  • In this episode of Cal’s Week in Review: In the Field, MeatEater’s Director of Conservation, Ryan Callaghan heads to Tennessee to see how the recent addition of invasive Asian carp to the ecosystem is affecting fishing, recreation, and the environment. With the help of the TWRA, he meets with biologists, commercial processors, outfitters, and even tries his hand at noodling for flathead catfish. When it’s all said and done, they put this invasive newcomer up against two southern favorites-crappie and flathead-tune in to find out which fish wins the taste test.

    So sad no one is mass producing these fish into fillets/nuggets for schools, colleges, military institutions and correctional facilities. It would surely help with the carp problem and the agencies would have better food

    I remember my dad was on strike,we spent the summer fishing an we never turned these down. When you don't have a paycheck you'll eat anything. The Chinese love these, all you have to do is try it,the bones are the worst. Hungry people don't complain.

    They're not just 'decent eating'. They are excellent table fare. They put catfish, tilapia, and any other common farmed fish to absolute shame. The pin bones are a hassle, but it's worth the hassle if you need some fish for the freezer.

    Good episode, and I have been waiting for this one since I saw the Instagram posts last year about it. Love it when Cal comes to TN! What I have always found interesting when I have tried to introduce people to new types of fish, they always talk about how it has a fishy taste or weird texture. Although, these same people love catfish which has a very unique texture and quite often a distinct fishy flavor. I think so often it just boils down to a mental state where some are hesitant to try something new and go into it with a negative outlook from the start. Keep the Cal content rolling!

    • @mthompson
      @mthompson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's not so much a bruise as it is an abrasion...their lips have bony pads lined with hundreds of tiny sharp recurved teeth....when they shake their head with your hand in their mouth, it's like slapping your arm on a running belt sander with 100grit paper on it.

    Take the red, fatty tissue off just about any fish and they taste pretty good. I've had walleye that hasn't tasted good because whoever fixed it left that fatty tissue on it. I've had people tell me white bass is gross, but I grew up eating white bass and I love it, long as the red fatty tissue is removed from the meat. I'm sure the carp is no different.

    I'm in the camp of being told that carp are crap / Trash fish. I've never tried one, but we have a ton of them out here in Lake Powell and people bow fish for them to get rid of them. Is it just asain carp that are going to be as good as described in this video or should I try taking one of the carp out of Lake Powell and filleting it up and eating it. Powell has all sorts of other delicious fish in it already (Striper, Small Mouth, Crappie, Channel Cats, Walleye).

    I'm confused, he excuses himself at the end of the video to eat carp, but the voice-over was clearly added in post... so did he sit on those filet's until he was editing and then took the time to add the voice-over before eating the fish? This all just seems so unrealistic to me, I'm quitting fishing because of this.
