    This is a great video. This distinguishes the difference between Sikhs and Punjabis. Some people are born into a Sikh family and don't practise Sikhi, but think their Sikh when infact their Punjabi. So they follow cultural norms (in Punjabi culture) and feel they need to get married in a gurdwara and then cut their hair and beard and then have a party with meat and alcohol.

      ***** Hi, yes I do agree with it. I feel alot of people are making up their own religion and are it studying the real Sikhi from the Guru Granth Ji Sahib. What is your view?

    Respect to Basics Of Sikhi. Sometimes it has to be told like this. The Anand Karaj - Blissful Union Of The Soul is The Gurus ceremony, written by The Gurus. The Sikh - Khalsa bride / groom have the honour to participate in this ceremony of The Gurus, giving their 'head' to The Gurus and accepting the Hukam - Command of The Gurus.

    This was very insightful and raised a lot of understanding for me. I am married to my wife who is punjabi, and is sikh. She gives me clothes, food, and has me do ceremonies to take pictures like you said, but whenever I asked what these things are or what it's for she says she doesn't really know. She wants me to come to temple with her dressed in the pyjama, and cover my head and I bow in front after donating. then i sit and listen to the shabad and all that but really don't understand. She tells me she never forces me for anything, but I also feel that if I don't participate it is tooken a bit personally by her. And personally I have felt a bit of shame because, I do respect what I know of gurbani. I suppose what I'm asking is, I am interested and have often felt very humbled at what i have uncovered myself in learning about sikhil. but i don't know if I am being offensive if that makes sense.

    • @basicsofsikhi
      @basicsofsikhi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Sebastien, thanks for your comment. It doesn't sound at all offensive what you're doing. By watching the videos and learning about Gurbani, you'll enjoy that Gurdwara experience more every time and whether or not you become a Sikh, at least that time in the Gurdwara and all the rituals will make sense. Just keep learning and Guruji will support you with what to learn.

  • @stoicanimals

    This was real talk. I feel a few points need to be addressed though. I hope these get covered.
    1. Why has interfaith marriages been allowed to go on for so long? Is this change to back to the purist form going to be more detrimental to the Sikh sangat (I.e drop in visitors)
    2. If the media reporting is true, and the protests have been blocked with intimidating practices (covering faces) how does this make us look? You cannot blame people for saying this is extremist behaviour. The counter argument cannot be that the media has misreported. There has to be an element of truth to this. How do you protest properly with decorum and allow innocent worshippers into house of God.
    3. The point made is about a white person marrying in. Based on the 4 things you mentioned every Sikh should do to me says that even if your born a Sikh you shouldn't be allowed to do the Anand Karaj unless your Amrit shak. On that basis all weddings should be protested. It feels like double standards here and also feels like you get a free pass if your born Sikh.

    • @srigupta184

      your points are 100% true. all of them. The information in this video is one step in the right direction.

      Sandeep
      1. People were not aware of Sikh faith teachings pre-Internet era as they are now. Knowledge is multiplied now. Also outer-faith marriage and the insulting of the Anand karrage has had history of people protesting against it, cases from early as 1970s in Canada and USA. Even in 80s and 90s especially. Not new. Only it seems to be new because of more media highlights.
      2. Whats so intimidating about covering your face? ALL types of peps who protest cover their face nowdays. Its the norm. If someone is scared of A Sikh chanting vaheguru with his/her face covered then its their own problem.
      3. Most if not all Sikhs agree that non-baptized Sikhs have the same right as a baptized Sikh to have AK ceremony - plus some of the greatest Sikh historical figures were not baptized during their marriage (and even after)

    Well said. I think that part of the trouble these days is that with everyone having access to an "instant audience" with various forms of social media, they are free to express their opinions & sometimes promote themselves as knowledgeable on various topics, when in reality they are far from knowledgeable or even qualified in the areas where they are making comments. And others reading those comments are often foolish enough to take those unknowledgeable comments to heart, as though they are true - instead of doing what they should really do, & go to someone who is properly qualified on the topic to seek their educated & qualified opinion. It just goes to show that one should never believe what one hears on social media, unless you know that it comes from a truly reliable, knowledgeable, & qualified source.

    • @kiratkaur2141
      @kiratkaur2141 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bhenji I would go one step further and say that ideally, we should go to the source itself because even someone properly qualified can be biased or flat out wrong.

    I read somewhere that the Guru Jis did not want their pictures to be hung on the walls and did not want heir biographies to be published or their pictures to be drawn as they did not want Sikhs to pray to pictures of them and further, they wanted us to follow SGGS Ji and not them specifically. So that the Shabad Guru (SGGS Ji) is above all. *This is not criticism; want to learn more about my faith.

    Hi Jagraj, can you please answer yet another question for me? As you know, I really want to take Amrit Sanchar one day soon, hopefully in 2017 , once I have completed your courses. I have come across some discussions on Sikhi websites that state that some Gurdwara leaders can deny you Amrit if your spouse will not take it as well. My spouse is Agnostic and will likely never convert to Sikhi, which makes me sad, but I am also a firm believer of Religion being a free choice. So is it true, that I may never be able to become an initiated Sikh due to this? I am feeling sad right now and hope someone can enlighten me as to this process, whether it is Gurbani based or just the choice of certain Elders. Thank you.

