5:555:56 These hand signals are still legal. Car drivers *_may_* use them, if they wish, instead of electronic signals. Bicyclists are *_required_* to use them (though few do).
I learned hand signals when I got my bike: It was a rule then. In today's world, I've yet to see anyone on a bike use them! Ever. And these bikers get right in front of you or come up by the side of your car. Worse if you'd hit someone on a bike. What do they have? A death wish?
My dad got his driver's license in 1940. He was 25 at the time. Cars did not have automatic transmissions yet, and stop lights were virtually non-existent at the time. Driver's Ed consisted of my dad's buddy letting him drive around the block, and when he went to get a license the Clerk asked, "Can you drive a car?" My dad said, "Yes" and was issued a license. By the 1970's when I was taking Driver's Ed in high school, my dad had already taught me (from personal experience) all the things we were being told in Driver's Ed. Now as a Professional Driver on the job who has been trained in the Smith Defensive Driving System, it's just a rehash of everything my dad said, which was repeated in Driver's Ed and beyond. My dad passed away in 1976, and in all 36 years of driving he only had ONE accident that was his fault. He had cataracts by his late 50's, and hit a bicycle at night because he could not see him thru the glare of lights. The other four accidents he was in were all rear-end collisions while he sat at a stop light by drunk drivers. Three of them were men, and one was a woman who insisted that she hadn't really hit him and that it was all in his imagination. The woman was the hardest one to collect a damage settlement from.
Yeah, I thought it was from the 1930's - not the 1950's as the video title says. I loved the neat old "Stop" and "go" traffic signals. Cripes, we need to bring back the hand signs out the window! (attempt at using old 20th century American English there). 😄
@@johnjaco5544Yeah, but it’s different when it’s only a couple people using hand signals. When _everyone_ is well…there’s a reason signal lights were invented.
When I was young 1st learning to drive I remember hearing some of the older folks famously asking "where did you get your licence, from a Cracker Jack's box?" Lol😂😂✌
I thought I was watching a bit from the 3 Stooges! Laughing at times as the driver that yelled the most had a lot to learn too. The bit of education tips was interesting too. Unfortunately they no longer teach Drivers Ed in high school these days. In today's traffic road rage can get you killed. Be safe out there, and remember to be aware of your surroundings.
At the time it likely would have been an insult. Far as anyone knows the word goes back to the 1880s, referring to men overconcerned with their appearance, may even have originated with Yankee Doodle Dandy. By the 1930s it probably mostly referred to Easterners vacationing out west at 'dude ranches', usually depicted as wearing outlandishly fake 'cowboy clothes'. Wasn't until the mid-60s that dude came to mean just 'some guy'.
Omg. I remember during my driver's test in 1974, being required to know the out of the window hand signals to turn right or left. 😂 I haven't even thought of that in yrs! Btw, in today's world, road rage can lead to you being killed, or someone else in your vehicle being killed. It's just not grumpy men raging anymore. 😢
That was a crack-up!! He's singing all happy, until someone cuts him off or whatever! 😂 Boy, the good 'ol days when the judge was like your friend, eh? 🤣 I guess this was before taillights and turn signals. Great fun, David! 😅❤️
my father, an avionics tech was stationed at bitburg afb in the late 70s, early 80s and one of his best friends was a pilot that appeared in a David Hoffman film during that time
I found this film clip both amusing and educational another great description writes up David. cars from the first half of the 20th century were well built especially if the body was made by fisher.
Also used in *_Pulp Fiction_* (1994): "Vincent calls Butch "Palooka", which is a reference to the 1920's boxing comic strip about a heavyweight boxer."
Could it be that white lighting had anything to do with it. Some ran their cars on it, and also drank it. Not that I know anything about that in North Carolina.
I wrote something on here about road rag and I decided to come back on to see the video again and my message was erased. So it the road rag it's really the same as today, it maybe different today someone might pull out a gun on you.
Great point of reference to the older folks that love to disparage the younger generation drivers that road rage are thing of today's world. This proves there's more cameras today.
Well, didn't change much back them, still the same in 2024! the only difference that i forgot is that now people pull guns, and melee weapons against you
It’s cracking me up how he vacillates from cheery singing to dishing out road rage monologues 😂😂😂😂😂
They will change the sign from ‘just married’ to ‘just buried’ made me laugh out loud a little bit. 😊 Thanks David, as always.
This reminds me of drivers ed in high school. Even though I got my license in the late 80s, the school still showed old 50's instructional videos.
I watched them in the 70's. "Johnny Gets The Keys".😂
Reefer Madness!
Yeah. "Blood in the streets".

