I personally have taken many more deer with a 223 than any other caliber, and never had an issue! Every single deer (one was +200 lbs.) dropped to one body (heart / lung) shot and none took even one step afterwards, however, I have taken smaller deer with a 7mm mag and had one run over 200 yards. Small deer taken with 7mm mag was spooked three times before the shot so he had lots of adrenaline going. All of the other deer did not, they were calm when taken. Moral of the story is No Matter what caliber is used it is the hunter's responsibility to be a good hunter and take game before they are spooked and learn to shoot. Far to many irresponsible people take to the woods with a weapon, blood thirsty attitude, shoot at anything, and cause injury to game and other (hunters). Learn to hunt, learn to shoot, and be safe because life only happens once, (careful what you teach your kidos). Nice video.
Me too I've taken bear deer and Elk with a 223 and they don't go anywhere
Words of wisdom from a experienced hunter. I'm new to whitetail hunting. I am learning,practicing and seeing what round is best and accurate for me to shoot. I would never...will never shoot hastily before I am confident I can hit where I want to ethically take my game. Thanks for the great info. And happy hunting.

@@millermanhal Check your state's hunting laws. Many states don't allow hunting deer with .223 ammo.

223 is velocity dependent. It’s counter intuitive but up close (higher velocity) it dumps energy faster and penetrates less. At longer range (lower velocity) it doesn’t expand or tumble as violently and “zips through”
Barnes vortx 55gr all copper hollow points worked well for me last season out of my 700, all shoulder shots one deer dropping where it stood the others no running further than 60 yards full sprint before expiring. The inside material when field dressing showed a rapid expansion it was all jello like material coming out. These fast light bullets expand so fast and with the speed of the 223 its like a grenade going off inside the cavity. I will continue using my 223 for whitetail until it would prove me insufficient which from the results ive seen with modern ammunition may be a long long time.
The block not being strapped down had little to no affect on the bullet not passing through on the close shot compared to the long shot. It has to do with the ammunition used. Deer season XP is a ballistic tip designed for rapid expansion and devastation. Up close the velocity of the round is so fast it expands rapidly and tears apart and dumps all its energy shortly after impact. At 200 yards the velocity has slowed down enough that it doesn't explode right away and maintains weight causing the better penetration. Honestly it's kind of what you want. Better penetration at longer ranges and explosiveness up close. Shot placement is key. If it's under 50 yards probably best taking a neck shot. Over that put it right behind the shoulder.

The strap held the held the gel in place that's the reason for the pass through... The second shot it absorbed the energy.
Very nice test! I wish there were more tests at longer ranges with hunting type ammo. The strap used at 200 yards is a great idea. Incredible performance from that little bullet at 200 yards!!! From the testing it would appear that a very close shot that encounters hide and bone may or may not exit an average whitetail deer shot broadside while a longer shot of 200 yards would most likely perform very well. I guess with this loading it may be best if possible to take a neck shot (where it meets the head) at very close range and break the neck vs possibly having the bullet not penetrating completely though the animal with a broadside shot. How about another test at 50 yards? Maybe a test with some hide and bone?
Hornady's 55gr Spire Point SP does a great job on whitetails. They market it as an 'interlock' bullet design. It performs just like a 'bonded' bullet design.

Christmas hunt some 7-8 years ago. Had brought the 300 win mag up to test some hand loads at the in laws. Decided to go have hunting. Knew that the Rem 180gr Cor-Lokts were grouping well enough for the task. Ended up shooting a mature doe at 40-45 yards. Acted like the Hammer of Thor had hit her. Both front legs were a complete loss. Bullet never exited. To much speed and energy at impact. Sure the same round would have performed better on an elk at 200 yards, than it did for me, on Bambi that day.
Wow. I have a bunch of this stuff I bought at Walmart. Everybody craps on it online, but it looks pretty effective here.

The 200-yard bullet went all the way through because you had it strapped down and stabilized the closer bullet wasn't strapped down and all the energy went into the gel throwing it up and off the table... I guess it is interesting
200yd bullet penetrated deeper due to the lower impact velocity.
I agree. The 2nd shot didn't go through because the gel was not strapped.
@@mnyee1995 strapping the block down does almost if not nothing for penetration. If it was a much larger much slower moving projectile that carried the block with it perhaps, but its a very small fast moving projectile that pierces through faster than the block can move.
What you are seeing there as explained in the video is a slower moving bullet expanding less and retaining it's mass, resulting in deeper penetration.
Great video. I hesitated this year with that exact ammo ,now that I’ve seen your video things will be different next year. On the 30 yd shot it to should have been strapped down like the 200 yd shot. I believe that would make a difference.
One of the reasons Mr. Nosler developed the Partition bullet was that he had tried to shoot a moose at close range (25 yds?) with a traditional cup and core bullet of his day. The bullet basically disintegrated on the moose’s hide. He wanted something that would penetrate up close AND at longer range. I believe that you just kinda proved it. Your longer range bullet penetrated through the entire block after shedding velocity for 200 yds. It hit, experienced some destruction but flipped over and exited. Dead deer! But up close, with much higher velocity, the bullet expanded quickly and self destructed inside the block. No exit wound to bleed from and track but probably still a dead deer.
The short shot didn't penetrate all the way through because the gel block wasn't strapped down, which allowed the block to absorb more energy from the shot, which is why it jumped off of the top of the barrel.

Should have strapped the gel the second time as well. Results obscured. I shoot 76 grain bthp match grade at deer, 18" barreled ar. Its devastating
Bullet moving faster so mushroomed faster and more violently dropping more energy. Imagine a bus hitting a brick wall at 100 miles an hour. It would fly all to hell. If it hut the wall at 10 miles an hour it would push through with much less damage to the bus.
Just guessing, but I wonder if the bullet tumbled and didn’t expand at 200 yards?

Using a calculator, the energy is twice as high at 20 as at 200 yards. Interesting to see the difference

If you shoot it at 200 yrd don’t tie the block down .then you will capture the bullet. That is the difference between the two shoots.
I do a fair amount of prairie dog shooting in my area with my .223 Savage 110. In my state we are not allowed to hunt big game with anything smaller than a .24 caliber so a .223 is pretty much delegated to varmint shooting. To bad.

I always laugh to see unanchored gel blocks dancing around. All that dancing is wasted energy that could have gone into penetration. You did the 200 yard test restrained and should have done the short test with the same restraint.
At 200 you had it strapped down. At 20 you did not. You know energy is wasted moving the block at 20, right?

223 is as small as I would go. I bought some monolithic or all copper rounds for my wife to hunt with this year. She is a good shot so I'm not concerned with placement. The rifle having no recoil helps, even though she can and will shoot anything and better than my buddies 😂. She makes dudes look bad every hunting season with bow and rifle, I love it lol. Anyway, poke a hole where it doesn't belong in a living creature and it will die. 223 works but I like ammo that retains all of its weight and expands when supposed to and as big as possible for the round.
Anyone that would bring a .223 to a deer hunt would suck an egg.

It is illegal in many states and provinces because it is not efficient. Can't forget the 1000yrd idiots that think they can hit a deer at that distance. A 223 just does not have the energy.
