I have to say this is probably my favorite game of all time and I do think it holds up 25 years later. Especially the 3DS version.
That 3DS version is beautiful! Also loved Majora's Mask 3DS, they even made that a little more challenging

@@andrewdyke5561my ideal version of OoT would be an HD remaster of the 3DS remake with the brightness turned down to the original’s in places like the battle with Ganon and the grittier and bloodier design of the Shadow Temple and the Deadhand of the original being brought back for the remake. That would be the perfect game for me.
i finished OOT earlier this year on original N64 and i can confirm it is very good and i wasn't expecting the ending to be perfect! i thought i knew why its one of the best games ever but when i actually finished it after decades of just playing it for fun, i truly understood why it is such a masterpiece
For the record: The first three adult dungeons can be tackled in any order you like once you have the Hookshot. Navi suggests Forest, but you can do whatever you want. You can even tackle the Thieves Hideout if you get Epona if you want. Ocarina is a lot less linear than what people think it actually is.
It definitely has aged, but it's still a lot of fun. For modern gamers I would recommend playing the 3DS Remake or specially the Ship of Harkanian PC port.

What I expected: a deep analysis of Ocarina of Time, what made it good then, and how/if it holds up now.
What I got: a 14 minute summary of Ocarina of Time with a 2 minute followup.
The worst thing about the owl is that the dialogue option switches at least once, so it’s not even like you can get a muscle memory thing going. You always have to make sure you are clicking the right option.

This is still one of my favorite games ever. I still have original copy with the chanting in the fire temple and the red blood Ganon before they removed all of that
my first time playing OOT was the 3D remaster on the 3DS and this is definitely the better version to play. However there is still the PC port of the decompilation of the N64 version. This offers widescreen, high FPS and many community mods including randomizers. Some day in the future I will definetly take a look at it
The pc port looks really good with a hd texture pack but the moblins and great fairy textures look terrifying so keep that in mind when you do play it.
One of my favourite features of the PC port (SOH) is the free camera option, which gives you full control over the camera. It made the game quite a bit more enjoyable for me.

Your humor and editing makes me feel like you gotta get out of my head. We both made that tunic does nothing joke from the Simpsons. I said it legit like half a second before the vid did. Your song choices and other reference jokes are top notch. Neon genesis for ganon, the kazoo solo choices just make me Italian hand gesture
I have so many fond memories of this game back on the N64. Very early on me and my brother would never even make it past the deku tree (we were too young to be able to solve puzzles like breaking the spider web in the center of the entrance room), but we just kep remaking new files to play up to that point again anyway because it was so fun. Then our older cousin showed us how to get past that and it was like discovering a whole new world with Hyrule Field open to us.

Great video! Quick tip, if you let go of Z-targeting during the Spirit temple boss fight when reflecting the beams, and just hold your shield up with R, you can move the shield independently while Link is crouching behind it. This allows you to direct the beam onto the opposing witch more easily.

The cow is there for if you need a health recovery at that point. If you play Epona's Song next to any cow, the cow will fill one of your empty bottles with milk to drink for 5 hearts. The placement of the cows is really odd sometimes but I guess that's where the game devs felt the players might need them most(?)

Great video! Ocarina of Time is packed full of memories for me. I also sucked at it when i was young. I'd make my big brother get me to the fishing part and I'd spend days there lol

