    I've done quite a few brake jobs on my cars and done trackdays and plenty of bedding in, but I don't understand how you bed the pads prior to fitting!? I thought the bedding process was to match the surface of the new pads to the disc surface as well? Looking at MX72s for my RS5, has Pagid HPs from factory, really good on track and stayed good afterwards on the road! Hoping the MX72s will be the same?

  • @mysoap23
    @mysoap23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wouldn't you want to bed the pads to new rotor as well, not a rotor with pad material already on it?

    • @MotiveVideo
      @MotiveVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rotor is just steel. Main thing is it is flat and not warped

    In regards to the the brake fluid reservoir level marks, not all vehicles are made equal. Some reservoirs are actually incapable of having the correct amount required for all the pads to wear low, and with less fluid, you also have less ability and less volume for satisfactory heat transfer in the fluid. The other issue is, front and rear brake bias can cause pads to wear at different rates, so if you're going off the level to determine pad wear, you could be in for a rude shock when 1 set has worn metal to metal, and in some cases the back plate falls out of the calliper, causing the calliper pistons to then be the next contact point, which then leads to direct heat transfer to the calliper seals. In some cars theses seals will actually melt due to this heat and spew the fluid out, potentially causing a fire. It's also not a good trait to get into, because brake systems can have seized callipers, where some calipers may retract and the other do not, which can give a false indication that your pads are wearing down correctly and this generally causes people to be ignorant and not take the vehicle to a service centre for inspection, sometimes dust covers and internals seals get damaged, and this is common on heavily driven offroad 4x4's, and this can cause leaks. Now if you only have half or low reservoir fluid, you only have a low to slim chance of getting that vehicle back to a safe spot to be able to be towed home, if the reservoir is full, you increase your likelihood of rescue. By rights, any fellow mechanic worth their qualification, will remove the wheels off your vehicle, check rotor and pad thickness, and check moisture contamination of the brake fluid, as the brake fluid is hygroscopic. For the average punter, this means that the fluid itself, actually draws moisture in from the atmosphere, deteriorating the boiling point of the fluid, affecting its ability to handle, disperse heat within the fluid itself. Never EVER assume that just because the fluid is between the 2 lines it's OK. Monitor the frequency of how often you are topping it up. If it's becomes more regular, and your driving habits haven't changed, you have a problem. Easiest way for any Joe blow to know. If the fluid is changing to a darker shade quicker and you have changed your driving styles, a full system fluid upgrade would be recommended, as the fluid isn't constantly being flogged near boiling point, and breaking down. Just a differing real world point of view from a 20 year industry veteran who's serviced thousands of cars.

    I’ve only done short duration events in my car, so cooling ducts aren’t really needed yet. I’ve got some pads on the way and some lighter rotors. The rotors are for a reduction in unsprung mass to improve handling but, there’s also a reduction in rotational inertia, so the brakes will have less work to do. Did you consider lighter rotors?
