I think it’s interesting that while the king was never infected, the radiance controlled him just as much as anyone else. As soon as the infection was a problem, he was consumed by trying to stop it, and eventually lost himself to it as well. Maybe he didn’t die to the infection, but he certainly died because of it.
I support the theory that the Radiance let the Void in, turning off the lighthouse and messing with the other defenses.

The worst part is... I don't think any of the Pale King's children -- or at the very least, Hollow and Hornet -- would be all that upset about what their father had done to keep the Radiance away. In fact, they'd probably completely understand that everything he had ever done was done to protect the people of Hallownest after the threat of the Radiance forced his hand, even if that meant sacrificing parts of himself to do so. He was forced to sacrifice millions of his own children to the Void, forced to have a child with Herrah (which he seems to process in a manner similar to sexual assault), and winds up unintentionally dooming his entire plan by forming a bond with Hollow. All he knew afterwards was guilt, for failing his kingdom, his beloved, and every child he ever had, hidden away in the Dream Realm with his own self-loathing for the rest of his life.
He killed hundreds of thousands of children even if they understood the reason they would never accept such a solution 😔
So I noticed that in a lot of hollow knight animation shading is used to show emotion as most of the bugs don’t have a mouth and/or wear masks and this animation uses it so well
I have very conflict feelings on the Pale king. Like he's done really bad things. But you can tell that he desperate.
I mean, that doesn't excuse the fact that he filled a bottomless pit with the empty shells of his children

Ok, but in Pale King’s defense; if he didn’t kill those thousands of vessels the kingdom would have countless beings birthed from god and void running around with the possibility of infection. Even one of these infected vessels could bring the kingdom to its knees- but thousands would destroy it with nothing in its wake. That isn’t to say the genocide of his own children was justified, but he was trying to save his kingdom out of sheer perseverance and got desperate.
holy fuck it just hit me that "no cost too great" could just be something the king would repeat to himself while going through terrible abuse and hurting lots of people around him just for his kingdom, not some selfish "the ends justify the means", but more of a "this justifies the pain" sort of thing
Everybody ask where is the king but never HOW is the king, for me is one of the most sad king like characters in game history, maybe there is someone sadder but come on, he lands powerless against other good, gets forced to cheat on his wife to save the kingdom with the creation of a new vessel, had to kill thousands of his own children due to their imperfections and still lived through everything and felt how his world ripped apart

I really love the expression you gave the Pale King at 0:50, I've seen a lot of people describe the Pale King as some sort of playboy that doesn't care about the White Lady's feelings but I always interpreted his deal with Herrah as something that he forced himself to go through for the sake of saving Hallownest and that he wasn't comfortable with it at all because of his love for the White Lady so this was really nice to see. So yeah, cool animation!

The Pale King is one of my favourite characters,I like to see the story and lore in his eyes and not in the Vessels/audience's eyes. Pale had everything torn away from him,his wife,his knights,his own life. All because of big moth Radiance-- Pale King is truly a character no other king could top. He's unique,in backstory,design and lore. He needs to be respected more.
So by the end he is either
A. Being controlled by void and hardly alive, forced to care for his children until his shell decays.
B. Crying his eyes out apologizing to his children for what he did, filled with shame.
They both make sense tbh
I love this depiction of the Pale king as a dude with feelings and responsibilities. Because even though he traumatized all of us with his BS SAW BLADES, he was still trying his best for the best possible future.
Also it was really hard not to laugh at the scene with him and Herrah after watch a shitpost of him saying "WHO PUT SPIDERS ON MY DIC-!"
I love it when people portray PK as regretting what he did (but thinking it nessecary). the lore tablet infront of the abyss has always made me think he did Not enjoy murdering his children. also how he accidentally got attached to THK. PK's one of my fav characters, his story is so fuckin brutal, and I really like how his desperation comes out here, and how he's portrayed as reluctant with the deal with Herrah (bc let's be honest, in canon him having a kid with her was really coming out on the short end of the political stick, so I can't imagine he would have been too happy with it even if he didn't need to cheat on his wife to do it), as well as how he's haunted by the abyss. The scene at the end with him crying void while his children cling to him was also fuckin outstanding; it's a very powerful image and it hits the feels hard. Love this!

When you have higher thought, you realize that The Pale King said "No cost too great...." To help himself get through all the stuff he had to do that he didn't want to.
Okay there are numerous animations out there about Hollow Knight, and I've seen at least one other animation with this song, but this is the only one really making me go, "Fuck that's messed up." While making me sympathetic towards the Pale King.

