It feels a lot more like a modern indie title that's very experimental and zany. It's just some developers having the time of their lives making a game, having a lot of fun. It's very whacky and all that but surprisingly it just plays really well too, the controls aren't crappy at all, they're great. I really love it. Reminds me of another lesser-known NES game based on monsters, Monster In My Pocket. It's a Konami game, for the NES, so you know it's high quality. It's a late release too, in 91, so it's taking advantage of the things devs had learned by then to push the limits of the console, plus memory mapper chips and stuff like that existed by then. But it's just a fun little game where you play as pocket-sized monsters in the real world, so like you're jumping around a bedroom and everything is massive in size, like in Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers, or like Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion on genesis (some of the levels in that game, anyway)
Thanks John! Picked up a copy of Dynowarz at my thrift shop today! It's a solid C, you nailed it. But knowing the issues with it before playing it, because of you, made it more enjoyable! Thanks for your time!
When you finally gonna do Natsume bro!? Nah I know you'll get to it eventually. I asked it on one video but didn't really care about it, but then had to keep requesting Natsume on every subsequent video and so now I seem like a mad man who's obsessed with Natsume lol. I just thought they're a developer who made some really top quality games almost at the level of a Konami or a Capcom but some people don't know too much about their games so I thought it'd be a good way for say younger folks to learn about these - sorry I hate this term but I must use it - _hidden_ _gems_ !!! I absolutely love these videos man. They're really good, for finding some of these lesser known games, even ones by big developers that have gone under the radar. I have every NES rom ever downloaded to various devices but trying to find good new games is difficult with so many to choose from. You have selection overload, or selection paralysis, whatever you wanna call it (wikipedia says it's called Overchoice, and it's a real thing that happens to humans, a strange psychological phenomenon). Too many options, so you end up not being able to choose any of them, and you just go and play mario again. Like when you're looking for something to watch on Netflix, too much choice. Narrowing it down by going by developer means you end up actually being able to choose something new to play
Yeah GeGeGe no Kitaro was a manga that ran from 1960-'69 then became an anime in '68. There were a few different anime series afterwards in 1971, '85, '96, '07, '08, and 2018.
Xevious is actually pretty good for a 1984 famicom release. The US didn't get it until 1988 so it probably seemed downright primitive by then. It still holds up as a solid vertical shooter and I frequently go back to it.
Yeah they had collaborated so much before that it made perfect sense for them to merge. I just find it so strange now, I can't get used to the fact there's no Namco anymore. Well there is, but it's not the same. It's like Activision-Blizzard. All the old classic game companies are gonna keep merging. We'll see a Nintendo-Square-Enix one day or something odd like that. Oh well

John I've been watching your videos for a little while now. I love how you involve your family that's really cool I may try my hand at this video thing my inspiration being your vids as well as Jason from metaljesus thanks for all hard work
Dragon Spirit is the most interesting game IMO because it was one of the few games where the outcome of the prologue determines the difficulty. Dying at the first boss or any time before that will enable the gold dragon, which is the most powerful dragon, but put the game on easy mode, cuts down on the number of levels, and gives the worst ending. Beating the boss allows you to play the game as intended with all levels playable and the best ending.
"Its a known bad game!" directly translates to: "I only get my opinions on retro games from AVGN episodes." Don't get me wrong, i loves James Rolfes videos. But you can always tell the people who don't bother forming their own opinions. They're the ones always complaining about LJN.

