    Those big rail guns are terrifying for a good hit and run ship. I found in my testing though that the small grid fixed assault guns are the best for dealing with heavy armor in a drawn out fight on a space used basis

    A funny and interesting weapon concept that could well serve as a flagship weapon on a creative server. Last year I dug this out from the workshop and installed it on my cruiser, but it was too much to handle. By the way, at the beginning of the video it was said that you can send a drawing of your work, where can I send the link? I'm wondering if my cruiser is worthy of at least something :D

    I re-engineered this design with both assault cannons and railguns for reloadability, and they can be used in survival if the wheel is kept small. There are also survival-ready workshop items, but the more detailed construction will have to be done manually without a projector.

    1. Single-Grid Rotary Railgun. A large ship that is as ring shaped as you can get with square voxels. Attach railguns to the edge of the ring. Slowly rotate the ship while firing. Too make aiming easier, a single rotor block attached to a cockpit and offset camera can be used. It's way easier to rotate a cockpit/camera than an entire bank of railguns!
    2. Plasma Cutter. A large row of railguns. Align the railguns with the movement of the target. Vastly increases the odds of at least one hit.
    3. Plasma Cutter Rows. Just a wall of railguns, that go off one row at a time. Best used with hit and run tactics versus stationary targets.
    4. Rear mounted Railguns. Railguns on a turret that can point both forwards and backwards works. It's easiest to hit a target that is either pursuing in a straight line or fleeing in a straight line.
    5. Piston Magazine. A single piston moves a stack of railguns up one voxel after each shot. Requires only a single piston per stack of railguns. Also, looks cool, since you can visibly see your 'ammo counter' in the form of how high the piston is offsetting your railguns.
    6. Drone Swarm. Similar to the detachable beam drones common in Gundam. Figure out how many railguns a single battery or power plant can support, then build a bunch of minimalist drones off of that design. You could even make them battery powered, such that they have to return and dock to a mothership to recharge. An advanced script - more advanced than the best missile scripts - would be needed to coordinate the attacks of multiple railgun drones effectively.
    7. Surgical Alpha Strike. Each railgun is on an independent drone/turret/ship. Use an advanced camera script to designate critical weakpoints in the enemy ship. All railguns simultaneously fire on each of the targeted points. If you want to get fancy, after recharging, each railgun targets the next weakpoint on the list.
    8. Targeting System. The greatest innovation for Railguns is how it is aimed. The ideal targeting system would let you target specific points on a ship (or even just the center of mass), display how close your aim is to that point, then automatically fire the railgun the millisecond you are perfectly on target. How your railguns are placed would be irrelevant - point towards the target, wiggle a bit, and the first charged railgun with a perfect shot will fire.
    9. Close Range Spotter + Long Range Sniper. Send in a fast disposable, armored drone with multiple turrets (but no ammo). Set each turret to prioritize something critical, like weapons, engines, or power plants. When the aim points of 3+ turrets intersect on a single point in space, calculate the point of intersection, and send those coordinates to a long range railgun sniper. It might also be necessary to calculate the speed of the railgun projectile, the target, and any rotation of the target.
    10. A "low tech" version of 7. Find a stationary and unaware target. Release 4+ railgun drones, which would each float only ~3 meters from their docking ports with the mother ship. Aim each railgun drone separately with a camera. Since each railgun is on a separate ship, there is no risk of recoil from one gun interferring with another gun. Once all guns are aimed, use an antanae to order all guns to fire simultaneously. Order all railguns to dock, recharge the railguns with the mothership, then either repeat the process with hit and run or charge in guns blazing with the docked railguns acting like turrets.

    Magazine railguns. Use a pistons to move the railgun blocks along a single axis. Only one sub-grid and one piston is needed.
    Alternatively a single grid with multiple railguns above each other can be used with a script to adjust aim("automatically pull down" after each round) - this could probably be used in multi-player.

      so about 10 shots. Could be nice. Would work nicely on some vertical ship with "chin" undeneath, where it would be housed.

    was toying around with and upgrade to this myself for a makeshift ion cannon frigate.
    also i could see a funny version rebuilt to serve as the broadside attack for a capital ship. sensors to autofire when target is right infront of the guns so you just drive by and all the railguns ripple fire basically through the same spot, aim that well and you might just despine a vessel.

