im from the maldives and this is a thought even i have. everyone else sees the beautiful resorts and nice beaches, but in reality the capitol city and everything else is a whole other story.
Ohh it is amazing to have a Maldivian on the channel as well!😁
Welcome!
Yea that is true, not many people travel the local islands, but I must say Maldivian culture is quite amazing.
We are currently on Omadhoo and have visited about 5 other island since we left the capital. Each of them has its own way and offers something new 😊
@@WildVikingTravels yea different islands have differences in local foods for the most part. hope you enjoy your stay!
Isn't that this way in every country in the world? Tourists usely don't visit and look for the "normal citizens" or "backyard" places. or
th-cam.com/video/d3WYoSJ8wHo/w-d-xo.html
@@ahasif_same I live in maldives too
I visited Male and Thulusdhoo islands 5 years ago and was shocked by the amount of plastic trash everywhere. On Thulusdhoo at first it seemed to be a bit better, but then I found a big area in the middle of the island covered by trees where there was huge amount of trash constantly burning and one guy was watching that the fire doesn't spread anywhere. If I remember correctly, all the tourists were charged 5$/day green tax to be used to deal with trash in Maldives, but I wasn't thinking that it meant burning it in the middle of the islands.. 🤨😐
That's so sad to learn that, tourism when it has not been well thought, is devastating for sooo many countries!
Maldives not safe for women and children ,avoid travelling mardives its very dangerous country
Maldives ❌ is a dirty place in reality, Freaking expensive, unfriendly locals and full of Islamic restrictions and Sharia law. Don't visit there.

Great video and invaluable info & insights. Thank you guys so much. Good luck with your adventures!
Amazing and informative video guys! Really enjoyed watching the full of it. We plan on going there in the near future as well you guys made it easier to understand than browsing through google! I have a question about your drone tho, was there any issues bringing this through security and did you have to apply for approval for each flight and which drone were you flying at the time?
Heihei.
No problems in the airport.
When it comes to the drone paperwork then the short answer is that by law you should, but in reality no.
We did the paperwork once which was a pain in the ass and once we talked to the local drone pilots then nobody actually did it.
@@WildVikingTravels you are amazing🙌 keep on doing what you do, and please. Visit hawaii if you havent!