This shows the pale king in a way that is not often looked at and this is great
I consider pk as the most misunderstood character of all, his only offense is to grant the intellect and a world never seen before to those who did not know any better, giving way to a plague of an invincible being that can only die if it is forgotten, but not being possible this had to seal it, defying time and stop the ruin.
What he did was tremendously cruel, but they make the mistake of misinterpreting him: at the infanticide scene, pk was already reciting his speech to the hk, making it clear that the hk has risen, and there was no ruling out. to the rest of his brothers for showing emotions. But as pk spoke, the vessels falling, proving that pk did not directly murder his children. He might have saved some, but the hk would develop emotions, and if he set them free, they would die anyway and could get infected, and if one is enough to be a boss, what will the rest be like? If the knight survived, it is because he is a perfect vessel or else he would not escape the kingdom alive. certainly pk he regretted what happened, the abyss tablet confirms it, even the mask maker calls it "his great sealed shame".
His adventure was nothing more than a treaty for at least one civilization to deign to help him, while the rest showed no interest in doing so. The truth is if he was a good father, because the hk being a newborn did not know pk, but in the final battle against him he sees him as his father figure, making it clear that pk loved his son, but was forced to decide whether he condemns the child or condemns his kingdom, as well as others who reside in his ruins. He made the safest decision or else everyone will die.if he suffered his loss? It is not known but if not, he had not made a monument in his honor, in addition to having treasured his memory with the
The truth is that if he escaped, but not as a coward, the answer lies in the void heart: his description tells us that he "hid a void now released" showing that the real soul contained that darkness, that same emptiness was in the room of the throne, pk's corpse showed no signs of having died Due to the void, escape attempt and his last dialogues do not confirm a suicide, in fact by taking his fragment he encourages us to take out the void heart, with its ability to see the future and his determination to control the void, the answer to his disappearance and death was in our eyes all this time. Basically, he sacrificed his life to give us the ultimate weapon to end the infection. I personally think that pk has been the tragic hero of the story, only his actions make him look like a great idiot.
I actually really like the Pale King. He did what he felt what had to be done and I love his story, it's well built. This animation is amazing

E Mmm perhaps, though I think the Hollow Knight got infected because though he had a mind, what mind he had was very weak. I think it’s a matter of health and sanity. Kinda like Myla, who was sane for a long time but became to lose her mind to the same songs, the same tasks, every day, until eventually she kinda lost it and succumbed to the Radiance. Equally good theory though that the Higher Beings have a special resistance to it!

Here’s my opinion in defense of the Pale King concerning the Vessels. Since they were down in the Void, maybe he couldn’t go get them because of the Voids negative effect on him, cause if I remember correctly, the void is hostile to him since he is a light source, just not corrupting like the Radiance.
That and a single one in their child phase (ghost) can be near unstoppable given the right skills and because they’re higher beings they are naturally stronger then almost all let alone while adult that on the brink of death are a danger to most while actively suiciding mid battle

He did a lot of cruel things for the greater good. But in the end, he wasn't quite cruel enough.
We’re cruel enough, not enough in general to stop radiance
I never saw the pale kings actions as truly evil. He threw his kids in to the abyss but they weren't alive yet just small fetus's in the eggs. So he never really killed them. But the fact where they had to either fight to get to the top or fight or be pushed back down is bad they were not truly alive they only were moving because of the void. He never risked the lives of his people only his own flesh (his children) when he left to go live inside the dream world we can see he took his servants with him. I believe he did this as a way to wait out and make a new plan on to fight off the radiance since by her not infecting him meant their battle wouldn't be truly over yet.
But he made his security contain the palace way too close to the void and died
The eggs he killed weren't alive yet, but the vessels he abandoned and killed in the abyss WERE alive. As shown by the fact that the Hollow Knight had feelings, and the fact that the Lost Kin bows to the Little Ghost, and a bunch of things Little Ghost does like delivering flowers and not killing Nailsmith.
Vessels clearly do have emotions even if Pale King wanted to pretend they didn't to make himself feel better.
The beginning is the perfect example of the radiances deception.

Bois FiddleBarsh It’s a bit of an uncommon thing to see people delve deep into his character since he’s already dead, but I find his character so fascinating because a lot of it is up for interpretation, but still has to follow actual lore. People find him as a proud egotistic king who wouldn’t say “no” to losing (which I still kinda vibe with that idea too LOL) meanwhile I can see him being a man drove to insanity by his drive to stop the infection and save his kingdom and fix his wrongs of the past. After all, isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result? :)c

fun fact: at 1:16 as the pale king gets infected and see's visions, it starts with the white lady, makes sense, then it goes to thk, also makes sense, then goes to hornet, bit wierd because she is his bastard child, but good enough connection, then broken vessel, why?, this is possibly due to the radiance's hive mind, allow PK could see other infected bugs.
