    Amazing to see an Irish man being vulnerable like this, especially to realise he was born in a mother and baby home. Amazing representation of Irish men coming out and talking about this. Made me feel emotional and so proud of you Liam. No one is laughing you, I admire you.

    Liam. I acknowledge your Courage and self-Compassion in both your prior demo with Dick, and particularly here. I'm an IFS practitioner (facilitator, not a therapist) in the U.S., and I treasure these types of opportunities to observe and learn from Dick as he assists folks to connect with, witness, and unburden complex systems with vulnerable parts. You've provided another incremental gift to the IFS community with this recording. Thank you. Kind regards.

      @@luisacervantes4643 - Hi, there. Thanks for asking. First and foremost, I have - and continue to - apply everything I learn about Internal Family Systems to myself, and to my relationships in my family. I cannot overstate the importance and value of doing the work on ourselves before we attempt to assist others. I've been at this for nearly a decade, and I'm still finding and healing distressed parts in my own system. :-)
      Here are a few bits from my journey: I began by learning an energy-healing model (Psych-K in my case). In retrospect, developing skills in energy-healing has proven to be valuable in developing my awareness of, and connection to, what I later came to recognize - in the context of IFS - as "Self".
      Bessel van der Kolk and his book "The Body Keeps the Score" brought me an awareness of the trouble created by childhood trauma and/or sustained distress, as well as providing an introduction to IFS. There are many books for IFS written by Dr. Schwartz and his colleagues. In addition to the more formal training books, there is the recent "No Bad Parts" (published by Sounds True). I recommend the audio of that book, as Dr. Schwartz voices himself in the example sessions.
      When the Level 1 training offered by the IFS Institute became hard to get into, I joined the Online Circle, and then the IFS Continuity program. While these do not take the place of the training, they do help to build a good foundation for developing IFS skills.
      I've taken in many of the free vids on YT with Dr. Schwartz, including his conversations here at PCPSI with Liam. I have learned much from two IFS-specific podcasts: IFS Talks (internalfamilysystems.pt/ifs-talks), and The One Inside (tammysollenberger.com/podcast/). I've also learned a lot from Derek Scott (ifsca.ca/videos/).
      Among others, I've additionally studied the work of psychologist Marshall Rosenberg, the creator of Nonviolent Communication (you might like this vid that I created a while back: th-cam.com/video/RDkh1al3P9k/w-d-xo.html); physician Dr. Gabor Mate (including his book "When the Body Says No"); of neuroscientist Dr. Steven Porges, the researcher who defined Polyvagal Theory; of psychiatrist Dr. Dan Siegel, the creator of Interpersonal Neurobiology; of developmental psychologist Dr. Gordon Neufeld (including his book "Hold On To Your Kids"); of neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Feldman-Barrett (including her book "How Emotions Are Made").
      I will end with this thought: Perhaps the two most essential skills in developing ourselves as IFS practitioners, and as humans, are a deep sense of openness and curiosity, and a strong connection to the core energy that brings us to life ("Self-energy" in IFS).
      I hope this info is helpful to you. It's a cross-section (and a fraction) of my personal journey to understand and heal my own system, and my commitment to serve others well as an IFS-skilled facilitator-practitioner.

    • @luisacervantes4643
      @luisacervantes4643 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@RickTashma Wow, thank you for your response Rick, This was indeed VERY helpful information! I have a background on Psych-K as well and other energy-healing techniques (which I agree strengthen the Self). It's awesome you've been applying IFS work on you and your loved ones for nearly a decade, congratulations! I wish I knew about it before, I know this work for less than a year and been applying it to myself, I've read a couple of books and will continue with the recommendations you made. (Btw thank you for ALL the recommendations and links) I have a feeling that this approach is the missing peace for my healing and a great tool to serve others as well, I come from a background with anorexia, bulimia and depression and just knowing there is/was nothing "wrong" with me , just parts that needed to be seen and heard gives me so much compassion for myself and others. I'm honestly very excited about discovering this method and will be studying as much as I can. I can't afford a training right now but your response gave me the inspiration to keep reading and learning. Thank you again =D

    • @RickTashma
      @RickTashma 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@luisacervantes4643 - Thanks for your reply. I honor your commitment to healing your system and I acknowledge your courage to share a bit of your story here.
      The perspective offered by IFS is marvelous. To recognize that we are created with a core Self that cannot be damaged or harmed, and to see that the elements (Parts) of our system which are carrying injuries or other unresolved energies can be released from their various tribulations with some attention and kindness, is truly wonderful. Great that you also have a background in Psych-K; it's been quite helpful for me.
      I thank you also for your original question. I've thought about enumerating my IFS and related journey, so it was a kick to consider a portion of what I've studied and assimilated this last decade. Sheesh!
      Here's to a graceful journey of reconnecting with your Self a little more with each Part that you heal. Cheers!

    I agree incredible. Especially at the end and seeing the core of such a beautiful man.
    When i was traveling in Ireland as a student about 40 years ago I spent a couple of nights in a student hostel. What I remember was, it was a large old house with many ruggid bunks and group kitchen. A large portion was taken over by young single mothers and their children.
    Evenso, all seemed happy, especially the children able to be so close to their poor mothers under these conditions. The mothers all sharing their circumstance together and with the young college students passing through, it seemed like a family comforting sort of system.
    The experience has never left my memory and.to this day. I wondered how it all worked out for those children, the ones that stayed by their mothers side. The older ones helping where they could. It was not an unpleasant experience.
    From my perspective now, the mothers were leaning on each other and the children were growing together in their own age groups. The mothers were not alone leaning so much on their children in these hard times and yet were close to them.

    My father was angry and violent when I was a child. If he perceives I looked at him in a 'funny' he would beat me. I learned to be hyper sensitive about the way I looked, I fear people's perception of me.
    On the day shift there's managers and thousands of office staff, I believe it might trigger my old anxious scared kod and the fatigue overwhelms me because all I want to do is go home
    I really need help as I feel the fatigue is going to consume me.. I'm very scared.

      It sounds like hyper vigilance from the trauma! Also, we’re not meant to oscillate between day and night shifts with no set sleeping schedule. I just watched a podcast on how much shift workers are affected by this, really worth look into getting a more routine sleep schedule. And no night shifts.

      The exile is the little boy stuck in the home and scared for his life. The protector part was the one who stepped in the way and warned Liam to back off from going to the exiled little boy part. The protector feared the little boy would be killed if exposed. He thought Liam was only young and didn’t believe that he could take care of him like he could. He eventually let Liam through though and was then surprised to find the little boy wasn’t killed and that in fact Liam was able to to take care of him. This meant the protector could now rest.
