Golf is not about score. It's about time and place. Who you share it with, or the solitude of a solo round. It's about taking the time to notice your surroundings. In a word, it's sanctuary. That is where the memories are made. Be well, Be safe, Find sanctuary
On the basis Leeds is hardly known as a hive of golfing activity, Alwoodley may be known by many but SandMoor is definitely off the beaten track for most, I’d never heard of it
Nice to see you in my local patch, Andy. Sand Moor is a great course. I love the elevation changes, and the variety of hole designs. And possibly the best set of par 3s in the area. Each one a classic - tiny greens defended by an array of bunkers. All or nothing tee shots. It's a shame you never really get to see the water just yards from the course. The trees lining the reservoir could be thinned to make some startling vistas. My only niggle about a special course. I'm glad you liked Harrogate. I'm a southern lad who married a Harrogate girl and the 30+ years up here have been amazing. It's a wonderful town. Another lovely video extolling the reasons why golf is such a great game for mind, body, and soul. Cheers
The trees adjacent to the reservoir are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, which means that the Club are unable to thin them out. A pity because I agree, the vistas would be stunning.
I do have golfing buddies, but I really like going out by myself and having the opportunity to meet people I have never met before. There are so many great people out there and it is golf that can bring them together - 4 hours is a long time, so plenty of opportunity to move beyond the "where do you work?", "Where do you live?" etc. One day I was partnered with a man who told me that he was out on the golf course trying to hold things together because his wife was in the hospital dying of cancer. We talked throughout and I kept in touch. She died three days later. I was humbled to have the privilege to walk with him for a short while during this difficult time. I played well too - and, surprisingly, so did he... You never know...
Well done Andy and Mike...golf provides a wonderful venue to make new aquaintances and new friendships...as I grow older I probably care a little too much about how I play, but as the number of rounds that may lay ahead of me become less, the friendships and new experiences grow for which I am truly thankful. Have a cold one for me and enjoy what lay ahead as well as behind!
Another wonderful production, And and Tracy. And a great continuation of the philosophy behind 'The Average Golfer plays golf'. It was nice to 'meet' Mikey. I disagree that the conditions didn't make for great photography. It was a very atmospheric day and delivered some lovely images. AndyB and TracyB were my equal favourites this week.
The beauty of the game is the sublime peace of seeking to learn the course, and the people that inhabit it from time to time. It can create some amazing bonds and create friendships. Once more, thank you for sharing this Andy, your channel speaks more to the heart and soul of the game, not the business.
Well done Andy and Mike, being a Yorkshire lad from Bradford and in later times living in Wakefield this is a course I have played before. Alister MacKenzie was Born in Normanton, which is now part of Wakefield and was schooled at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield! There are so many McKenzie courses including some 9 hole courses that he designed when he was making his way as a course designer. I now live in Spain on the Costa Blanca but return to Yorkshire every August to visit family and friends and play as much golf as I can. Some of the courses around north Leeds are beautiful park/ heathland courses. Great video, I hope your wallet didn’t bleed too much from your afternoon tea at Betty’s!!
The video quality on your posts is outstanding. It captures the beauty of golf with simplicity and elegance. Remarkable course - I'll try that course next time I visit my roots in Yorkshire. Andy B for the best pic. Fourth edit on this post. Got to say that after every one of your videos I feel the need to go out there and play - not for the score - just to find the pleasure your rounds exude.
Thanks for hosting and sharing your great hospitality with one f my countrymen. Mike seems to be a great ambassador for Canada 🇨🇦. What you two shared should be what this great game is all about. Great company spent in beautiful serenity, a great walk indeed well put Mike! 👏 Oh and Andy b for me.
Once of your most interesting OTBT’s, Andy. Mikey’s story about his father struck a chord with me and I’m now trying to reset the golfing gods balance by playing with my young grandson most weeks, and his father when we visit him overseas every year. I think you’re on to something with this content. Worth pursuing the idea further, maybe. Oh, and when the contrast drops, switch to black and white, and Andy B for me this week.
Some of the best friendships are made through this amazing game. Nice to see someone playing with Hogan blades ... I still have my old Hogan director blades (apex shafts) and they still look and play great.
Tracy B did it for me Andy. Great video, Golf for me Is having fun and belly laughs with my mates and family. I'm always trying to get better but the laughs ALWAYS makes us come back every week. And lets not forget the ice cold beer at the end of 18.
Tracy B this week. You're an inspiration to me Andy. I played my first competition round in 4 months last week - I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy it, but I much prefer casual rounds these days when you can enjoy it for what it is, without (as you say) the score getting in the way! Loving the content as always.
Great video. Mike's story about the last time he played with his dad was bittersweet to say the least. I have to ask though, did you actually see him hit that blade 1 iron? When he showed that in his bag, my jaw dropped. I thought back to the old Lee Trevino (I think) quote where someone asked him what he would do if there was a lightning storm while he was playing. He replied that he'd stand in the middle of the fairway and hold a 1 iron straight up over his head because not even God can hit a 1 iron. Keep up the good work. I'm really enjoying this series of videos.