I used them on my motorcycle for a while when my turn signals weren't working.

Say are you shortsighted between the ears or something?! lol
My first truck came with one tail light and no turn signals, factory issue.Road rage was a simple fist fight.
No seatbelts. No airbags. Bias ply tires. Ahhh, the good ol' days.
Suicide doors.
Hardly any traffic.
Dont forget manual adjusting drum brakes front and back lol
The film is titled "The Other Fellow" (1937) and stars slow-burn comedian Edgar Kennedy in multiple roles.
Yeah, I thought it was from the 1930's - not the 1950's as the video title says. I loved the neat old "Stop" and "go" traffic signals. Cripes, we need to bring back the hand signs out the window! (attempt at using old 20th century American English there). 😄
Can you imagine rush hour traffic with everyone using hand signals?
It'd definitely be pure gridlock! 😂✌
Well back in my country that how they do it just hand signals and traffic as worse as NYC .
I also ride a motorcycle,I use hand signals.Not that big a deal.
@@johnjaco5544Yeah, but it’s different when it’s only a couple people using hand signals. When _everyone_ is well…there’s a reason signal lights were invented.
This is late 30s/early 40s I'm pretty sure. Didn't see a single post war car.
Beautiful automobiles. I love that era in car body design.
When I was young 1st learning to drive I remember hearing some of the older folks famously asking "where did you get your licence, from a Cracker Jack's box?" Lol😂😂✌

I could use myself a nice 1940's Ford 2-door business coupe right now.
Yes, right now!
Did anyone notice he said "Dude" in the 1950s?? Did not know dude was that old!
It’s actually from 1937, so even older.

Even older than that! Actually it was meant as "fool" in old Europe in the 15th century I think
🎶 I'm sit-on on top oooof thaaaa wuuurld 🎶

It definitely lead to some people being killed back then too, whether by causing a fatal accident or a shooting/stabbing.
That was a crack-up!! He's singing all happy, until someone cuts him off or whatever! 😂

😂 when people could road rage and not get attacked or worse
Chickenhead has a different connotation these days. 😂
Nice black coupe!
Tensions were as high as their pants!
There was a Disney cartoon with Goofy as the protagonist depicting the same issue.
my father, an avionics tech was stationed at bitburg afb in the late 70s, early 80s and one of his best friends was a pilot that appeared in a David Hoffman film during that time
Those cars didn't even have wing mirrors yet lol. Sure were good looking vehicles though.
I found this film clip both amusing and educational another great description writes up David. cars from the first half of the 20th century were well built especially if the body was made by fisher.
I fail to see the rage here, people are still polite by my standards.
Now I know why we have radios in our cars now…
We can’t sing good!
Oh! People give hand signals TODAY. A HALF A PEACE SIGN. 😅😂😂😂😂
"You palooka, you!"
"Chicken head!"
🤣
Gotta be really mad to say that stuff.
“Why I oughta…” 😂😂

I liked, "Are you short sighted between the ears!?" haha

Can see the folks at either "Mystery Science Theater 3000" or "Rifftrax" doing this short, as they've done to so many others like it before.
If you're not outraged while driving, you're not paying attention.
The kids laughed at him😂😂😂
The ole through the wind screen job when you hit up the back of someone 👍
Could have used a fifth chorus of ………, 🎼I’m sitting on top of the world just driving along and singing my song…… “ say you Pooluka 😆🤣
The guy doing all of the complaining is speeding, tailgating, and guilty of bad singing. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Could it be that white lighting had anything to do with it. Some ran their cars on it, and also drank it. Not that I know anything about that in North Carolina.
Chicken Driver's always get the right of way.

I believe it's not erased, I can still see your previous comment.
I was wrong. I can't see your comment. What I saw, was a comment of another user, and he shared a similar thought.
Brake check 😂 I’m sitting on top if the world 🎵 Dashcam 1940,s style
Enjoyable. Thanks David.
I like the part when he floored it and the speedometer barely moved.
Southern California sure looked beautiful in the 1950's. Sadly, people still drive obliviously and recklessly on Angeles Crest Highway.
Didn't they have turn signals?
no.

He is definetly not on top of the world 😂

30s, not 50s.
"The other fellow," I guess women didn't drive, LOL.
pretty humorous but i do t recall my father or mother ever screaming at anyone while driving in the fifties .
Well, didn't change much back them, still the same in 2024! the only difference that i forgot is that now people pull guns, and melee weapons against you
A wreck like that today would've smooshed the plastic and fiberglass in all 3 cars but the sturdy metal back then didn't budge
😊
FIRST😂
Second 😂
