Well I have to say. That was a surprise and a joy to watch. Didn't see you folks doing something like this but holy crap it was good! Hope you do more of this kind of content.
Cal probably upped his life insurance before this challenge. His first boat looked like an 18 wheeler smacked a buffalo standing in a willow patch. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 This boat race had everything, including MULTIPLE sinkings !!!
wow you guys made that look really hard! why not sharpen sticks,,, stick them in the ground in a circle and fold them over each other! weave vine and cut off stick at ground flip over attach hide! oh well it looks like you had fun and it was fun to watch
I think if cal put the final ring down on the ground, laid his boat on top then shimmied that ring up as high as he could get it, it would have held the hide and tied his boat together.
At first i thought this "lame" but you made it "game", very funny. I salute the Native Peoples of North America for showing the "White Man" how its done. This show often pays homage to those that were here first, Thanks!
It's 2024, how is there not a way to get get of the overlapping audio from multiple mics? Drives me insane listening to audio from one mic on top of another mic.
This is so epic. I've always been fascinated when reading about bull boats and wondered what they actually looked like in use. Thanks for bringing history to life!
You guys are doing it backwards. We build it like a sweatlodge - stick the ends in the ground and form a dome, then weave it all together and tie it where it needs tying. Then throw the hide on, stretch it to fit, then flip her over and finish securing the hide.
Good effort guys. Here in Ireland we call them corricals. Same boat just originally covered in seal skins, then canvas with the outside covered in tar. Steve & Cal, you need to learn the sculling stroke, that's what was used to power the boat.
Smoking a cigar, sipping on rum and coke and laughing at you guys, not a bad way to end the working week! Tell Steve if he catches a paddlefish off his yak not to throw out the caviar, I'm sure clay would want it 😂
I'm not telling cal that shit. He can figure it out on his own😂. Who else says cal not junior in there head everytime steve says cal. Ps if you know you know😮😢
😂 In Norse mythology there's a squirrel named Ratatoskr. His whole existence is to run up and down the world tree (Yggdrasil) and conveys insults and information between the eagle who's perched at the top, and the dragon gnawing at the roots. Neuharth is Ratatoskr in the video😂
Brilliant. Can New Zealand put in an entry for 2025? We've got history with the America's Cup (and plenty of possum skins). Plus I've never fished the Gallatin.
I don’t think many people have realized this, but this year is the 200th anniversary of Jim Bridger’s float in a bull boat down the Bear River to the Great Salt Lake. Maybe the next race should be on the Bear and shouldn’t have to wait for next year. That whole video I was thinking I could build such a better bull boat lol.
this is entertaining, funny and mesmerizing all at once. Amazing skills and the historical knowledge too. Cant wait for next year. Hopefully there will be more participant and a buffet of bison culinary dishes. CHeers Guys!!! been watching meat eater for as long as i can remember.
“What’s the problem Cal?”
“Mostly the boat”
I think if you look at all the good that Steven Rinella and meateater as a whole have done, the best thing they have brought to humanity is Callahan.
This is incredible. Top tier piece of content by the MeatEater Crew. Steve fishing was hilarious.
I agree 100%
Agreed
Agreed.
I love that dude who is instigating the F out of Steve and Cal.
Cal still paddling with water "technically im still in the boat" up to his chest had me in tears😂😂😂.lol
The Meateater crew has the perfect blend of personalities.
Nature, history, competition and all the laughs. Meateater gold here.
Well I have to say. That was a surprise and a joy to watch. Didn't see you folks doing something like this but holy crap it was good! Hope you do more of this kind of content.
I love how Spencer keeps walking back and forth goading each of them.
Best MEATEATER content in a while! Give us more!
Cal probably upped his life insurance before this challenge. His first boat looked like an 18 wheeler smacked a buffalo standing in a willow patch. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 This boat race had everything, including MULTIPLE sinkings !!!
"I still don't like all the talking." Right there with you, Steve.
Great content! I've heard of hides being used for canoes but never heard of a Bull Boat. Super cool to see how it actually worked!
Never seen Spencer before, only ever heard him on the podcast. He looks exactly like his voice sounds, to a frankly uncanny level.
Steve was setting proud floating down by himself all smiles
Please do more of this stuff. Incredible.
That was hilarious!😂😂😂😂 Thank you MeatEater
Love a good Steve n Cal video 😂
Spencer ties this whole thing together playing devils advocate 😂.
Definitely need too make more of these, if possible.
Great idea guys, always been fascinated about this stuff. Cal was a good sport about it. Also lost it when steve started fishing.
Spencer is such a great host. Doesn't matter what project he's working on.
Steve and cal. Lets go!!
More of this please! What a great video.
Steve is the ultimate pioneer.
Damn steve put on a clinic
Came for smooth voiced trivia, stayed around for exploit boat race. If you're not cheating you're not racing, Roger Penske.
Things get exciting at around the 15 minute mark
Awesome experiment. This was great
Steve is a trip 😂😂
Fantastic
Super impressive by Steve. My attempt wouldn’t be half as good as Cal’s so really great work by both even tho Cal sank
I could watch a lot more like this
Love everything about this except it appears it will only happen 1/year!!!! Steve really is a sore winner tho…😂
Those shots of Steve fishing will forever be in my mind
Steve won but cal had more fun. That's a tie to me.
