- We drove from Europe to Nepal in one year but still failed at our dream.
For the last 12 months, we have been on the biggest Overlanding adventure of our lives, trying to drive our van from Europe to Japan, but in this video, we show you how this dream was destroyed and why we had to turn around after reaching Nepal.

We are Joe and Liisu, relatively new to TH-cam but really excited to be a part of this community. We had a similar experience, but divided over multiple Asia trips and we did end up in Japan.
When we were a couple without kids we drove to Nepal as well (2011-2012) and could not reach our destination of South-East Asia, because Bangladesh suddenly had different rules for cars and it was just a year to early for Birma. We tried to go via Tibet/China, but they also closed just before we wanted to go, even though we had booked the guided tour with a couple of other people and cars. In the end we drove back. We had the same hassle with Pakistan visa, and there were massive floods in the south, it was heartbreaking to see while navigating through it.
Later, in 2018 we went with kids, through Northern Asia. Baltic states, into Russia, most of the Central Asian countries, then into Mongolia, Russia again, and took the ferry from Vladivostok to Japan. It was a wonderful trip. But many things changed after that. The car ferry went out, then came Covid, now the war. Some people who wanted to do a similar trip after us, couldn't do it.
I guess you constantly have to be ready for plan B, even though plan B often doesn't exist yet.

@@WildVikingTravels sorry but you was in the wrong parts of India you have to go to Uttrakhand, Himachal, goa, Kerala, Kashmir, rameshwaram , odisa and city like nenital, Manali shows you real love of Indians, other TH-camrs like Josie etc know how to travel, I'm not blaming you but you have to do some research before going because I'm us citizen now and I saw some weird dangerous places in us also

Being an INDIAN Living in Europe, I can tell India is not a easy place, you must become pat of the flow, which is very draining and time consuming. Another thing always connect with local content creators if coming to India to avoid the situation you faced.

Extremely sorry for the issues faced in India. You could have moved this way : Punjab, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Kernataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, West Bengal, to Bhutan or Nepal from there. You could have gotten more privacy, better educated people and more beautiful places. Hopefully you haven't missed Kerala. All the best. ❤

The way people in india were watching you like a zoo animal is because you maybe parked your van in some village and the villagers started to panic (maybe out of curiosity) to see what is your purpose to visit their place. Completely normal and nothing new. About policeman stopping you, you have the number plate on your van which may look like an alien thing for every policeman around the country so no one has to be blamed here. Don’t keep bitter memories for India.
Completely normal would be the last thing to say. No it's not completely normal. It's just the bunch of backward people trying to annoy others as they always do, not realising how it could impact others. Even if you go in cities you can find them trying to play loud music on cell phones in public places or invading privacy by peeping into ur phone. If you're foreigner then they will take this to whole another level by unnecessarily trying to talk to you or click pictures. Some people will try to cover this habit of Indians to annoy other human beings, who donot look similar them be it in terms of skin color or dressing sense, by saying they are curious and blah blah but it's nothing like that. They are just plain backward people and nothing else. You really need to have thick skin and strong mental stability to ignore this and stay sane.
It sucks that one country thinks that they are superior than the others. Sorry that your dreams did not come true this time. But hope you guys continue with your adventures. It's been great watching your videos and reliving some of the places I have visited.
Visa rules are visa rules and this time they were too difficult to overcome. This reminded us how lucky we had been with our strong European passports so far and had managed to get visas (although rejected more than once). Most people need a lot more work and visa applications to travel the world... and the rejection rate is higher as well. So we learned our lesson and will figure something out. Thank you ❤️

Really sad to see your experience in India and Nepal. Going by Road is just not safe guys. Glad you made it out safely. Even well intentioned ppl might come across as suspicious and cops will always see you as a security threat. I know how you feel. It is what it is. Usually backpacking through the known route keeps you safe However the folks who constantly hound to make a quick Buck is very difficult to get away from you just need to blend in and ignore the noise.
You should never say failure . You had a wonderful experience and I have really enjoyed following your journey and I’m not a young backpacker I’m 61. I love Nepal it’s my favourite place in the world . Looking forward to what comes next …we’ll done guys

Thank you! We did not want to make a story about it initially but I think it has quite a lot of lessons and challenges and not all rosy as traveling is perceived to be.

It's not 'bureaucratic nonsense'. We live in a world nowadays where there is wariness of one country to another, in this case, Asia, and where the element of land travel must recognise this fact. You can't go hither and thither anymore; to do so would be very naive.
Thank you! Bureaucracy stopped our travels and we really tried everything. From our side it feels silly but they saw visiting Pakistan as a threat and we can't change that nor prove our good will now...

Yes, there are two or three better sides in this country
I have had the exact same experience in India the first two times when I travelled with a companion. The third time, I really wanted to visit Mcleod Ganj and Rishikesh by myself. I had been travelling in Nepal, Thailand and Malaysia as a solo backpacker despite being, in those days, an almost 50 yo woman. I kept meditating and chanting mantras, many people were extremely kind to me while very few were totally annoying. India has the power to drain your energy, either because bus drivers drive for too many hours hardly ever stopping for a toilet break or because some men get annoyed seeing women travelling by themselves. In any case, many young Indians from cities can't stand cultures nor religions. They are fed up with the old system and they want to be free to enjoy life just as we, Westerners do. The India we have experienced so far will no longer exist.

