I really enjoyed this game as a kid. Too bad John didn't mention one of the bigger aspects of this having a bunch of different tables, not just the standard pool table.
I think the best part of lunar pool is that the friction is adjustable, setting the friction to zero makes the balls bounce around endlessly, which was very satisfying to child me

John is quickly becoming one of my favorites YT personalities. He's extremely relaxing to watch after a hard day of work. Thank you for everything Mr. Riggs.
I agree that John’s videos are a charming nostalgia hit when things are tough. When you’ve got adult issues weighing on you, he will suddenly remind you of that weird game you rented from that old gas station back in the day and never remembered the title of.
Minor quibble: Lunar Pool isn't "just pool" aside from the mechanics. One of the fun things about it is the constantly changing table layouts that keep things less boring. Also Magmax is a super fun game. One of my favorite NES games.
That one perspective from the one Ultima game worked really well for dungeons and dragons warriors of the eternal sun on sega genesis, which is an amazing d&d game btw!
Zanac is an A; groundbreaking Compile title that laid the groundwork for masterpieces such as Guardian Legend and Gun-Nac, the Aleste series, Blazing Lazers and MUSHA. I played Ultima to death. I had heard about the games on computer but I didn't have a computer. I managed to get to Exodus but couldn't defeat him. The Ultima series was MASSIVE in Japan. Both Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy were started as attempts to see if an Ultima style game could even be done on the NES. And from that we have the entire JRPG genre. It all started with Ultima.
My first NES was a generic clone manufactured in Brazil, compatible with japanese cartridges, and one day my dad comes home with a new game - SNOOKER POOL. Yeah, I know, it doesn't make much sense, but as your video popped up I came to see if I could recognize it among the others. Turns out it was Lunar Pool all the time! I sucked at it because I was too young to think of a strategy, but it was fun nonetheless lol
Never heard of FCI - but I have played a few of these games as a kid. Lunar Pool was on this bootleg "31-in-1" cart I had, and I believe I rented Magmax. When I was a kid I didn't think about who made what games, I just played the ones I was lucky enough to get or rented whatever one had the best looking box art lol
Zanac was the prototype for what became the Aleste series (M.U.S.H.A., Space Mega Force, Power Strike 1 & 2 etc). It's one of the very best 8-bit shmups there is period. Probably the only thing on the NES (not Famicom, Rekka is nuts) that matches its intensity is its sequel, Gun-Nac. One of the few true standouts in the genre on the system, I'd definitely rank it well above all that middling stuff.
I bought MagMax back in the day mostly because I thought the cover art was cool. Pretty much made myself like it since it was a blind purchase. It's very nostalgic to me.
I love this series. In fact, its what got me into your content. But as a SNES guy, id love to see more videos like this but from the 16 bit era. Ill watch and give you a thumbs up no matter what though. Youre just quality, wholesome entertainment that triggers tons of nostalgia.
If you wanted to get into a game like Zannak, the sister game Gunnak is absolutely amazing, and feels like practice for when they made Blazing Lazers. I actually recommend trying Gunnak, Blazing Lazers, and Space Megaforce (Super Aleste) in that order to see how that branch of their shooters evolved along side their other varieties.
I remember Dr. Chaos had the coolest box art. It really made me curious about the game as a kid. Seicross was fun but it took me a cheat code to find out it was a high score based game.