I was fortunate to play this course with my mate a year last summer in their open event. We came 3rd. It was all about the score 😂. Alwoodly down the road gets rave reviews and Moortown is very close (Peter Allis). I’m originally from Harrogate, now in Canada, only went to Bettys once, we used to have our Christmas work do in the Royal Hall.
I love the way a course looks with an overcast sky. Great to see you host Mikey and let us come along to meet him as well. Another great video! Tracy A for photo of the week.
Golf to me is an escape period, a flushed shot dead aim in flight and making a birdie put a few times on round is tonic for modern life. I lucky enough now to have two children who now bottomed the curve on learning to hit a least 3 good shots on 6-9 holes,a 1890 John Nash designed course, a hilly design, they enjoy it. When you have teenagers chatting homeward bound about there 3 best shots, the long put that worked or even that iron shot to back on the fairway. That is golf harmony.
Gosh I miss playing with my father!!! This game means so much to so many in different ways. I have 5 son now of my own and absolutely love playing with them!!!
This thoughtful, contemplative and visually appealing video comes across as a visual short story . . . one that would have been enjoyable to read if pen were put to paper. Your partner's willingness to engage in an open and personal way complemented your calim, narrative style. Oh yes, and the cinematography wasn't half bad either!
Golf - a sport for an extended lifetime. Played quite a few Yorkshire courses including Sandmoor. If you haven't been try Alwoodley... a Mackenzie masterpiece.
Awesome video! I'm sure that I heard you say everybody is welcome....well we are all going to show up at the same course on the same day and have one heck of a golf and life celebration!!
I am going to Guelph just outside Toronto late June early July always take the bats happy to play and reciprocate with a game at Ladbrook park back in the uk
I’m off to Gustin Grove on Lake Huron, Canada early July and hoping to get a couple of rounds in, around that neck of the woods. Looking for playing partners.
Another great video Andy you make some great lifetime friends playing golf and the occasional enemy. I'm the same as you sick of this weather but hopefully better weather to come and hopefully more new friends in this game we love. Stay well
I'm going Tracy B for the photo comp, but really enjoyed this episode too. Harrogate had some specific memories for me, not Betty's tea rooms but Gyrating Geoffreys Disco!
This is why I keep watching your videos; great guests, interesting comments and stories and extremely high quality pictures. But this time it's Tracy who wins it with the c) picture.
Tracy C for the photo Love the video and I completely agree golf is not about the score but about the time, the place and the company. I play most weeks with the same partner who I could probably give him a shot a hole and still win, but neither of us care, it is about the walk and the banter.
Great stuff Andy and nice to hear some of Mikey's story. If he's ever in Northern Ireland ask him to drop by Tandragee GC I would be delighted to host him. No RCD or Portrush but a guaranteed friendly welcome.
Come on Andy, you’re having everyone think Sand Moor is in Harrogate….not one mention of Leeds!! Sand Moor is one of North Leeds finest courses. Along with Alwoodley and Moortown, both within spitting distance, I dare say they are a match for a few of the courses over your way Birkdale, S&A and Hillside albeit a different test.
I often feel sorry for people who don't play golf - or have never found something that tapped into their life like the way golf impacts SO many of us. Golf is a game about life, about you as a person, and how you treat those around you. It tests your patience, your character, your resolve. It affords you the opportunity to further forge your current relationships on and off the course - and - build new friendships through the game of golf itself. Golf is a game of Life and for life. Enjoy the walk and take in every breath. The footprints you leave behind on the golf course are forever etched into your memory for life.
Spot on mate. It’s far more than “a bunch of men and women walking round a big field hitting a ball”. Everything you say above I agree with. Yesterday at my club I was last man out at 5:20pm. The clouds cleared up, the sun shone, the shadows lengthened and I was lost in a World of my own with only Canada Geese and ducks for company. There was no wind, fairways were just about ok and the greens so slow and very difficult. A great test. I played the front 9, 10,11, 17 and 18 to get on the last hole before sunset. The stillness of the air, the wild birds eventually silent and the only sound being the water running through drainage ditches (which look natural) was just superb. Best game in the World.
Mike's golf bag reminded me that I need to stop spending money on new clubs....for a long time. I will spend on lessons but that's it for the foreseeable future.
Tracy e was the winner this week Andy. Nice idea to play a round with an overseas visitor. An idea worth developing/repeating I think. Chilled, enjoyable soundtrack once again.
Hi, I would be delighted to invite you and Mikey as my guests to play our wonderful course, Delamere Forest n Cheshire. Ranked circa 41st in in England. A Fowler course founded 1910, much loved by members and visitors, and soon to host a qualifier for the women’s AIG Open later this year. We have been closed three days this winter because of snow. A course built on sand, drains bette than any I have played. Get in touch if you would like to come, anytime. David
Hey The Average Golfer, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made. I was wondering if I could help you edit your videos and repurpose your long videos into highly engaging shorts? I can also make high CTR thumbnails for your channel

