I am so sorry for your loss. I can feel the connection you had with peanut. I had a squirrel that I raised from a baby that I also set free once he was big enough. He also didn't really want to leave. For 3 years he came home nearly every night. He was free to come and go as he chose. Every evening he would come inside and he chose the top of my highest kitchen cabinet for his nest. He took every piece of fake ivy I had decorating my cabinets to his area and that is where he slept. I know that once in a while he didnt come in and I worried about him as if he was my child. A day later, there he was, ready to play. What the state agency did to you, peanut and your family is horrific! Taking something that is pure and good and making it evil and bad. Completely unnessary while there are so many other bad things happening that deserve attention. Again, so very sorry for your loss.
I had a pet squirrel when I was a kid. He had fallen out of the nest, and his mother failed to rescue him. I (and of course my family) raised him from a little naked, pink, squirmy little thing to full adulthood. He was an amazing little creature! He had the full run of the house...and the kitchen; a fact that he took full advantage of.

Mark, I am so sorry to read of the passing of your beloved Peanut 😥 I am a huge animal lover, and in my opinion "they" had no business confiscating your lil buddy and then deciding euthanization was the only solution because of their concerns of knock it off why does it do that 0 concerns of squirrels being carriers of rabies. Why didn't they just request a rabies test be performed by a veterinarian and the results would be proof enough? On that note, sending healing vibes and prayers your way from Montana 🙏