One of the cool things about Lunar Pool is the different table designs that you can actually select without having to beat or unlock them, plus you can change the "gravity" which affects the ball physics according to how much or how little gravity you use. It's definitely not your average pool game.
John one of the reasons I watch videos like yours and the AVGN is because we are from the same age range and have similar experiences and taste. Even if we both live on different sides of the US
Been waiting for Phantom Fighter review. Big fan of the ancient Eastern mythology so right up my alley. Once you get the hang of controlling it, reach other towns, and learn new moves, the game improves greatly so don't judge it too harshly right away. An underappreciated favorite of mine.
Oh goodness, I remember Phantom Fighter. I thought I was just bad at the game, then again when I played this I was really young. Now looking at this, the hitboxes were really bad.
I played Dr Chaos again this weekend. I've beaten it several times over the years, and it holds up. The controls are a bit stiff and the hit boxes take some getting used to, but the structure of the game is cool, the atmosphere is awesome, and it definitely deserves a place as a formative survival horror game. It's just a bit cryptic for its own good to a new player who doesn't know where to get the warp zone detector. The game is really neat if you get past that hurdle.
D & D: Heroes of the Lance had one of the best ending music in all of NES (Metroid being another). For that reason, my nostalgia is through the roof for that game!!!
The way Zanac randomized the enemies made it a favorite of mine. I also like Lunar Pool. It is not a regular pool game. The tables would change making it more of a miniature golf/pool hybrid.
As a fan of the Ultima series, Exodus and QOTA are actually pretty good ports for the NES, very reminiscent of Dragon Warrior, and that's why I liked them. Warriors of Destiny on the other hand...Was very disappointing. It actually is one of the best story-wise of the series, but I think they tried to copy the game engine from Ultima 6 into the NES (Ultima 6 also was good on PC, but a crappy game engine!) and it just did not work out well. They should of kept it more like QOTA, and it would've done just fine.

My Dad rented Pool of Radiance when I was a kid believe it or not. I think 3 times total. He never finished it. From the screen shots, I remember the dungeon part but I can see why he didn’t continue with it 😂. Great list. Thank you
Had alot of fun with Phantom Fighter. Was a unique game for the time. Never owned it, but rented it enough from the local video store that I probably could have owned a few copies.
No, they're a US branch of Fuji Communications, a Japanese media company. FCI still exists, actually, though they don't publish video games anymore. I think their main thing these days is licensing Japanese TV dramas.
I was introduced to RPGs with Ultima 2 on the Atari ST. Such a hit or miss series. They also came out with an MMO in the late 90s that's apparently still active.
Sounds like _Legends of Future Past,_ which ended in 1999. The game also cost $6 an hour when it was exclusive to CompuServe's servers; accounting for inflation, it's even more expensive than season passes for games.
Yeah, MagMax and Seicross were both arcade games. Nichibutsu (the company that created Moon Cresta, Terra Cresta, and Crazy Climber) made both of them. I’m an Rpg fan, so I put Bard’s tale, Ultima 3 and 4 and Pool of Radiance a step higher each, but have to agree that Ultima 5 is a dumpster fire. A shame too, because the original computer versions are classics.
I LOVED Ultima Quest of the Avatar as a kid and somehow I got ahold of a complete boxed set of the sequel, Warriors of Destiny with the huge manual, map etc. I kinda like the perspective but the scrolling is rough and I didn't play it long. I'd like to really give it a try someday and see if there's anything interesting in it.

Played Magmax arcade at Pizza hut they had a arcade room
I’m an Rpg fan, so I put Bard’s tale, Ultima 3 and 4 and Pool of Radiance a step higher each, but have to agree that Ultima 5 is a dumpster fire. A shame too, because the original computer versions are classics.
I had The Bard’s Tale on my Apple II back in the 80’s, the NES game looks a lot like it
I LOVED Ultima Quest of the Avatar as a kid and somehow I got ahold of a complete boxed set of the sequel, Warriors of Destiny with the huge manual, map etc. I kinda like the perspective but the scrolling is rough and I didn't play it long. I'd like to really give it a try someday and see if there's anything interesting in it.
Was totally with ya til Zanac got a C. Oh well, good vid.
Love World Championship Wrestling. Such a great game and I’m glad to see you agree
World Championship Wrestling, that was the game you mentioned that made me remember playing as a kid 😆
Pretty good games shown I do know the WCW one. The sounds on the WCW game are amazing.
Class of 1994? Man I bet we would have been trading games back in middle school.
I had no idea that was a version of Dragon Strike on the Nintendo Entertainment System. I have that game for MS DOS and it was pretty entertaining way back in the day
did you actually play all nes games in 80s and 90s? seems like youve played them all. or did you play any of them recently?
@johnriggs great job on the ASL

Giant Baba did a running neck breaker. The weirdest substitution to me was Steamboat for bruiser Brody.
