I shouldn't ask it of you as you have so much on your plate but if anyone else has any suggestions in the comments i would love to hear from you i need all the help i can get its all new to me but i will train him without force or beatings as horses above all deserve respect. I will say one thing he is the first horse i have raised my voice to. he could test the patience of a saint that boy. always up to mischief. Anyways Jim have a great weekend. I would loved to come out and give you a hand with somethings around the farm or maybe Brenda needs a helping hand in the garden Spring is almost here the Snow is gone even though we had the same squall you had a few days ago that just came out of no where. pg HERE. Jim, you did get some really cool shots, especially in the sawmill. I think Bree trying to keep up with Duke and Earl who are building more muscles is causing her to burn more calories than if she was in a field with a 1-year-old colt. Like a girl raised in a family with older brothers. Their stride is 2 times as big. She takes 5 strides for their 1. I had an older brother 6'3" just walking downtown to a ball game I'd get exhausted.

Sometimes youngsters go through growth spurts that skin them out! No amount of chow can keep meat on their bones during this period. I'm sure you've got your eye on her all the time! It's really funny when one end grows faster than the other!
And when the two ends are even then that's good.

Bree is such a beautiful girl!!! When Lady has her new foal I think it will be a spittin' image of Bree!! What a beautiful team they will be! As wet and muddy as it's been there, the parasite load may be pretty high for all the horses. I've always felt like baby animals haven't built up a strong resistance to fend off parasites as they can as mature animals (whether it's tiny kittens/puppies or equine/bovine)...just my thinking😊
You may want to wait till she sheds out to better see her condition. She's well muscled and may just be getting plenty of exercise with 2 uncles to play with. We always kept a mineral block available for our mares and foals. Since she had a heavy worm load you might ask the vet about a supplement. The rest of the herd looks great. Glad to see Ken back to working. Watched a horse rescue where they had to put one down because he didn't get taken care of. Like you do Ken. Thanks for showing how to care for and respect your horses. Love watching.
As a young growing horse, would she benefit with higher quality hay and/or more grain? Also,, do the horses receive supplemental vitamins, minerals?

Jim I'm not a horse owner/ user in any way but my mind goes to child hood. Could bree be losing her baby fat and not getting the exercise she needs to put muscle on ( being turned out but not being made to walk/ run to build actual muscle ).

Brea may have tested good after worming her but the eggs of worm may still have been in her gut. I'm pretty sure they recommend re-worming a horse one month after initial application in order to kill all the worms.

This could be one of your most interesting to me. There's a little grooming, training, and I thought of a challenge for Bree. Walk her into one of the little sheds for a different sound and you may have to back her out of it. But one of the most interesting in the sawing. You would talk about what the end goal is before the saw is actually cutting. I don't know if that is good to others but it gave be enough to think about that I almost forgot to hit the like and make my usual comment. sorry for the length.

PG here, TH-cam took down my channel again. I use it just to leave comments. It wa a mean thing someone trying to hurt me who watches everything. I just want to make sure you got my comment of having bree run with the older horses not the ones with all that energy running through them. She is burning through calories. I gave the example of walking down town with a brother in a rush who is 6'3'. He is walking I am running to keep up.

Is earl eating her share of food
It seems like alot of my yearlings get a little thin and gawky looking. I think they just put alot of energy into growing taller. Worming and spring grass always resolve it for me.
Earl is looking Chonky! So thick and majestic, like a baroque horse. You should roach his mane, he would look so cool!
you have pretty good strength
Besides checking on the parasite issue, Bree doesn't look like she is getting the proper nutrition. I don't know what kind of grain she is getting but she would probably benefit from an analysis from Purina horse feeds. We were old school for a long time and figured that straight grains and other basic feeds were good enough. That was until we got a filly that starting having all sorts of problems with weight issues and swelling in her joints, called Apophysitis. Our vet suggested calling Purina horse feeds because they do a lot of research and testing on there feeds and have representatives that can help you come up with a feed program specifically for Bree. We switiched to Purina products about 25 years ago. Since then all of our youngsters have grown up great with no weight issues. Our senior horses were given what they needed based on age, teeth condition and other issues.
Jim, would you have time someday to name the pieces of harness for both field work and cart work. You might have different names to those people in Ireland used, I would still like to know. Like the patience and passion you and your family have for what you do, thank you.
Hmm, I think maybe Bree should be checked for worms or parasites something is not adding up. Oh, and she backs up very well way better the Earl was last week. Thank you for being a farm that gives care attention to your animals with so many other things to do. Bless you.
My ancestors will use aspen logs as a deworming agent for horses. Their horses will nibble the bark of logs. My dad tells me, the horses have a shining coat.🐎
