    I really like this often unrecognized Goldilocks or Tweener category of crossovers that ranges from about 188" to "191" inches in length. They're larger than the "compact" category that average around 181" and stretches from the 179" CX-5 to the 185" VW Tiguan and Nissan Rogue. And smaller than the bulk of three row mainstream "midsize" crossovers that stretches from vehicles a bit over 192" (e.g Highlander) all the way to over 203" (Chevy Traverse).
    The tweener class includes vehicles like the Hyundai Santa Fe, the KIA Sorento, the Ford Edge, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Subaru Outback, and the Passport. Almost all offer V6 engines either as standard or optional powerplants. (The Edge stands out with a turbo V6 in the ST model. And the Grand Cherokee offers some V8 options, as well.) The exception is the Hyundai Santa Fe with a four cylinder turbo motor. Almost all offer traditional AT's with eight or more gears; CVT's are rare in this group.(Only the Outback has one.) All but one are two row, five passenger vehicles. The Sorento is the exception with a standard third row that's surprisingly roomy given the size of the KIA but it's still an "occasional use" feature. In terms of MSRP's, comparisons can be complicated but trim levels generally range from the low $30K to the mid $40K price points. Real world pricing via a serious negotiation with a dealer is another matter.
    All in all, it's a distinctive and largely comparable group: larger than the compact class where four cylinder engines are universal and transmissions include a number of models with CVT's. Significantly more maneuverable and easier to park and fit into a garage than the larger three row "midsize" crossovers, especially if you want to hang hitch mounted bike rack on the back.
    Each of the vehicles in the category has some distinct advantages coupled with some issues. The Edge ST is the performance leader by quite a bit but the MSRP will likely put it over $50K. The Sorento stands out in terms of versatility with its especially efficient "packaging" of passenger space considering it has a third row of seats but some object to its styling and its brand image. The Outback has an almost cult-like following among Subar-ites. And not without reason. But it's kinda squeezed between the ever growing Forester and the Ascent. The Grand Cherokee can be configured more successfully for off-road use than others but it can get pricey if options aren't selected carefully. All have available AWD but Honda's version of SH-AWD and the Grand Cherokee's true 4x4 design are probably superior to the others but those advantages may not be needed or noticed by most drivers. And the Hyundai Santa Fe's top "Ultimate" trim is a value leader at under $40K but you can't get a V6 in a vehicle that weighs over two tons. That can be a concern in terms of long-term durability.
    All in all, the Passport's greatest strengths and weaknesses are how closely it resembles the Honda Pilot. Strong, reliable engine. Some features that give it a more rugged appearance and capabilities but so similar to the Pilot that those features aren't likely stand out especially given its near identical interior. For those who prefer its tidier size, it may be a better choice. But like the Sorento vs the new Telluride, some may see fail to see any real advantage in a two row, five passenger vehicle sitting next to a Pilot on the showroom floor.

    I have this car. It’s moves really well. I had a guy with a Dodge Ram Rebel with a Hemi in it from work. I obliterated him. The 20inch rims for an adventure vehicle are dumb though. Much rather have 18s.

    A considerable improvement from the original passport that was a copy of the Isuzu Rodeo. Don’t really understand how crossovers like that happen. 😂

    • @YACFEGGMT
      @YACFEGGMT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CARSPLAINING it was a part sharing program... Honda used the Isuzu SUVs (Rodeo=Passport and Trooper=Acura SLX) while Isuzu used Hondas for their smaller vehicles mostly overseas (Isuzu Domani=Honda Civic, Isuzu Aska=Honda Accord and the Isuzu Oasis=Honda Odyssey (actually came to America))

  • @10tenman10

    I looked at the Hyundai Santa Fe today. Similar size to the Passport but much cheaper. Would like to hear if anyone has an insight into the comparison.

    • @KZEnVy08
      @KZEnVy08 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For about 4-5k cheaper than the Passport Elite awd (44k ish), you can get a brand new Santa Fe ultimate 2.0t awd (40k ish). Only real difference in options i can find is the passport gives you power folding mirrors. Otherwise, the two are practically identical in options, safety equipment and size.

    • @Tehilliym
      @Tehilliym 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The awd system in the passport is damn good. Might be worth it if you live in a northern climate with treacherous winter roads

    • @TeijoKhanfan
      @TeijoKhanfan ปีที่แล้ว

      For me it's a no brainer; Passport for the unanimous win. Living up north the great AWD system along with the non turbo V6 durability, sitting higher up feeling safer with more ground clearance and all around Honda reliability. I just don't trust Hyundai and Kias engines and reliability. I would feel very confident in getting 200,000 plus miles out of this truck.

  • @tikishark1
    @tikishark1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    This looks very similar to my 2016 Honda Accord Touring Sedan, which is actually disappointing. Very dated interior, especially for a 45,000 vehicle. For instance, for 41,000 you can purchase the new Kia Telluride which includes an all-digital cockpit, 360-degree camera system, front and rear heated and ventilated seats, an extended sunroof, and even a level 2 adaptive cruise control system( Honda still uses a level 1 version). Honda relies too much on their name and needs to innovate (or at least match competitors) in order to stay in the market.

    People buy cars for silly reasons. Yes its roughly the same price as the pilot and has less utility, but it looks better and only has two rows, thus shedding the mom stigma associated with something like a pilot. If there's one thing to be learned from the last ~8 years it's that people will pay more for less if it makes them feel what they want to feel. The aggressive appearance and fake off road credibility will make this thing sell well I think.

    • @1MarkKeller