    • @basicsofsikhi
      @basicsofsikhi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bhenji, I wouldn't worry too much about that. That was a view adopted in the 18th Century which worked then as the whole family would take amrit. In todays world where people are so individualistic and Sikhi grows to new cultures, we have to go back to the original 1699 Amrit Sanchar where the Punj Piare were not asked to bring their wives on the stage as well

    • @jeettak

    really hit me with a curve ball with the story of guru ji burning them alive...
    bhai ji what does gurbani say about revenge or punishment for example are the killings of criminal politicians by sikhs in the 70s 80s justified or any acts of revenge by the khalsa. is it right to end a life if you know if not stopped they will hurt or kill others in the future in case if police and the justice system have failed or turned the other cheek

    • @beantsd
      @beantsd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      karanveer brar It confused me. Maharaj said when all means fail it is righteous to draw the sword, thus I don't understand the use of capital punishment. Also when guru Amar Daas Ji was kicked by Dattu did they not say:" are you okay? I hope my old bones did not hurt your foot". Both of these examples, in my opinion contrast with the story Bhaj Jagraj Singh said. Definitely feel as tho I need more clarity on this to understand what maharaj meant.

    • @srigupta184
      @srigupta184 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      YOU CANT understand sikhi with a few videos. You must put your questions on the back burner and read gurbani, study gurbani, and the fog will start to clear up. And by read gurbani I dont mean reading nitnem once and saying 'O i've read the nitnem gurbani' I mean dedicatingly every single day like a Sikh of the Guru.

  • @kiratkaur2141
    @kiratkaur2141 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This isn't an issue here in the USA yet but I generally agree that Anand Karaj should be for Sikhs only. What concerns me is that as Interfaith marriages continue to grow and since Sikhs are not inclined to ask someone to convert, those Sikhs who do marry outside the Panth will end up taking part in the marriage ceremony of another religion. This in turn could lead many of these Sikhs to have the mistaken perception that the Sikh faith does not welcome their partner which could shift their own religious identity to the faith ceremony in which they were wed.

    • @hk2336
      @hk2336 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I dont know any religion that allows ppl of other faiths to have a wedding. To have a nikkah, both parties must be Muslim, to marry in a Catholic church, both parties must be catholic. Maybe hindu mandirs and synagogues do allow interfaith marriage, im not sure.

    • @kiratkaur2141
      @kiratkaur2141 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      H K Not true. A Catholic can marry a Protestant Christian (Baptist, Methodist, etc) without issue. A Catholic can also marry a non-Christian (Muslim, Sikh, etc) with a dispensation by their bishop. A Muslim man can have a Nikkah with a Christian or Jewish woman.
      Unfortunately, we Sikhs don't have thousands of years of laws surrounding this issue. Its our generation that needs to solve it. I think in addition to stopping these marriage ceremonies we need to give non-Sikhs a "path to citizenship". If a Sehajdhari is entitled to Anand Karaj, how does a non-Sikh become a Sehajdhari? That could be the solution. Right now, we're putting up roadblocks without giving these couples another path.

    people are happy to get married in the Sikh tradition even if they don't believe in it.. They are moved by the spirit of the marriage and happy to love it .. This is what you have missed.
    many Hindus and Muslim covered to Sikhism but even they were not given a test.. e.g Banda Singh bhadhur.

    • @cnnpnj8682
      @cnnpnj8682 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No
      the reheat marada says a Sikh can only marry a Sikh. . But being a Sikh does not mean converting.. Sikhism is in the heart.
      Sikh gurus told the Sikh nation that we must put spirituality first.. hence the harm and harmandir sahib is built taller than the akal takth.
      Only if the non Sikh can show they accept Sikh values in their heart and possibly do a test there is no issue.
      But a Sikh marrying a non Sikh willy nilly with no understanding should not be allowed.
      The test it self should be a personal matter and the congregation should not test them..
      Who will create and write the test.. ? And yes it should be conducted in the true spirit of the khalsa.. With optimism love and compassion and should include reference to all jathi bandhis that are ordained.

    Do you know about Rababi Kirtanis? They are muslims they don't change their faith to Sikhi yet they sing Kirtan in Guru's darbar. If that is not against Sikhi then tell me how can a non sikh having lavaan fere be against Sikh Dharam. What I can make out from your analogy is for anyone to come under the umbrella of Guru Granth Sahibji Maharaj (our present living Guru) he will have to change his existing faith. And then you cry for being targeted for being a fanatic, let me ask why not? When Kashmiri pundits came to Guru Teg bahadur did he asked them to change their faith into Sikhi, they literally came begging for their lives.. and look how our great guru reciprocated without imposing any condition. Stop preaching such views. Such ideas like your will just limit Sikhi in it's scope.