This game never fails to remind me of the happy times I spent talking with my best friend about this game when we were around 10 years old, we both had a Nintendo 64 each and he would lend me his Ocarina of Time cartridge, he introduced me to this cool new game he had just gotten after he invited me to his house to watch him play actually, damn, it's been a long time since then, 18 years, thanks for this hilarious and perfectly summarized review of the game's story.
Something genius I always found about Ocarina of Time's world design is that places that are far away from each other that you will need to go between have warps between them. For example, if you didn't go to the Lost Woods to pick up Saria's Song before making your way up Death Mountain, there's a warp IN Goron City you can take to get there. All you need to do is light some torches so you can reach the bombs with some fire and you now have a shortcut so you don't have to "backtrack" anywhere.
In fact, the Lost Woods links together Goron City and Zora's Domain~ And Zora's Domain links to Lake Hylia while you're a kid, which is right next to Gerudo Valley! This is something even some modern Zelda games don't get quite right~
Personally, the Spirit Temple is my favorite dungeon! And part of it is because you do the dungeon as a child and an adult. I do think it would have been more interesting if you did more stuff as Child Link that changed things when you came back as Adult Link, but there were a couple of things, and that was cool. But doing a proper Temple as Young Link without the superior gear Adult Link has was an interesting challenge; especially dealing with a Stalfos. It was pretty cool to have a dungeon split into two halves. Dealing with Twinrova's first form is also actually pretty easy: You don't Z-Target them. You get them in your line of sight, and then just hold R and manually aim it at them~
The coolest thing about the Spirit Temple to me, though? As an adult when you get the Membership Card, a lot of the guards are talking about Nabooru, and how she went to the temple to investigate something and never returned. As an adult, though, there's no sign of her. So you go back to the temple as a child and you find her doing exactly that: investigating the Temple. And you find out EXACTLY why she went missing, and then you go back and help her as an adult~ It was a REALLY cool and clever way to introduce the final Sage into the story.
13:39 - ...Huh. Wow, after all of these years of playing OoT, including numerous Randomizers, and I never once knew you could interrupt his attack that way. My solution was always just to charge a Spin Attack and hit them all back at the same time~
As you might guess, Ocarina of Time, to this day, is STILL one of my favorite Zelda games of all time. Hyrule Field itself is pretty barren and the aiming and Epona controls could definitely be tighter. But the way the game plays--especially combat--is extremely intuitive, the world design is genius and brilliantly compact, the world is littered with secrets everywhere, the dungeon design is spectacular on the whole, and the story and worldbuilding is legendary. No matter how much time passes, this game still continues to be in my Top 5, if not my Top 3 Zelda games of all time. Especially if you enjoy Randomizers. And no, this wasn't my first Zelda.

The answer is yes. I just finished a play through last week (my first one on the 3DS version at that) and it only took me about 5 minutes to remember the tricks to manipulate the camera and really no right stick is the game’s only real flaw. Great video as always, an awesome mix of review and humor.
Love this game. I tried all the tricks when it first came out. Learning that you could beat the game without all the medallions refreshed the game a lot
I'm currently replaying it on Switch (via expansion).. still love it, still phenomenal; brings me back to childhood ever single time I play, love this game so much.. (took me two tries to get Epona, could've been on first attempt except I had to get caught on something)

Ocarina of Time is one of my absolute favourites. I played it the first time on a N64, later on, when i had a somewhat capable pc, i've got my hand on an Emulator (PJ64 to be exact) and a "shady" CD, from my brother, that had Ocarina of Time rom on it (and a lot of other n64 roms), i again played through the game, but now in a higher resolution (1280x1024 was common back then and i was amazed, that it can run without a problem, with that res.), i played multiple times through it. Later on, the time, when the remake released on the 3DS, i got my hands on a 2DS and a copy of Ocarina of Time 3D (+Majoras Mask of course). It was a blast, seeing my favourite game getting that much of polish and love from the devs.
PS: rickroll... ok, you catch me off guards.. and with all the other play ins 😂
PSS: The only thing i find annoying about this game, is "Navy" the fairy companion, everytime, I've heard "hey, listen!!!", i was like, "oh come on, i know, what i have do do, i am just exploring the area for items, just please STFU" or just "AAAAAAAARRRRRRGHHHHHH!!!!!!!"
My first time was playing the GameCube port of OOT which included Master Quest. I played both and loved that I could enjoy the extra challenge all while using the excellent GameCube controller!