Agree this is how I look at it also….. thank you
I enjoyed Sand Moor when we played there - but you can't say it's off the beaten track when Alwoodley and Moortown are next door!

The less you focus on your score, the more you can enjoy the company and scenery. Thanks for the reminder!

Allot of wise words there Andy-I've decided to dust of the clubs after a couple years of so looking forward to getting back out there!
Some of the best friendships are made through this amazing game. Nice to see someone playing with Hogan blades ... I still have my old Hogan director blades (apex shafts) and they still look and play great.
Excellent short and simple
My home course is looking decidedly damp in April! 😅
Tracy B did it for me Andy. Great video, Golf for me Is having fun and belly laughs with my mates and family. I'm always trying to get better but the laughs ALWAYS makes us come back every week. And lets not forget the ice cold beer at the end of 18.
Lovely video with a great message. Andy B on the photos.
Andy A for the win. Nice to see a fellow Canuck on the channel.
Really enjoyed this Andy. Mike is such an interesting guy -- he's got a beautiful golf swing. And the most interesting bag setup :)
really good. was nice to see a guest on with a story. and Tracy B, photo of the week for me
Andy - I think you need to do a Canadian golf trip! Especially some of the courses in the Mountains, you feel like your playing in Switzerland.
Could you perhaps give me a list of the clubs you would recommend?
Tracy B this week. You're an inspiration to me Andy. Come to the Costa del Golf...every day golf weather.....haha😂
Golf - a sport for an extended lifetime. Played quite a few Yorkshire courses including Sandmoor. If you haven't been try Alwoodley... a Mackenzie masterpiece.
I love this. This episode is what golf is all about. Hats off to you and Mike. Brilliant
Bravo to Mikey and his excellent choice of clubs, courses and ideas I am sure. Andy b
Awesome video! I'm sure that I heard you say everybody is welcome....well we are all going to show up at the same course on the same day and have one heck of a golf and life celebration!!
That was like a mental massage. You need to approach the BBC, Mortimer and Whitehouse-esque ‘Gone Golfing’.
This guy was in the breaking pebble beach series from Random Golf Clubs!
Yes he was
Golf is relatively cheap when compared to good friendship, which is priceless. Excellent quality video as always. Tracy C for me this week.
I am going to Guelph just outside Toronto late June early July always take the bats happy to play and reciprocate with a game at Ladbrook park back in the uk

Sunny today!
Mikey is a legend. Silky swinger of the golf club, a wonderful companion and good friend.
This video is 👌

I am sure he will read these comments, thanks for the nice offer
My favorite video yet.
Fantastic photography, a beautiful course, and playing..
Nice episode! Interesting guest and a nice looking video.