    • @mahendrajain5558
      @mahendrajain5558 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** You proved my point only, research and see that rababis are doing kirtans since the time of Guru Nanak and they don't change their faith, they remain Muslims and Sikhs have supported them throughout. So by your logic we were doing a sin till date by ignoring them for so long, isn't it?

    • @mahendrajain5558
      @mahendrajain5558 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gurdit Singh Sir, what I wanted to say was coming in Guruji's sharan and not going empty handed and on one side you have people like Jagraj Singh saying, we must stop them.. Yes of course the basic difference remain between the two things (Kirtan and Lava Fere) but I was talking about the Spirit behind it that is to not refuse anyone.

    • @mahendrajain5558
      @mahendrajain5558 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** kop Singhji, Sat Sri akal.. Stop assuming first of all who I am? Come to the point, I request you to not be harsh towards me personally but keep your criticism upto the discussion. Tell me a simple thing, If kirtan can be performed by other faith's people, what is the harm in allowing such marriages, we can allow in exceptional cases.. As I replied to Gudit Singhji the spirit behind the Sikh panth is not to say no who comes under Guruji's sharan, So if a couple wants to tie their knot in Gurudwara why to refuse them.. If Kirtan can be done by non Sikh.. this is hypocrisy then

    • @mahendrajain5558
      @mahendrajain5558 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Tell me veerji, who is a Sikh? I guess then someone who gets officially baptised and becomes Amrtidhari. You are making everyone a Sikh who is born in a Sikh family then, they might be over powered by Panj Vikaar and lot of Hankaar, yet we consider them as Sikh because just they are born in Sikh families? Is this the right parameter to judge? If those Sikhs are really Sikhs (just externally) and on the top we have trends like Hindus and Muslims doing Kirtans why such a fuss over marriages in Gurdwaras of people of other faiths?

    • @mahendrajain5558

      Gurdit Singh Tell me sir do those Sikhs who are just by birth Sikhs on paper, really stick to the vow made in front of Guruji at the time of Anand karaj? As I asked above, how will you judge a person is actually a Sikh or not? Just by Birth Certificate or by deeds? Saying that only Sikhs are allowed, we are just sticking to external symbolism going against the basic precept "Manas ki Jaat sabhie ek pehchaanbo".. When Guruji doesn't make a difference how can we make it with our limited intellect as compared to our great guru

    I'm not very intelligent or knowledgeable but from my whole experience and understanding of our Gurus, it is hard for me to believe the sakhi about Guru Gobind Singh Ji and capital punishment! It doesn't make sense! Could you further elaborate because in my opinion from what guru ji has said and done, capital punishment is against SIKHI!!

      This isn't a sakhi that Jagraj Singh made up. You don't need to believe it to be true. If you care enough to learn more, the means for you to do so are AVAILABLE. But let me ask you, why are you even fighting with your mind? If you after studying history, you realize you can now believe this sakhi, ask yourself, what will it change for you, about you?

      1jz r154 I'm not looking for an argument and that is why I tried to kindly get a reply instead of just writing something like, hey you're wrong because the story is not right!' What you are saying is either you want me to assume everything paji says is true or just call him a liar because either that or I am lying. The truth is everyone is taught differently from different paths. If you believe something which is not the truth, it doesn't make you a liar, it just means you are mislead. I am just posting an opinion/question about what paji said because I disagree.

      1jz r154 and by the way, I'm not arguing with my own mind but in my opinion, what guru ji teaches as a whole is against capital punishment.

      i think this sakhi illustrates that capital punishment can only be used on ppl who systematically oppress the weak and/or those that used the gurus name to loot, rob and oppress ppl.and despite warnings these ppl did not desist and continued it for years. also this decision can only be taken by the guru/guru khalsa.

      H K Of course if the problem is continuous and after trying all other means to stop the issue, then it is ok... Sound like anything to you? "When all other means fail, then it is righteous to hold the sword in the hand" I agree Guru ji says when you have tried everything to stop criminals but they still don't listen, then you can use force. That is why pita ji had to fight in many wars! However, committing one crime I don't think deserves death. Just a long jail sentence. And torture is out of the question.

    You go on for roughly 10 minutes about how people on the internet haven't read the relevant texts regarding Sikhism and yet you have not really given a clear list of what should be read. Please can you do that. Also you are very dismissive about the intellectual understanding you can gain from the internet and yet you are using it as a platform to preach what you understand as Sikhism. This sort of hypocrisy made this video almost unwatchable for me which I have found very sad. As someone who has been raised as a Sikh I feel more and more removed from Sikhism because of the way it has started to be preached in Britain.

      Bhenji, if you watch the video again, you will see that the focus is on Guru Granth Sahib ji and the various explanations of Gurbani in either textual or audio format (katha). Most of the people commenting on Sikhi nowadays have neither understood Gurbani or listened to explanations of it. We do use the internet but we spend a lot of time putting the Gurbani into the videos so that they people watching know that we are not giving just our views but the views of Gurbani.

      Sikhism is so simple , I don't understand how you are confused. Pick any guthka and read all the banis and understand it, so simple. The translation is available on internet. You should definitely read about the life of baba nanak dev ji and the miracles he performed.