Fantastic content

America 😊 love it feel more like a man just watching came away with some ideas thank y'all for sharing can't wait for the 2025 will it be a comeback ?
They max their rage meter out very early. I wonder if their off screen rage meter is the same lol. Entertaining vid
amazing
I can say Cal is the Champion
Champion of swimming! 😅
These fingers weren't made for braiding, they were made for pounding nails
I feel like the 2025 race should include more competitors
At first i thought this "lame" but you made it "game", very funny. I salute the Native Peoples of North America
for showing the "White Man" how its done. This show often pays homage to those that were here first, Thanks!
Steve should have fly fished while going down the river what a show it just came into the video while saying this oh and land a five pound rainbow 😂
More of these pleeeeease!
LMBO!!!
👍🇧🇷
Love cal.. miss jani
Is Steve rocking a rat tail?
Hey Spence. Stick to hosting trivia, I mistook you for a buffalo.
Edit: Actually, quit that too.
Submarine Cal. 😂
Luke of Outdoor Boys would have won. 😂
It's 2024, how is there not a way to get get of the overlapping audio from multiple mics? Drives me insane listening to audio from one mic on top of another mic.
Caltanic…
Cal 2.0😂
Ray Mears did it so much better lol
Steve knocking the gopro off his helmet was the most Steve thing thats ever happened to.
😂😂 lost it when Steve started fishing
Cal’s Rage Meter 😂 followed up by sinking was worth the watch.
THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN TO WATCH, LOVED IT!!!!!! Cal chest deep at the start was hilarious!
This is so epic. I've always been fascinated when reading about bull boats and wondered what they actually looked like in use. Thanks for bringing history to life!
You couldn't of picked 2 better people for this competition! Lol this was awesome
"Maybe try to want to" that had me howling
“Is there a specific problem you encountered”?
“Yea mostly the boat”
lol
Steve's slow and steady approach was great to watch. He THRIVED on the water
You guys are doing it backwards. We build it like a sweatlodge - stick the ends in the ground and form a dome, then weave it all together and tie it where it needs tying. Then throw the hide on, stretch it to fit, then flip her over and finish securing the hide.
I laughed my a$$ off Cal....sorry....you make a better submarine than a battleship....hohoho! hehehe!
Good effort guys. Here in Ireland we call them corricals. Same boat just originally covered in seal skins, then canvas with the outside covered in tar. Steve & Cal, you need to learn the sculling stroke, that's what was used to power the boat.
Not sure what his current title is but I think Spencer is the official meateater competition commissioner. More competitions in the future!
Absolutely incredible showing this skill. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a episode of meat eater.
Smoking a cigar, sipping on rum and coke and laughing at you guys, not a bad way to end the working week! Tell Steve if he catches a paddlefish off his yak not to throw out the caviar, I'm sure clay would want it 😂
This is content I'm here for. Hahaha well done
Proves why Steve is the face of Meateater
i laughed hard at this
More
That was hilarious 😂😂😂 thank you meateater!
I'm not telling cal that shit. He can figure it out on his own😂. Who else says cal not junior in there head everytime steve says cal. Ps if you know you know😮😢
Awesome idea greater video. Thanx!
Oh my gosh this is freakin awesome😂😂
😂 In Norse mythology there's a squirrel named Ratatoskr. His whole existence is to run up and down the world tree (Yggdrasil) and conveys insults and information between the eagle who's perched at the top, and the dragon gnawing at the roots.
Neuharth is Ratatoskr in the video😂
Probably one of the best episode produced. There was excitement, drama, danger, and even a happy ending....for steve...Nice work!
lol Steve strikes me as the type that has to win at everything he does 😂
Good stuff guys, we’d love more of this
I think I can safely speak for Steve’s entire fan base when I say we would love to see him in more comical outdoor situations such as this one.
Found the boat. 500 bucks is the starting bid.
Brilliant. Can New Zealand put in an entry for 2025? We've got history with the America's Cup (and plenty of possum skins). Plus I've never fished the Gallatin.

Cal Worthington and his dog Spot = 1970s Auto commercial So California = So cal ?
this is entertaining, funny and mesmerizing all at once. Amazing skills and the historical knowledge too. Cant wait for next year. Hopefully there will be more participant and a buffet of bison culinary dishes. CHeers Guys!!! been watching meat eater for as long as i can remember.
This boat design is much older then 1790, these boats are dated back to 100BC
The Irish call these "currach's"
Cal doesn't have enough surface area for his body weight, IMHO
Next race this needs to be full staff event. Go full on with more time. Maybe competitors can only choose like 3 out of 10 availabe tools/supplies.
Cool show but please don’t trying this show by making it any other competition show. Keep it real
OMG lol that's was awesome
21:25
I disagree Cal. I think the boat was just fine.
It was the water that’s was a problem.
It did just fine until it got near the river.
Awesome! I knew steve would win since he has nade ine before years back, but some meateater bushcraft Olympics would he a cool series!
That was so, so good. More competitions using traditional methods please!!!
Awesome concept. Seems alowing the vessel to dry would produce a hardened sturdy vessel for many uses.
That was a most beautiful thing when it worked, the most woeful thing when it didn’t.