Wow.
Thank you for the kind comment and we are glad to hear that you enjoyed the video 😊😁
@@WildVikingTravels Enjoyed it and eagerly waiting for the next one, please explore more of the Maldives and make more vids about it 🙏
First time watching, I like how you two are respecting the locals and not complaining or showing off breaking the rules like so many others. And great positive vibes. Props to you both and enjoy your next destination!
wow, great video, guys! Thanks so much for all your hard work--I really learned a lot!!
Respecting the traditions and cultural differences makes you a good tourist in my opinion most of us have experienced that individuals who feel their personal desires are above all good to see respectful people thanks for sharing
Hahahah tell that to the asylum seekers in europe
Tell that to Muslims living outside the Arab world.
Muslims in my country never respect the local laws or traditions. But do not worry I will never travel to your muslim shithole country.
@@AbiNomacreligion is not culture. Culture you can go to any country and respect and blend in. Any activity against ones religion cannot be engaged in period.
So funny you say that, considering Maldives people don't show the same kind of respect to non-Sunnis. Not even non-Muslims. NON-SUNNIS! Respect should work both ways.
Great video, really like your production style
The fact that public transit is efficient & affordable, no need for taxi or even tuktuk is surprising but pleasantly so
I think you are misreprsenting here! Bikini ban is enforced only on the loacalk residential islands. The 100s of resort islands are just that - resort islands and geared toards holidaymakers. You can wear bikinis and enjoy yourself as you would with any other holiday destination.
If you watch to video until the end then you will see us also showing a tourist beach.
But I don't think showcasing tourist islands is in any way a fair representation of a country.
It's pretty much not maldives, but just a gorgeous island 😅
Actually it’s very common in the South Pacific in general to have various body parts as taboo/kapoo …and have a modest dress code …in some places it’s illegal in others it’s just frowned upon.
Some even have rules about not swimming on Sunday …especially not within view of towns
On some islands it’s expected to wear tee shirts while swimming
…some islands women’s thighs and shoulders must be covered in town
on other islands beach toplessness is normal, but peeping and cameras are not accepted …
on others ‘undressing’ in view of town streets is unacceptable…
it’s all because many islands had various missionary contact and they all have their similar but separate cultural proclivities
As with everything there are some people who may get away with it or may think they get away with it
@@WildVikingTravels
The Maldives never declared itself a bikini showcase beach.
They clearly state their resort areas.
So no, there is no misrepresentation.
I’m in agreement with the comment the lead in is not quite the case… I like them expected no bikinis
In the West, bikini is pretty much the cultural norm. I think it's fair to say, for Maldives, the cultural norm is no bikini, but there are exceptions in tourist areas. He pretty well said this non-judgmentally and honestly. And also they were not staying in a resort, so a resort has nothing to do with their experience there anyway.
Good content, addictive to watch. Thank you for showing a different side of the Maldives, a place I'd like to visit someday.
Fantastic vlog well done, your balanced view is very well researched. You did us and our Maldivian family proud, thank you ❤
Very clever production & travelogue. I don’t know how this ended up in my feed but glad I got to see it. I really didn’t know much about this island nation. I love travel & learning new places. Also, your girlfriend/wife(?) is so naturally gorgeous - a definite plus!
Heyhey!😁
So glad to hear that you enjoyed the video!
Yea maldives has also been full of surprises for us and every day we learn something new.
And I will definately forward you compliment to Liisu 😉👍
When people mentioned Maldives, I immediately thought of the movie "The Blue Lagoon".
There should be the most beautiful beach in the world! But people can't wear bikinis in every beach, what a pity!
Thank you for always sharing great videos, looking forward to the next one! Happy travel! 👍🥰🙏
P.S. By the way, one small question, where is your van?
Heyhey.
So glad you enjoyed the video 😊.
Yea maldives have been great and we can't wait to share more of it's beauty in the coming videos!
We put our van on a cargo ship from Mumbai India and as long as it's in transit (about 1 month) we will be traveling with our backpacks 😁
@@WildVikingTravels Thanks a lot for letting me know, you are very nice!
What I want to know is where do you send the van? Your country, or the next country to visit?
I was diagnosed two weeks ago, and I haven't recovered yet. I take medicine every day, so my mind is not clear!
So I just went back and watched your last video again!
I didn't explain it clearly in the last video, because I took a lot of medicine and I was very tired at that time!
It is wise not to go to China, please never trust that country, we know a lot of things that westerners don't, and those things never be reported!
It is strange that they tell Pakistan that they are allies but treat tourists who have been to Pakistan as terrorists!
They tricked a lot of Western TH-camrs to go to Sichuan to shoot videos this year, and gave them money,
but they had to cooperate with them to make fake videos, the purpose is to promote the upcoming World University Games,
and to create the illusion that there is prosperity there!
But a few years ago, we heard that western tourists went to Sichuan and was sent to the hospital for no reason.
After returning home, they found that they had lost a kidney. This is just the tip of the iceberg.....!
I have been vacationing on the Maldives many times. There are islands where the locals live and there they don’t wear bikinis at the beach. But on the islands for tourists you have these beautiful beaches and women are allowed to wear bikinis. The Maldives are my favorite vacation islands. You feel like you are in heaven!
@@SN-bl6xm Thanks a lot for letting me know, you are very nice!👍

You 2 are a cool couple traveling arround in those beautiful places.
The only footage of the Maldives I’ve seen has been the high end resorts. This was refreshing and very insightful, nicely done!
1:20 Most accurate depiction of an india vacation.. Only those who want to maintain an "our travels and destinations are perfect" image at all cost would tell you something else. Every honest person I met on my travels said more or less drastically the same. "Thanks, never again"
Same here. Going to Mumbai was the first time I realized that not every country and culture is worth experiencing by yourself. Some are just too much.
was there in the 70's and early 80s and, never again.
I'm German and have been living in India for five years, with no intentions to ever return to Europe. Why would I? I live a much better, easier and more fullfilled life here! If you can't see beyond the chaos and trash, then it is better to stay home! 🙏🏼