Ocarina 3D is among my favourite games of all time (I.e, top 5 or 6) and my favourite Zelda game.
I played this emulated the other day with some HD texture packs and a few mods like widescreen and no hud, still brilliant and epic as ever

I was 5 years old when this game came out, and i was 8 when i played it. I could never get far in the game at that age, but i bought my n64 used and it had three saves on it, so i played far into the game without progressing myself.
I just started playing again at age 30 on PC, and im amazed at how much of this game has rooted itself so deeply into my memory.
I remember this game as if i played it last year, not 22 years ago as an eight year old child.

I love this game, it was actually the first game I played when I first got my GameCube for Christmas. It came with the collectors edition and took me years to beat it thanks to that pesky water temple. This game was and still is a true masterpiece for children and adults. I prefer the original graphics over the 3DS ones because of nostalgia. I’ll replay it on my switch to relive my youth and try to 100% it this time. This game and Majora’s Mask will always hold a special place in my youthful memories .
1997 really was the year for N64 vore. In Banjo Kazooie you go into a shark, a crocodile, a crab, a turtle and a sphinx. And the hub world is accessed through a witch's mouth

Edit Edit: The many Random Cows are used for a nice way off getting free milk. You could say they are a kind of resting spot lol. Just play Eponas Song with an empty Bottle and you can get Milk.
Switch version is fine now. Looks great on my OLED!
Ocarina of TIme has always been the GOAT for me. Can't say it enough. Even if the graphics are outdated by today's standards, at least there's the 3D version. The gameplay may not have completely aged gracefully either, but the game's story will always be the ultimate fantasy adventure in my book. Nice funny recap of the game by the way.
after i beat botw and totk i knew i needed to go back to play the games i beat 20 years earrier for more zelda and oot was something that stood out ot me with its gold cartridge so i played it and without any guides i figured out that npcs throughout your journey give subtle hints at where you should go for say an item or to progress the story. then again i also could recall much off what i needed to do from 20 years ago like the adult trade quest, but again the game can point you in the right direction if you get lost.

It has aged but it's still one of my favourite games to play. I think one reason is that I don't have as much time nowadays to play video games and this one doesn't take ages to beat. And I can say it without the nostalgia goggles since I played it on my own for the first time in 2009, so it was ancient already.

Even if you don't like this game you gotta respect it and what it did for games as a whole considering this game basically invented 3D lock-on 3rd person combat, like this combat is the bedrock for any souls game from From Software.

I have no idea if anyone even still owns the IP rights to it anyway)
I think the muted colors in OOT's artstyle lent a lot to the 'realism' of the graphics. It really made it easy to imagine Hyrule was a whole world.
3DS remaster missed the mark by making it all bright and saturated
I disagree, what they made the original look is bland and murky, as if everything was made of regurgitated pea soup. I much prefer the remake's colour space, though I never played Zelda back in the day, so maybe it's the lack of nostalgia.
@@Razielchan666 Playing Ocarina, you don't imagine the anime-style 3DS graphics. Regardless of how you feel about it, the "remaster" isn't faithful to the original style.
@@17Haru17 I'd say it's a "hit or miss" situation. The places were the original was supposed to be bright and vibrant, the 3DS works better than the original. But in places that were supposed to be dark and oppressive, it doesn't really fit as well.
The most clear example is the final battle, where the original just straight up looks better than the remake due to the far superior atmosphere.
@@XanderVJ Idk why people assume the original OOT was trying and somehow failing to be "Bright and vibrant". Mario 64 was both of those things and it came out 2 years earlier from many of the same devs. The N64 had its limitations, but use of color was definitely not one of them

It is one of the most influential video games in history, but it aged pretty poorly. You can still have a good time playing it if you have nothing better to play but every 3D Zelda since is just straight up better. Twilight Princess is just basicaly a better remake of Ocarina of Time.

