Great job, guys. This is actually one of the most accurate absinthe info videos I've seen, with only a couple of items worth clarifying:
At 2:43 Jonathan states that "absinthe can only be sold in the United States if it's thujone-free". This is true, but what most folks don't know is that the FDA defines thujone-free as under 10 parts per million. The EU has a similar restriction, but their definition of thujone-free is 35 ppm. A wide selection of samples of top-shelf pre-ban absinthes (made before 1915) has been analyzed by modern instruments (GC/MS) and the thujone contents were variable. They ranged between 0.5 and 48.3 ppm.
The only important error is at 2:48, where Jonathan states that "if it has wormwood in it, the FDA considers it adulterated". In fact, alcoholic drinks approved for import, manufacture and sale in the US may contain wormwood and, beyond the stipulation that they be thujone-free, the amount of wormwood itself isn't regulated.
    Other handy facts:
Wormwood has never been "illegal", in the US, only restricted from food use beginning in 1912.
Many other traditional drinks besides absinthe contain wormwood. The Swedish bitter liqueur Malort is loaded with it. Polish piołunówka, and the Croatian pelinkovac are wormwood-infused vodkas. Vermouth is made with it; the word "vermouth" coming from the German word for wormwood: "wermut".

So I actually bought a bottle with the Thujone in it years ago. No hallucinations, but I enjoyed the stuff when mixed into the right drinks. • @emperorofpluto
    @emperorofpluto 10 ปีที่แล้ว

The main characteristic of quality absinthe is the "louche" - which is where it changes colour when water is dripped into it. The best absinthe turns a pearlescent green. Never ever drink it straight, always add iced water, but very gradually. Anyone who's ever lived in Southern Europe will be familiar with the taste - it is predominantly anise, like liquorice and looks and tastes exactly like Pastis, which was introduced by Pernod Ricard after the ban.

Ok Just an update: as of November 2011 The original recipe for Absinthe has been legal to sell in the United States. I for one drink it sparingly (It has a KICK)
You must pour it over a sugar cube into 2 to 3 oz of ice water then it will turn a pearly pale green color. (That is where it gets the name the Green Fairy)

Absinthe is the only alcohol aside from red wine that I like. I've tried around 20 or so brands now and it's amazing how different each one tastes from the other. It's fun to discover new ones. The thujone has little or no flavor, nor does it make you high, so you aren't missing out on much if you buy it in the US or abroad. I've had both. If you're new to absinthe, look for La Clandestine or Vieux Carré - they're both great introductions to whet your appetite for the more complex ones and they're still both go-to brands for me even today.

One day I had Absinthe and yeah I went from a huge social drinker to rarely drinking. Absinthe is not to be taken lightly. Try to make a couple drinks from a 130 proof bottle and make its perfectly and finish the bottle in three days.
You will learn in the power the drink has and like anything dangerous when consuming it I take it lightly now but I am more nervous to have at it again. I still have the entire setup. The slow drip, spoon, and absinthe glass

There where ten of us, and we all had it served in the traditional way with the sugar cube and everything. We all took our drink at the same time. Three instantly threw up, another two threw up later outside, me and two others coughed and sputtered for a bit bit where ok, and two took it like a boss! I don't have a lot of alternative drink experimentation to compare (except the standard US liquors), but I certainly got a warm, fuzzy, and even Jolly feeling by drinking it.
I had it in Dubai, and the mix it was in was jet black- which didn't make sense to me but I was a fishbowl margarita in anyway so I didn't object. I had asked for a "Kamikaze" which is a popular US mixed drink or shot, and that's what he gave me.
The bartender made a couple classy comments about "we require our absinthe drinkers to tab out or pay by the glass because they always leave their cards". I played along, but the absinthe wasn't prepared via either popular method (flaming sugar cube or icewater drip). It was a good experience, and I can attest that I had the attention span of a 6 year old on the long walk back to the subway, and then ride to the hotel.

Thujone likely does not cause hallucinations, but it may reverse the sedative effects of ethanol. Because Ethanol is a strong GABA agonist as well as a weak NMDA antagonist, and Thujone is a strong GABA antagonist, it is plausible that more ethanol can be consumed allowing higher NMDA antagonism to exist.

You can buy 40% alcohol absinthe online which contains 35mg/kg thujone (if legal in your country) - lovely stuff - very herbally and bitter if you don't add sugar. It gives you a nice relaxed and laid back feeling :)

Wicked strong tho at 70% alcohol/volume so I'd suggest you'd better dilute it some

Had absinthe in the Czech Republic 14 years ago. That stuff had nothing left out at all, and max thujone content. 5 minutes later, words started coming out of me that were not my own, it was freaking horrible. I didn't hallucinate but I was not in a good place. Not even that drunk, just a total personality shift I have no desire to revisit.