Excellent video dude! Ty for giving Monster Party an A! That is def one of my favorite Nintendo games of all time! Can’t go wrong with a kid beating down monsters with a baseball bat!
Dragon Spirit really gets tough, in fact although I reached the final boss several times I never managed to beat him. Those levels where the screen speeds up! It's sadism!
Hey, someone else who likes the Dick Tracy game! It's hard, but it has such a neat structure to it, and I can't think of anything else quite like it. I really like the wild environments, too; the colors and construction give a weird, dream-like vibe to the whole experience. Monster Party is also awesome; not sure how I first discovered it, but there wasn't anything quite like that, either. I agree with you on licenses, too; they were so afraid that players in the US wouldn't recognize something like Gegege no Kitarou, but nobody knew what a Mario or a Zelda was and it sold like gangbusters, so why not, if the game is good?
Jekyll and Hyde is one of my favorite NES games. I own both the NES and Famicom versions, I beat them both with Hyde. Haven't been able to get to the church as Jekyll yet. Once you learn how to play the game it's a fun game, just like Friday the 13th.
John I look forward to these every Saturday! Btw I loved Dynowarz as a kid, I’m not sure why lol I managed to beat it a few years ago via emulation, I wish I still had my copy.
Been waiting for this one! Awesome. I have so much nostalgia for many of these games... especially Monster Party, Dragon Spirit, and Chubby Cherub! I completely agree with you about M.U.S.C.L.E. too, the less said about that one the better lol.
Dick Tracy: If the AVGN says a game is bad, that will be the prevailing opinion from the Internet echo chamber. I think his videos are fun, but I wish more people would actually try some of these games with an open mind. Dragon Spirit - this game is great. The PC Engine version might be better, but I'm partial to the NES one that I played growing up. I definitely am enjoying your ranking videos, John! Keep up the good work!
Wonderful video once again, John! I LOVE Monster Party so I was thrilled to hear that you had a similar opinion of that game man. It's definitely one of those enigmatic games that doesn't have top-notch graphics or music but when it comes to originality, it knocks it out of the park! And while the visuals and sounds aren't in the Mega Man/Contra category, they get the job done perfectly. Bottom line...I love Monster Party! Dragon Spirit would definitely be my #2 Bandai game too. Great gameplay and fantastic music in that one. :)
I had the 3 pack Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet. Still love World Class Track Meet/Stadium Events to this day. My parents however, hated us playing it because of the Power Pad. I was born disabled so I had to use my hands. Still lost most of the time but it's fun.
These vids are always my favorite! And I haven’t played many of these titles. I agree with you on Dick Tracy! I remember loving that game when I was a kid.
This video in particular makes John look like the Anti-AVGN! Besides obviously Jakyll and Hyde he likes games that AVGN had been very harsh on by now 😂
To be fair, out of everyone I've ever watched play retro games, James might be the only one WORSE at games than John is. A solid chubk of both of their complaints stem from the fact that they're just really, really bad at most games.
When people talk about Dynowarz, They often don't speak about the terrible hit detection (falling through platforms). The knockback can be brutal too if you are near a pit.
Riggs even when I don't agree with your ratings I always agree with your logic. As a retro gamer around your age I really relate to your videos thanks for the hard work
Pebble beach was one of my first games for the Nes. That music still lives inside my head. D is deserved! Dick Tracy got a lot of flack from the Angry Video Game Nerd but I loved that game! B is a great rating.
I remember renting monster party from my local video store and I saw the box art and I fell in love. Strange game but I haven't played it since it came out, although I did pick it up at a retro store a couple years ago cuz I sold my other copy
By the way, it’s actually Bandai Namco. I and a few others tend to shorten it to Bamco so we remember the order. I distinctly remember some of the more recent copyright notices on retro stuff saying BNEI.

Oh my god muscle tag team I totally forgot about that game I had on my multicart and I loved It, there was this star flying around that gave you special power
After watching this video, I decided to collect all the PowerPad games (since I already had the PowerPad and deduced that there shouldn't be that many). I searched Stadium Events... My goal was quickly crushed when I performed a search on eBay. I searched for all listings in Canada (that's where I live) and there was only 1. For $25,000... I wondered why it was so much. After a bit of research, turns out that when Nintendo bought the PowerPad from Bandai, they replaced Stadium Events with World Class Track Meet and destroyed the existing copies of Stadium Events. But around 200 copies had already been sold. I'm surprised John didn't talk about this.