what emulator did you use to record?
i love this game so much that i funny enough have 5 copies of it (two gold n64 carts my preferred version, the GameCube one with the Masters quest, and two sealed Nintendo selects 3DS ones that i will never open and i cant even remember how i got them). It is a shame that we never got the full game as loads of content had to be cut to fit on an n64 32 MB cart as it was originally going to be on the N64 DD and that content was planned to come later but we all know how the DD went though much of the content was reused in later games such as Majoras Mask. But some of the content originally going to be there was that all the medallions were going to be spells and some did make it over to the full game and they are easy to figure out what spell went to which medallion (in the n64 the entrance of the shadow temple as the fire medallion in the pedestal.) now for a long time not all were known but i think a few years ago during i think the giga leak that information was know and they were crazy like one would make you become Navi which is insane for the time had it been done. Another thing was the mask were supposed to work like they did in majoras mask but luckily that got shipped over to the next game. Also there was supposed to be a sky/wind temple, a light temple, and an ice temple. Now these did make it to the final game in tiny amounts such as the Ice Cavern, the light temple mini dungeon, and the forest temple mini dungeon as that one was full of wind puzzles unlike the others which had rooms that actually fit to the temple. Too bad we will never know how big Ocarina of Time could have been but what we got is the closest thing to perfection

This game was so spectacular that even just watching someone playing it was amazing. Me and my best friend were 7 and he had a teenage brother and I would stay over at the weekend and we would sit for hours watching his brother play it, it was like watching a movie or being read an amazing story. I remember playing it myself at that age but it was a bit complex for me at 7. Amazing. 🛡

I really do love OoT, but it’s not the “masterpiece” everyone says it is. Most of that is either bandwagoning or big TH-camrs saying it’s the best Zelda game or putting it in an “SS” tier on a tier list, and because other people want to fit in, they declare it “best game ever”. It’s a good game, but not anywhere near “best game ever”

I played OoT and MM using the Patcher64+ Tool, and they were both great.
I'm replaying it now for like my 20th time.
Hearing "it's a quarter of a century old" just killed something deep in my soul 😭😭😭
The music for this game is even more incredible when you take into account the limitations Koji Kondo had when composing it. He had to construct the main melodies of many of the game's songs around the in-game Ocarina, which only has 5 notes, and composed some of the most legendary songs in video game history despite this limitation (Saria's Song, Song of Storms, Epona's song, etc.)
In addition, he had to use a relatively low-quality library of MIDI sound files to accommodate the storage capabilities of the N64 cartridge, and designed incredibly atmospheric dungeon soundtracks despite it.
I still enjoy this game. It is still my favorite with ToK and BoW bein' 2nd and 3rd
My brother played it recently for the first time, and he said its a top notch adventure on the level of the best ps2 adventure games with n64 graphics, in other words it was a gen ahead in term of gameplay
Yes it is and the commercial was epic at the time. I remember how bad I wanted the game back then eventually I got Christmas of 98 . The 90s was truly a good Era of life. #Missthe90s

If anyone wants to play Ocarina of Time nowadays, I highly recommend the Ship of Harkinian PC port. Run the game in 4K widescreen at whatever frame rate you want, free from the shackles of N64 hardware.
I always finished the shadow temple last, dunno why but I did, also my first playthrough i finished the forest temple after beating fire and water temple

Literally just finished playing a playthrough on N64. While older games are much more unforgiving than modern ones, I truly enjoyed it as much if not more than I did originally.
I bought a Switch afterwards and am playing BotW currently and it's definitely a major step up to the modern era. That being said, I truly believe OoT hasn't lost anything in all these years
I like to just play threw all the dungeons without actually beating the final boss, go do some side stuff, collect heart containers to make it look like I beat them, then I go face the bosses with the weapons I'm not technically supposed to have yet.
Honestly, even a lot of the control issues you had were probably more the result of not using an actual n64 stick. The specific build of the stick gave it a very specific sensitivity, so a lot of games that feel fine with the original hardware tend to get pretty touchy in emulators.
At 6:39 a part of me wishes you'd said "Link defeats the boss, rescues the princess, and gets to third base".