I've had St. George's absinthe- it was a very strong taste with many subtle layers to it. Probably the closest thing to a hallucination I experienced was the way it so deeply aroused memories associate with taste and smell.

Best way to experience the visual effects of artemisia absinthium ala wormwood is to prepare the absinthe yourself and smoke a bit of the wormwood along with the drink. Also helps to do this during nighttime. Wormwood much like its relative mugwort can induce a dream like state somewhere in between consciousness and subconsciousness. That’s why they have such a long rich history with dreamwork and things of this nature with the Celtic druids and a multitude of other cultures. Tons of misinformation out there on this 🙏❤️🙏

Have I ever drank that much? Does a bear do the 2 in the woods? I have a ridiculously high tolerence for alcohol. I don't drink much anymore but I could easily drink 18- 24 beer and still walk to bed, oh and that's Canadian beer by the way. I wish now that I had half the money I've spent on alcohol in the past back in my pocket. Absinthe is on my bucket list. I do wish to try it, and I'm sure the day will come.

  • @deadsi
    @deadsi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Knew it, it's weird this is still such a common belief, I think it's cuz whenever nothing happens ppl blame it on the absinthe not being genuine. The buzz off such high proof alc is different enough from getting drunk on weaker alc that the placebo effect is enough to convince some ppl they're feeling the effects of a different substance. If u want a trip like the absinthe trip they show in movies get salvia or dmt

Back when the Euro first became a currency, and was doing poorly so you could buy stuff SUPER cheap, I found a website based in Spain that would ship absinthe to the US. I must have ordered dozens of different bottles over the years, sourced from all over Europe.
Never once did I hallucinate from it. I may have felt mild effects, but it was mild enough that it's unclear if it was because I expected to, or if it was actually happening. Even with the most potent stuff I ever bought, nothing. Tasty though, now I don't hate that black licorice flavor anymore. INSANE hangovers though, do not overdo it with that shit, you have been warned.

Some fast facts from a regular absinthe drinker (me) with tujon:
-Absinthe in Czech and Slovak Republic is legal, you can buy it in Tesco and other supermarkets and bars
-its very popular because of the relatively high level of alcohol concentration (not even the highest you can buy, the highest is the Tartatea: Outlaw Tea (82% of alcohol, absinthe is usually 70%) what is a sweet distilled herb drink)
-one shot (50ml) of absinthe makes you horny (but still sober); 2 shots makes you party; 3 drunk and the 4th in short time... lets say to drunk to be in public. Usually 4 is enough
-there are two major types of absinthe: French and bohemian. French has a higher wormwood and tujon content (~3.6%) but much lower amount alcohol (40-50%); and the bohemian, ranging from 55% to 85%.
    the preparation methods are different:
-the french absinthe is poured into the glass. you put a cube of sugar over the glass, using an absinthe spoon, and you slowly pour ice cold water, drop by drop on the cubed sugar so it melts into the absinthe
-if you have a bohemian one, you put the sugar over the empty glass, you pour absinthe over it, and if the sugarcube gets absorbed with the absinthe you light it up with fire and let it caramelise to the glass.
-or if you are a barbarian as me, you just drink the absinthe as it is.
-also, there are more colors of absinthe: classic green, black and red (maybe i seen blue, not sure)
--the black is heavier and sweeter
    --the red is lemony
    --the green is traditionally bitter
if you get any questions, feel free to ask.

I have nothing against alcohol coz I drank a couple Margaritas last night. But aldhohol is such a part of our lives but I never learned how to drink. What I mean is, it was never explained how alcohol is metabolized and how much you should drink of any kind of particular spirit in a certain amount of time. Taking in account the body mass index and tolerance by habit. I believe the industry owes us that information one way or another. Like by putting some guidelines in the packaging/bottle. I've had my share of problems caused by excessive drinking because I drank spirits like wine but spirits are about 3 times stronger... Be carefull is my advice! If you want to enjoy spirits, think: "less is more" and give it time to be metabolized by the liver so you don't overload your system, including your brain!
Yes, I've had black outs and did crazy, dangerous things while being alcohol intoxicated.

Made bootleg Absinthe in college using Bacardi 151. It was drinking poison ivy, but once i figured out to wash it down with lemon juice it was bearable. It was definitely a different drunk, pleasant, made you feel lighter. I know it's not the alcohol content alone. How? Put it this way: I was in one of the most popular frats at Penn State, I knew my way around a bottle.

"Aniseed" is an alternative name for anise. They use star anise to make the drink. Star anise (or star aniseed), believe it or not, is actually an entirely separate species from anise despite the name, although the two have a similar flavor.