  • @Soothsayer-bp8oz
    @Soothsayer-bp8oz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    For aiming, use an custom turret controller connected to a seperate camera (top mounted works well if you have it) on top of (or behind using a subgrid to see through the back of the blocks as shown on my channel) each railgun. When set up properly, it will only fire when theres a target to hit.
    Also, despite the reload time, this works much better if you just fire them all at once.

      If you're building a really big ship with a large amount of guns you can afford to have heavy armor only in some vital places or else it will be so sluggish you won't be able to fly on planets or dodge missiles.

    • @raider8724
      @raider8724 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    How do you make this better? Easy: scale down the pinwheel.
    Keep the sensor trigger mechanism. Shorten your 4 spokes. Each spoke should end in a cargo container (local magazine) and railgun. Feed that with an advanced rotor connected to a junction box or another cargo container. Then you duplicate that setup and place it behind that at an offset with the rear guns nested between to front ones. Lock the rotor that interconnects the 2 carousels at the appropriate angle (depends on how many layers you make, 45 deg for 2 layers, 30 deg for 3, 22.5 deg for 4, etc). Repeat this as desired, extending arms as required to accommodate the additional guns. Place adv rotors with sorters (set to push rail ammo only) fore and aft to build a hub. Redundant ammo feeds from each end. Both end cap rotors should be set to spin in the proper direction in case one gets broken.
    Much less clang, far more compact in the vertical, slightly longer, probably sacrifices some rate of fire, fewer subgrids, still plenty of lag to get banned from most servers, still absolutely devastating.

    While the particular version of the gatling railgun shown in the video is not practical especially in a survival sense, the concept has merit and is very effective.
    I found the long reload time of the railgun problematic as you would usually miss the shot anyway, to solve this I built a 12 barrel gatling railgun.
    It's small enough to fit on the inside of a ship and fires out of a 1x1 hole at a rate of about 1 shot per 5 seconds; it's 5x5 and needs a 7x7 area to rotate within.
    This greatly improves general accuracy and allows you to very quickly cripple an opposing ship with precision fire.
    When used in this way I find the railgun to be one of the best weapons in the game.
    Sure you will still likely miss the first and maybe the second shot, but anything after that is an almost guaranteed hit.
    Ironically by firing more railgun rounds you end up wasting less of them.

      If you built a ship big enough you could house the larger scale contraption and possibly some kind of ammo feed system. You could even build multiple ones and offset them along the length of the ship.

      I installed the railguns in a circle, on hinges, but connected them to containers for reloading. Instead of a series of shots, you can fire one simultaneous shot from all railguns. It’s quite funny to watch how they cut off a huge piece from an enemy ship with one shot :D I don’t know if it’s possible to use it in survival and whether it’s possible to do without hinges, but the idea is promising

    To be honest, replace the rotors that connect each railgun with hinges, might be better, armored conveyors to replace the armor blocks connecting it all to the center rotor, maybe put armor blocks around the armored conveyors too. it may make the circle slightly bigger but everything will be connected by conveyors so would be able to supply the railguns with more ammo, so that it might work in survival

    Magazine Railgun volley by railguns moved by piston would be nice addition, but I think it is best used as support weapon from up close, when the inner weakness of the enemy have been identified.
    I will stick with warheads, and I would love to see content around them as well as cargo containers filled with ammo for maximum Ka-Boom, artillery using cannons firing warheads away and guided missiles are my favourite. Because why removing one block at the straight line if you can remove 10

    • @OmegaWoodworm
      @OmegaWoodworm 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Put a sensor on each of the guns set to shoot when activated, and place a block for the sensor to detect as a firing pin. When the sensor field passes through the block it's associated gun will fire. If your weapons are not on a rotor and are instead static you can use timer blocks in sequence to fire them.