Hello mates. So sorry to see ur dreams of driving to Japan from Europe failed just because of the norms of China. I suggest you to skip China and take a cruise from Mumbai/Goa/Visakhapatnam/Chhenai/Kolkata to Malaysia or Singapore or even Thailand. It would be difficult and costly to take ur van along with u, yet u can continue with ur dreams. Hope everything goes well. Much love from Nepal 🙏🌹

Did you guys really fail though ? I don't see this as a failure at all... For me what you guys have done and experienced is bigger than a dream. I personally love travelling and your story is soooo huge and inspirational . There is no reason for you to feel bad at all. Chinese problem? Indians are the problem in this country and they are migrating in masses to convert this nation into India. The whole country despise Indians for their infamous cheap and lowly behaviour. I hate it when Indians like you come to Nepal and speak against the Chinese and make us look bad in their eyes. You could have worked around China passing through India to Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam (although, very possibly, visas might have been required for any of these countries). I'm not sure how you would have got to Japan without requiring a flight (and shipping for Freyja, if you were not selling it) from anywhere in mainland Asia.
Travelling across Asia in a free-wheeling way overland nowadays needs meticulous planning and attention to the rules and regulations of every country, especially where borders are involved.
India and Myanmar still have closed borders so not attainable. Last info from Vietnam was that no campervans were allowed in. So without shipping 2-3 times, this would not have been possible and financially not optimal for our budget.

Frankly, I'm bemused that there would be easy access to China for those, either as a couple or with others, travelling independently the vast width of the country. China doesn't take kindly to foreigners unless they are closely monitored. Even organised tourism requires at least one Chinese 'guide'.
Nevertheless, you got as far as you could go, and that was an accomplishment. I wish you well if you ever plan to travel elsewhere abroad. But, please, do your homework beforehand - the world is a tricky place nowadays, as you've no doubt learned. Robert, uk.
@@WildVikingTravelsI live in China (foreigner), and crossed that border back and forth in the past without any issues. The problem was not Turkey (many Chineses travel to Turkey often) but the combination of countries you crossed and the entry point you have chosen. That route is one of the ones that used to fed terrorists into China in the past so it is very well controlled, if you gave them the time you would have got that Visa, no doubt about it... but understandably 2 months waiting in Nepal breaks the trip apart.

you dont know how to deal with india. its an amazing country. ive been there many times. i was also in nepal, also a wonderfull country.

I understand it would be easier if we have a safe place (like a hotel) to rest and recharge. But without it it is sadly just unbearable.
@@WildVikingTravels This is what happens when people don't do proper research and then behave like cry babies! Do you have any idea about the population of india? Without doing proper research, you would park your vehicle near any village and expect privacy? You clearly don't know the image these villagers have for foreigners, most of them would mistake you for smugglers, drug abusers, traffickers, to say the least! Most of them would not have even seen any foreigners before near their town or village! Hence, for them you are just an exotic animal or alien for them! No body lives in a van, not even locals in such remote towns/villages. If you want serenity, India has countless places with hardly any crowd where you can plan such things. But, a wise person always does proper research then plans things instead of crying about their foolishness!
@@WildVikingTravels i had an ambassodor, an old indian car brand, when i was in india, but i didnt drive from my country, the netherlands, to india,i am not crazy. in the sixties hippies travellled by land with the magic bus. in nepal i took taxis or tuktuks.
it were the days of the hippietrail, which also included kathmandu. there is still a street in ktm called freakstreet. other places were amsterdam and bali.
India is the most crowded, unmanaged,narrowminded society country from my experienced.

God why are you being sad ?? Do you know Nepal is The land OF The Gods ..Buddha's ....After such indian trip meditating and then coming to nepal is Like 1000 times more to your spritual growth then going to china or japan .
What an incredible story, and one you'll cherish in your lifetimes over and over again. Given you felt so comfortable in countries that others shy from you could consider the Pan American Highway (tip of North America to southern tip of South America). I reside on Vancouver Island, Canada and have personally driven the Canadian portion (Yukon-> Southern BC). It would an incredible adventure in nature and scenery and culture (especially as you dip into Central/South America). All the Best. P.S. My husband and I adored our impromptu trip to Tallinn, Estonia- so rich with history xx

I personally recommend you to visit North-East India next time (8 states in total). Simple, hustle free and fascinating at the same time.

Why did you go to the slum areas of India, who guided you to go park your vehicle at some random spot? people here are not open minded and will stare you to death when you are with your girlfriend and that too in a motorhome shirtless, Laws here don't allow many things which are common in europe, you should have known these little things before coming to India, every country has some areas where you should never visit or could get a bad experience.
We haven't been to any Slums in India and yes we totally understand that Indian culture is invasive and not for us. And this is exactly why we sound our opinions in our videos.