I sailed to the Maldives in 2002 and spent a month cruising through the island atolls. Whilst the setting was beautiful, the paranoid beaucracy of the Maldivian officials was rude, unfriendly, disgusting and expensive. Even all the hotel resorts would chase us away because apparently our yacht was ruining the view of their guests.
Anyways, its an over rated destination and won't be going back there in my life time.
Wow!
That sounds like hell of an experience!
While here I have thought many times that I would have loved to see the country before 2009 when it officialy opened it borders to tourists (other than resorts) but now that I see your post I think it is good that I didn't see the country in such paranoid state.
At the moment it really seems like the population is changing fast. Woman are working and divorce rates are high (which is highly unusual for a 100% Islamic country).
But I have to say that the arrogance of the resort islands is still there. They don't want to see us anywhere near their island, yet the local island have a different vibe and people here seem quite welcoming and nice.
@@WildVikingTravelsnothing unusual...women are encouraged to work and be a nice and productive person and contribute to the society..also divorce is also not a tabboo...we have a complete prescribed guide as how to get divorce if either partner are not happy....

Unfortunately the reality is very brutal and heartbreaking. We've seen many tourist standing on the corals on the resorts, we even reported them to the management, but the hotel management didn't do anything...coral reefs directly support around 25% of all marine species, including various types of fish and is their home...If this 25 % of fish will be gone, bigger fish will be gone...
littering is a huge problem, plastic swimming in the ocean - and it doesn't matter how many stars your resort will have.
the working conditions for the hotel workers are terrible. 6-8 people in one room, strict rules.
Just in front of the Maldives you will find the Indian coast for example Malpe and Udupi, which are just as beautiful and less stressful.
Thank you for the recommendation
@@WildVikingTravels no problem dear, I know you didn't like India much, but believe me, you would have loved it more as it was 30 years ago. I was in Malpe 30 years ago in a very solitary hut on the beach between the ocean and a coconut grove. Epic 15 days.

Did you exchange some euros in the airport?
Yea, this is an option.
The rate in the airport wasn't too bad, but in town you can probably find even better rates.
And of course you can withdraw from the atms as well.
On the capital island most of the things can be paid for with card as well, but on smaller islands cash is king.

Stumbled on this via the algorithm. You are very respectful travellers. Good job!
The Wild Vikings’ are travellers, not tourists and it’s tourists who always say “Oh these people don’t live as I live”! They will enjoy learning about what the Maldives are all about. Tourists just want the nearest beach, the fewest clothes, a burger and a beer. Hence the comments here, particularly those condemning the chosen faith of the people. So small minded. Its good that they set aside a few islands for resorts.
Non-Muslim visitors need protection from the local population.
If resorts were not separated from the locals, nobody would go there.
Why do they need protection?

It`s still boring to see all the trash in the streets. Been there 3 times in different atolls but I don`t get it....why? Why on earth is it possible that they still throw all their shit in their own backyard?
Can a guy like Saeed please let us know?
I totally agree with you, it is not acceptable to throw trash on the ground in any shape or form, but it simply comes from the lack of education.
Luckily they are now teaching sustainability and nature protection to the kids in school, and hopefully they will bring this knowledge home to their parents and grandparents.
Sadly it just takes time for such changes to settle in the society.
I really appreciate what u try to say about maldives. I came from another island from the world but more or less the truth is always the same in each conuntry. 5 stars hotel doesnt belong to the locals

Heyhey.
Hahh Yea, maldives have been nice to us!
Due to our videos from Iran we could not drive the van back so we decided to put in on a cargo ship from Mumbai. And as long as it's in transit we'll be traveling with our backpacks 👍😁

We put our van into a shipping container in Mumbai (we showed it in the end of the last video 😊👍)