I love love love your ranking videos but I would love to see a code masters ranking video . I know there not considered to be great but there are some who have fond memories with the gold code master carts.
Chubby Cherub sure is a game. Diy Dug 2 is amazing! I played it first this year. I love this game. Jeckle and Hyde was my first "bad game" I have as so disappointed in it when I was a kid Dragon Spirit is one of my go-to boarding killers on the NES. Dynowarz- was the best cover art ever when I was a kid. The game was cool, but man did I love that cover Frankenstein is my second favorite Frankenstein game. Galaga - ok Gilligan's Island - I haven't played it in years, but my sister loved this game back in the rental days. I think it was the first game she ever beat, so she kept picking it when it was her turn. Legends of the Diamond was better than it gets credit for. Monster Party - seems like it was a misremembered fever dream, but it is real M.u.s.c.l.e. is full Rocketeer - makes me want to play Batman Shooting Range - I love all Zapper games. All of them. Xevious - great shooter, but sadly you do not play a dragon
Great video as always John! If you don’t want the issue where sprite flickering is resulting in the sprite disappearing altogether when you get hit you’ll need a capture card that can truly capture 60fps.
Didn't muscle have like a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon? cuz I kind of remember one as a kid which caused me to rent the game a couple of times on the weekend.
@@tomwaters5090 the original Kinnikuman anime never came to the states, though it's rubber eraser figure line was released stateside in the 80's as M.U.S.C.L.E., which is probably why the NES game was released here with minimal changes (aside from the title, translating Kinnikuman's name to Muscleman and replacing Brocken Jr. with Geronimo it was pretty much the same as the Famicom game). However it's sequel series, Kinnikuman Nisei, was released here as Ultimate Muscle in the early 2000's, airing on 4Kids' Fox Box, and also had two video games of it's own released on Gamecube and PS2.

Muscle is way more nostalgic because of the little soldiers they sold. The reason the game was made. I had a lot of Muscle figures. So I thought the game was a C
Monster Party is a really good one. I showed it to my middle kid on Halloween. She got creeped out lol
World Class Track Meet involving alcohol consumption... Now that's a story I wanna hear!
I really enjoy your channel I never commented before but I just wanted to add my 2 cents
I’m a big light gun fan. I’m looking forward to your zapper rankings.
This !
I love love love your ranking videos but I would love to see a code masters ranking video . I know there not considered to be great but there are some who have fond memories with the gold code master carts.
I agree with most of this list, but Galaga getting a C is a crime against humanity.
Always loved Dynowarz and Dig Dug 2.
Chubby Cherub sure is a game.
Diy Dug 2 is amazing! I played it first this year. I love this game.
Jeckle and Hyde was my first "bad game" I have as so disappointed in it when I was a kid
Dragon Spirit is one of my go-to boarding killers on the NES.
Dynowarz- was the best cover art ever when I was a kid. The game was cool, but man did I love that cover
Frankenstein is my second favorite Frankenstein game.
Galaga - ok
Gilligan's Island - I haven't played it in years, but my sister loved this game back in the rental days. I think it was the first game she ever beat, so she kept picking it when it was her turn.
Legends of the Diamond was better than it gets credit for.
Monster Party - seems like it was a misremembered fever dream, but it is real
M.u.s.c.l.e. is full
Rocketeer - makes me want to play Batman
Shooting Range - I love all Zapper games. All of them.
Xevious - great shooter, but sadly you do not play a dragon
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde needs to be an "S" just for, indirectly, launching the entire form of reviews online as we know them.
Specifically The...You know who xD
I think Simon's Quest deserves some credit for that too lol.
Great video as always John! If you don’t want the issue where sprite flickering is resulting in the sprite disappearing altogether when you get hit you’ll need a capture card that can truly capture 60fps.
MUSCLE is also based on an anime, the legendary wrestling superhero comedy Kinnikuman
@@FatMarioHeads I do remember something from the muscle universe as a kid but in 2000 I would have been 21.weird thing is I did a Google search for muscles after I left the comment here and nothing even comes up even with the periods after each one of the letters not even a picture of the toy line which I do remember. Did they ever put the anime over and put English voice over on it in the 80s?
The same studio that made Monster Party also made the Fire Pro Wrestling games as well as The Adventures of Gilligan's Island. :)
