One of my local round friends is a huge standstill guy and he just pieced apart the field this past weekend and won his first event- a 3 round A-Tier here in Arkansas.
Fate put this video on my feed.

Broke my right ankle last year so I started throwing stand stills off the tee. Has really changed my game for the better. can now throw just over 300 from a standstill with my avenger ss. Going to start incorporating a walk up this season

Standstill + lower weight discs = accuracy + distance. Thanks for posting. As a beginner I was intimidated by the run-up.

I think standstills are critical for most beginners to practice. You have to figure out your reach back, power pocket, wrist snap, and nose angle to throw well. Standstill lets you focus on those things. Adding a run up on top of everything will just create inconsistency for beginners. Once your upper body is fairly consistent, smooth, and powerful, then you bring in the run up for a little extra athletic speed and power behind the shot.

Exactly my thoughts. I think lots of people start using run-up way too early and they do that only beacuse they see pros doing it

I have the same tripod. It's been working great for me going on 8 years.
I think iceberg shot a video with Scott Stokely where they were throwing standstill shots. He had iceberg throwing with his elbow up higher, and ended up adding like 50 feet to his throw within a 10 - 15 minute session.

Completely agree on the value of standstill training. I didn’t get a net until recently, but last year I saw that my form was getting worse, and it seemed to be my runup. I went back to throwing from a standing position, and I threw better. Figuring out what the problem was also easier when I could focus on just a few issues rather than a half-dozen. I went back to standstill training a couple of times after that, and it always helped. I have a net now and do standstill training in my garage a couple of times a week.
In your video, the ideas you shared were very helpful, and my standstill training is getting better. Thanks for the great video!

Learning how to build up a lot of power with the twisting of my body on a standstill throw is where I learned how to throw a lot better. When I started focusing on the wind up instead of running up, I was getting way more distance. I’ve also developed a bit of a lag in my throat. At first, I was worried that this is going to affect me negatively. But I’ve noticed that since I’ve added that right before I throw, I’m getting a lot more accuracy while also getting a lot of power. I’ve been wondering why so many people always feel like they need to run run up. I think a lot of people just need to work on their basic throw in general. And then on a run up.

Physio here. If lateral epicondylitis is setting in, especially post throwing, it could be a sign of musc control issues (you could have great strength and contraction rate, but slower control isnt there). If you have any therobands, try doing bent elbow, super and pronation of the wrist with resistance and wrist flexion/extension. 4 seconds for the movement phase, 10 reps per. may help settle the pain before it gets worse. obviously this is just a basic idea, so chat to your GP or PT if you need more/ pain continues

Been playing for about a year and I can only throw backhand standstill. Fortunately I can throw about 350-400 consistently and for the most part accurately. Everyone I play with tells me I need to start learning the x step and I’ll be out driving everyone but at only a year in I’m not sure if distance is even that important to me above accuracy. 🤷🏽‍♂️

3 months into starting from scratch with josh from overthrow, things definitely were rough at the start but now things are starting to click and went from 220-240' to 300 with a lot less effort. Its not consistent yet and have throws less or more then that but the 3months of struggle will be worth the years of growth and progression I'll have!

First, awesome tip Robbie, thank you for the video. And seconded on the tripods. I've broken 3 of those cheap phone tripods when filming rounds. Once I moved to a traditional tripod I found not only is it easier to set it down without it moving around but there's also less editing work in rotating the footage to be level with the horizon because you can set your level in camera especially on hills and roots on these New England wooded courses.

Hey Robbie. One thing I have always struggled with when it comes to the stand still is getting the power to translate to a full throw or even one with a couple of steps. I find myself having more power and snap on my standstill backhands. It seems to me like my back leg rotates well on a stand still so that my knee is inside my shoulder and it can be used to plant and extend for explosiveness but when I try to translate that into a one step or a run up it seems my back leg losses power and doesn’t so much contribute to the throw. I would love to see a video talking about footwork and drills to help incorporate the lower body!

Try backswinging the disc to your back hip, like holstering a sword, and internally rotate your shoulder to then throw the disc like you're drawing the sword fast

  • @NickCarroll

What you were talking about in the 5 minute mark with Paul McBeth is that he doesn't throw from the "deep" power pocket. His elbow is farther back in his swing, and the disc is closer to his left pec than his right pec.
I also like to do standstill throws on the course because it's much less complicated, and less prone to a misstep caused by bumpy/muddy/slippery terrain. Any distance lost is made up for (in my opinion) by increased accuracy.
I think what you're doing in this video is still pointing the elbow downward, so the forearm starts pointing up during the backswing. This is similar to what Calvin Heimberg does, but he corrects during his swing some to put the disc on-plane. I believe the elbow has to be pointing outward, not down, and the extension should be pointing either straight back (6 o'clock) or out (7 o'clock). I think this is causing your low release, because you bring the disc up high, it swings down low, and releases low. 🙂

I love the standstill. It removes alot of the variables and I can get 90 percent of the runup distance with much greater accuracy. I play tight wooded courses where accuracy is paramount. Anything under about 270 is a standstill.

You have way more teaching and experience than me but I learned Low to high like you and I wanted to the throw with a flat release and the only thing I can say that worked for me is. Stand up tall and it just works. Slumping over the shot it makes it really hard to get a higher release point. I thought this was going to cause more Anhyzer shots but after looking at side views it was high and flat release for me. Try it out maybe it only works for me but food for thought.

I may be in the minority here but I find the walk up drastically helps my timing. When I have to do a stand still on the course, I still like to do a pseudo step with my forward foot for the sake of timing.
Stand still are definitely a weak spot in my game and I do no consider myself good by any means. According to UDisc, at my local courses I average somewhere between 140-180 (on their 300 scale) depending on the type of course. I generally consider 270-280 to be my max distance with to occasional recorded throw being over 300 (best is 317 with a super flippy 9 speed). I'm far from good 😂

I can throw farther and much smoother consistently at standstill than I would using run-up cause there comes so much more into play using run-up that ruin my form. Takes a lot of practice until I could benefit from run-up

How about a step standstill, start with the feet closer together and do the last step like you just x-stepped. Do the stretch as you step forward. It helps you find the weight shift moment.

Standstills can totally help your game, but for me they are less consistent for 80-100% type shots. But yes my escape will regularly go 400+ for a standstill. I have gone 470' with a standstill, but it's not consistent. 400ish is my consistent 90% standstill with my escape. Just focus on a high quality throw and the power will get me to 400'. But distance is a drug ... More is "always better" even through consistent expected performance is way better.

Switched to standstill about a month ago because of a foot injury, my accuracy and distance both improved immediately. @BlitzDG was a big help.
My main issue is my self-consciousness on the tee during league and tournament play, i feel like i look like a newb and then rush thru my mental checklist
